Lost In Translation buddies Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola reunite for new project

Aux Features Film

It’s been 16 years since Lost In Translation, and now director Sofia Coppola and star Bill Murray are reuniting for a new film called On The Rocks—they also reunited a couple years ago for Bill Murray’s Netflix Christmas special, but it was a little disappointing so we won’t bring it up again. According to IndieWire, On The Rocks is about “a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through new York,” with Rashida Jones playing the young mother and Murray presumably playing the playboy father—a role that seems well-suited to his knack for playing swaggering old dudes who are past their prime.

The other big hook for On The Rocks, at least from a production standpoint, is that it’ll be a joint production between indie studio A24 and Apple—which is stepping into the world of film producing alongside its still-mysterious journey into video streaming. Unfortunately, with how mysterious this all is, we don’t know what Apple’s involvement actually means for On The Rocks, including whether or not it will get a theatrical release or if it’ll appear on Apple’s streaming service.

I’ll bet $1000 this stays safely in Coppola’s lane of vapid, privileged white people with no real connection to the world around them, treating everyone else like ciphers.

Hopefully they give him the damn Oscar this time. I cannot believe Sean Penn beat Bill Murray. Bill Murray was sublime and Sean Penn was overacting. Get it right next time Academy.

100%. The more I revisit Lost in Translation the more i contemplate just how under-appreciated Scarlett was in that movie too. It’s a really quiet but soulful performance. She plays it far more mature than any 17 year old has the right or wisdom to play it.

His Christmas special was great and will be appreciated in time. The Michael Bolton Valentine’s Day Special was great and perhaps people will stop turning their noses up at it in time.
