Providing a common bond between FX vampire comedies and the production of ’90s talking dolphin show Seaquest DSV—at last!—Variety reports today that Mark Hamill has filmed a guest starring role on the upcoming second season of What We Do In The Shadows. Series co-creator Jermaine Clement confirmed Hamill’s role on the series yesterday at a TCA panel, with the Star Wars/Batman/two episodes of Seaquest in 1995 actor noting that he’d been dying to tell people about his part on the series (Shadows, that is, not Seaquest) since he filmed it late last year.

There’s no word yet on what sort of part Hamill will be playing on the series, which might be the only show on TV giving The Good Place a run for its money in the amazing guest stars game. (You can see Taika Waititi talk to us about assembling the show’s amazingly packed “Vampire Council” from its first season right here.) With more than 300 roles to his name—including, to pick one entirely at random, college-professor-who-is-actually-an-alien-who-is-friends-with-the-cast-of-Seaquest Tobias LeConte—Hamill is a pretty perfect fit for the series; he’s never shied away from investing a part with a little over-the-top excess, whether he’s trying to kill the Batman, dusting his shoulders off in space, or just trying to recruit the crew of a submarine to help him fight an interstellar war against the vicious and deceptive KrayTaks. Given that aggressive silliness is one of Shadows’ most potent comedic weapons, it seems like a natural place for him to now pop up.

Clement also revealed one other bit of sadder casting news: Don’t expect to see Beanie Feldstein back as invisible vampire Jenna with this year’s slate of shows. Clement revealed that scheduling issues will keep the Booksmart performer—who appeared on four episodes of the show’s first season—from returning to the role. Feldstein also never appeared on Seaquest, in case you were wondering, presumably because she was only three years old when it went off the air in 1996.

I can’t wait for this show to come back.

He tweeted at Jared from Supernatural and all Supernatural fans would die for him to do anything with the show. Loved that Eric Kripe said what a lot of us thought and that the Brothers on Supernatural Sam and Dean are based on Like and Han.

I read everything you wrote, then I disregarded and wish to say. I think Jensen Ackles should also do at least a cameo on this show.

      • hootiehoo2-av says:

He would make a good Vampire for at least a good meal for a Vampire on the show and it would get a great laugh by some.

        • brontosaurian-av says:

No offense to Jared Pade…, but Ackles seems better with comedic stuff.

          • hootiehoo2-av says:

Oh for sure, Ackles has comedic chops. Jared Pade not so much. I think Ackles would love to ham it up as well.

Insofar as much as the dichotomy exists, JP’s character on Supernatural is perpetually the White Face/Straight Man. Since the show’s not a traditional comedy, a lot of people might miss that.I love Ackles just as much as the next guy, but he gets to eat the pies. JP has to roll the eyes. The latter is a very difficult job, and it only gets more difficult when you’re not doing a standup routine that advertises you *as* a White Face/Straight Man in blazing neon letters.

I don’t watch Supernatural, so Jared is forever lodged in my mind as the guy who tweeted a horrible take on Philip Seymour Hoffman’s drug overdose and I don’t think I can ever enjoy him in anything.

Very cool! I suspect Hamil will play some paranormal type of creature but regardless it should be great to watch. I’m going to guess some possible scenarios we might see, Laszlo and Hamil discussing Laszlo’s vulva topiary sculpture collection or maybe an ancient enemy of Nandor or an flame of Nadja?

  • lattethunder-av says:

“Take a bite” because it’s a vampire show, or because in that pic he looks like he stole Michelle Rodriguez’s teeth?

  • drzarnack-av says:

Surely he will be a Van Helsing- wannabe. He could really make that work.

  • grant8418-av says:

I hope they bring back Beanie Feldstein in a later season, but make her now a super powerful Vampire, completely at ease with her powers.

    • brontosaurian-av says:

She’ll end up actually being in all of this season, but she got stuck being invisible and was just watching the whole time.

      • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

Oh, hell yes. With her power, you could easily just retcon her in future seasons as being there all along. Or you could have Nadja talking to the air and be like, “oh, it’s just Jenna” and waving at nothing.

  • laurenceq-av says:

My personal hope – he’s playing a Van Helsing vampire hunter and distant uncle of Guillermo’s.

The lack of the Guyver saddens me.

  • capnjack2-av says:

On the recommendation of people on here yesterday I’ve been trying this show again and starting to warm up to it. I think my issue was that at first it felt like it was imitating the movie, but as the season goes on it becomes its own thing more and more. So thanks folks! Way to change my opinion when I’m wrong.

    • pearlnyx-av says:

To me, the first half of the movie was good, then it moved on to, meh. I completely love the series, though.

      • capnjack2-av says:

Huh, don’t personally see much of a difference in tone or plot between the two halves of the plot, but maybe I need to watch it again.

      • DeuceMcInaugh-av says:

I prefer the series too. I like that type of bantering, but 25 minutes feels like the sweet spot. 90 gets a bit suffocating.

    • macfarlane1313-av says:

As it goes on it becomes clear how the episodic approach works well for the concept. As much as I love the movie, I think the whole things works better on TV. I think the werewolf episode is still my favorite.

    • tmage-av says:

Yeah. I think the first episode is there to ease movie fans into the series but it pretty quickly establishes its own weird identity after that (even with the cameos from the original characters)

    • bluedogcollar-av says:

You weren’t wrong, you just weren’t right yet. It takes a while to really snap into focus and go from sort of amusing to really funny.

    • erikveland-av says:

I’ve given this a lot of thought, and while it is definitely close:Series > Movie

  • hell-iph-i-kno-av says:

But Jenna has the unique ability to be an invisible vampire, so maybe she will be around …?

  • macfarlane1313-av says:

Damn you Ryan Murphy for stealing Beanie Feldstein away from her vampiric family.

  • paulfields77-av says:

    Creepy paper!

  • disqusdrew-av says:

Stoked about Hamill but that does suck about Feldstein’s character not being around. The Jenna storyline was pretty good, especially the fact she (a random person) became a vampire while Guillermo didn’t and seethed with jealousy. I don’t need her around every episode but its still a bummer she won’t be there at all

    • yepilurk-av says:

There’s a neighbor…I think it would be fun to see him as the human neighbor.

    • thelionelhutz-av says:

I’m just assuming for season 2 they will simply point out that she is in the scene, just invisible. The bigger question is: Will Jeff return? I mean, sure he lost his head, but why would that stop Nadja?

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

Though it would be fun to see Mark Hamill play a supernatural creature—his voice alone, whew, what you could do with that?—I so hope he’s actually the leader of a local vampire hunter association/guild. I can’t wait to see that arc play out, and Hamill could have such fun with that sort of role.

  • cgo2370-av says:

Mark Hamill and Matt Berry? Can one TV screen possibly contain such glorious amounts of ham?

  • modusoperandi0-av says:

Do we ever find out what they do in the shadows? Is it macrame? I bet it’s macrame.

  • allyoureggs55-av says:

God… I really want to watch SeaQuest now. I loved that show.

  • dr-boots-list-av says:

He’ll be playing a nice man who works as a door to door promoter for the Blue Milk Council

  • stevie-jay-av says:

Mediocre actor joining mediocre tv show. Yeah, this sound about right.
