Martha Stewart tries Uber, hates it

Aux Features Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart has reportedly joined us in the 21st century, and it doesn’t sound like she likes what she sees. Yesterday, in a now-deleted Instagram post, Stewart shared the harrowing story of her first-ever Uber ride. Apparently, the rideshare experience from Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue to her home was not up to the media mogul’s standards, even though she “ordered the most expensive version.” Don’t worry, we promise this story gets relatable at some point.

“The first Uber did not show up. The second Uber came ten minutes later and parked halfway down 57th street where I could not see the license plate,” Stewart writes in her indignant social media post. “Then we were facing east when I had to go west and south. Took twenty minutes to face southwest, etc, etc… On top of it all the car was a mess inside and out!”

First-time rideshare users may be equally appalled at this level of service, but longtime riders know that using these apps is always a crapshoot. Stewart should count herself lucky she didn’t wind up with an overly talkative or aggressive driver on top of everything else. Still, despite her criticisms, Stewart maintains that she was publicly shaming Uber for its own good. “I want Uber to succeed!” she writes at the end of her post, seemingly unaware that the billion-dollar startup already has a near monopoly on the rideshare game.

As mentioned above, the Instagram post detailing Stewart’s trip from hell has since been deleted. So, either her publicist is savvy enough to know this rant is a textbook first-world problem or she got sick of commenters suggesting she try Lyft instead. Regardless, we’re happy to see Martha Stewart taking part in a storied tradition of the common man: Begrudgingly and repeatedly paying too much for a service you hate.

    It’s a bad thing.

I share a birthday with Martha Stewart, and moments like this further prove that she is my spirit animal.

She could at least have given some suggestions on handmade floral bouquets to hang from the rearview.

Once she recognized the driver from prison, it was all downhill from there.

This reminds me: As seen on this year’s CC Roast of Bruce Willis, we now actually live in a world where Martha Stewart is more MILFy than Cybill Shepherd.

Oh, no doubt. Martha’s actually on my “List of 3 Free Pass Hookups” I have with Ursa. She’s hot, and imagine the tricks she learned in the hoosegow!Rowr!

Thing is, she’s not entirely wrong.
I’ve stood there at the exact address and watched my Uber drive right past me at speed while I’m waving my arms at them. Then they call several minutes later saying they can’t find me.I prefer Lyft anyway.  They’ve got those LED things.

I’ve only ever used Uber once (ride home from company holiday party while drunk) and they paid for it. I’ve used Lyft a bunch of times and it’s always been perfectly fine. Worst I can say is that one time, I had a driver who was a little too talkative.

I’ve had them pull up, see I was going from the city to a suburb, and quickly say “I’ve got a problem with my car, can’t pick you up.”  Multiple times.

For what it’s worth… if you’re a new user of either Uber or Lyft, you have zero ratings, so Uber and Lyft has to weigh trade-offs about how to treat new users. I’m guessing a depressing amount of new users will be assholes who got booted off for bad ratings and are back for more.Personally, if I were working at Uber or Lyft, I’d want new customers with no ratings to have a very highly-rated, well-complimented driver so the new user has a good experience. But Uber/Lyft have probably done the calculus to determine the right level of onboarding for unknown users.

I was working at a Williams-Sonoma here in New York City about ten years ago when Stewart came in to sign her latest book for the un-washed masses. At one point, she was coming out of our public restroom, and looked at me with theatrical disgust and said, “That restroom is filthy.” I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from saying, “Is it as bad as the restroom in prison?”

    Uber sucks. Lyft is better.

If history is any guide, that means Lyft is minutes away from bankruptcy and Uber will be a Disney-sized company by the end of the century…

To be fair, it wasn’t as roomy as her usual mode of transport

I took an actual taxi cab just today.

    • elrond-hubbard-elven-scientologist-av says:

I regularly take a taxi from home to the airport. Always clean and on time. From the airport to home is a different story. Never had a dirty cab, but had some drivers who resented the fact that it was a short trip and tried to refuse.  Thankfully, the person running the cab stand told them to shut up and drive.

      • minimummaus-av says:

My trip today was relatively short (thanks to weird weather, the sidewalks have been very icy the past couple of days). I feel bad about it so I try to help make that up with the tip.

    I’m with her. Uber sucks

I don’t use Uber but Lyfts have always been a great experience when I’ve used them.  Every single one has been better than any taxi I’ve ever used.

I came here for the obligatory Lyft is better, and I’m disappointed to hear that MS didn’t do her research first. She should have known better.
