More details on the launch Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe emerge in the new trailer for Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania. Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) enjoyment of his newfound fame as an Avenger is swiftly cut short when he and his family are sucked into the quantum realm, thanks to a contraption created by his daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton). There, they come face-to-face with the big bad Kang The Conqueror (Johnathan Majors).

The new trailer does not focus on the mechanics of the multiverse Ant-Man enters and all the dangers he will face but instead delves into his motivation for his short-lived alliance with Kang The Conqueror: making up for lost time. His work as an Avenger means he’s missed out on a lot of those crucial life moments; in particular, being alongside his daughter as she grows up in a flash. Kang offers Lang something many would want in a heartbeat—a second chance.

Despite the reservations of those around him, Lang enters the agreement with Kang. Like all deals with the devil, it becomes more than Lang bargains for, and finds himself at risk of losing everything. Kang’s immense powers include the ability to “rewrite existence” and “shatter timelines,” and in order to escape the quantum realm, Lang and his family find themselves at Kang and his budding dynasty’s mercy.

In addition to Rudd, Quantumania stars Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, and Newton. New additions to the franchise include David Dastmalchian as Veb, Katy O’Brian as Jentorra, William Jackson Harper as Quaz, and Bill Murray as Lord Krylar.

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters on February 17, 2023.

i was hoping this trailer would tonally be different than the first, but boy oh boy the marketing really makes this look dour. i don’t even really buy the ‘i lost so much time’ motivation. apparently it was peyton reed who wanted to make a more serious, important movie? feels wrong, man.i’ll obviously still see this garbage, though.

    • dr-boots-list-av says:

After Love and Thunder, Marvel decided that “fun” is out, and “dour consideration of mortality” is in. Might seem like a risky strategy, but so far it’s made them $831 million.

      • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

i think, based on the timing of the movies you’re referencing, they made those decisions concurrently!

      • bio-wd-av says:

Ironic that they picked the film about a woman dying of cancer and starts with a father losing his daughter to be the zany one, and the film about the guy who shrinks to ant size to be the existential one.

      • SquidEatinDough-av says:

Love & Thunder was dire and not fun at all, precisely because it was forcing the fun and didn’t take itself seriously

      Debbie Downer!

    • beadgirl-av says:

I haven’t seen enough to call it garbage, but yeah. This is not what I enjoy about the Ant-Man movies.

    • roselli-av says:

The “losing time” story element has been part of Scott’s story since the very beginning. He lost 5 years with his daughter from being in jail, he lost 5 more years being trapped in the quantum verse. It’s constantly the stakes of his story, it’s not the idea of jail, it’s losing more time from his daughter. The antagonists even specifically point that out.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Idk in the first film Ant-Man’s whole big thing was being a father to his daughter. Missing those 5 years of puberty during The Blip actually seems like decent motivation that any parent would experience. His kid isn’t just like his buddy yo…. it’s his child. She went from small kid to possibly not a virgin anymore within the blink of his eye. That’s important to people.

    • SquidEatinDough-av says:

      lolwhat it looks exciting af

  • viktor-withak-av says:

Wait what? Is David Dastmalchian playing a different character from the one he played in the first two movies?

    • dirtside-av says:

It sounds like it. He’s not in the trailer so maybe they just couldn’t find time for the old gang. Or maybe “Veb” is an alternate-universe version of his other character.

    • gumbercules1-av says:

Wikipedia cites a press release for the movie which lists him as playing Veb. So, if there’s a fault, for once it’s not with AV Club.

  • reformedagoutigerbil-av says:

Insects are gross. People like furry critters, like rodents. How about Ant Person teams up with Golden Agouti Gerbil Guy?

  • thomheil-av says:

I’m glad everything is so underlit. I wouldn’t want to see the special effects they spent so much money on.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

It’s Michelle Pfeiffer, you fools!  LIGHT HER PROPERLY!

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

That’s the point tho. Did you not see Pacific Rim? People gush over that films usage of rain to make the CGI seem better by obscuring it.

    • SquidEatinDough-av says:

You hipsters complained about “TV lighting” with Avengers. Now when you get cinematic lighting, you’re still mad.

  • dirtside-av says:

    YOU DARE NOT MENTION MODOK?!

  • deb03449a1-av says:

Majors appearance in Loki did not get me hyped for Kang. I hope this turns it around. If you want to get hyped for Kang, I recommend the 2021 Kang the Conqueror miniseries by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carrlos Magno.

    • pgthirteen-av says:

Loved the artwork in that series … but boy oh boy was it convoluted. But yes – the series is worth recommending, and it really gives Kang an epic arc.

      • deb03449a1-av says:

imo a Kang story should be convoluted, because of the timey wimey of it all. Kelly & Lanzing’s other output has not been as good. They’re on Captain America now, and it’s middling.

        • pgthirteen-av says:

I’m reading the Cap series now as well. “Middling” is a good description – I like their take on Cap, I LOVE the artwork … but gun to my head I could not explain or describe the storyline to you.

          • deb03449a1-av says:

Something confusing about a secret history to the shield? And Bucky has to betray Cap? But Cap isn’t mad?I’m not super familiar with Carmen Carnero, but it looks like I’ve seen them in the last Miles Morales series, some Captain Marvel, and an issue of Hellions. Agreed, the art is the highlight of the book, she’s doing great work.

          • pgthirteen-av says:

Yeah … after wielding it since the 1940s, Cap is JUST NOW looking into his shield’s origins, apparently. And there’s this secret cabal who has been orchestrating 20th century American history. Oh, and Bucky SHOOTS Cap … but Cap ain’t mad.I like reading both Cap titles right now (Sentinel and Symbol), but the Sentinel of Liberty storyline is REALLY some ridiculous “because comics” nonsense …

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

This trailer doesn’t include Dale (Gregg Turkington) so I can only give it four bags of popcorn.

  • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

Is MODOK being voiced by Patton Oswalt?

    • mid-boss-av says:

I’m not getting my hopes up for there being much more to MODOK than what we see in the trailer here.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

they’re saying on the internet it might be darren cross (corey stoll) from the first movie.

    • drpumernickelesq-av says:

I didn’t notice while watching the trailer, but on Twitter last night there was a screenshot floating around of MODOK without his face obscured, and it seems to confirm that the person playing him was the someone who was rumored to be playing him last summer. It’s not Patton. I’ll refrain from spoiling it here, but it’s a quick google away from seeing who it is.

  • stevenstrell-av says:

Where the heck is the humor?  Marvel knows people will see their films no matter what, but it’s a shame that humor is completely gone from this trailer.

  • mark-t-man-av says:

His work as an Avenger means he’s missed out on a lot of those crucial life moments; in particular, being alongside his daughter as she grows up in a flashWell that, and missing out on her early years because he was in prison.

  • pgthirteen-av says:

Interesting that Spider-Man is namechecked in the first teaser … isn’t this plotline somewhat lifted from No Way Home? Temptation to monkey with the timeline leads to catastrophic results? NONE of the Avengers have reached out to one another with a “DO NOT MESS WITH THE MULTIVERSE ANYMORE!” dictum?

  • legospaceman-av says:

I’m sad that this trailer seems to give the whole plot away.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Remember that Wakanda Forever trailer that showed the first shot of the new Black Panther in the film? This isn’t new for Marvel. Avoid trailer #2.

      • legospaceman-av says:

It varies cause the trailers for No Way Home didn’t reveal that Tobey and Andrew were it.Multiverse of Madness, I had no idea Elizabeth Olsen was the “big bad”.

  • sui_generis-av says:

Looks AMAZEBALLS. Minor nitpicks: 1) MODOK looks like crap. He looked way better in the cartoon or video games. If they keep that, then I hope this is just an alt-MODOK and not the only one. Perhaps, based on the casting (Dastmalchian, etc.), many characters we meet will be some alternate version of somebody else? 2) Wow, gave a LOT more of the plot away than the previous trailer, huh? 3) What could Kang possibly need from Scott, with all of time and the multiverse at his disposal? If it’s related to his powers, couldn’t he just steal the PymTech?

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I still think MCU second trailers show way too much of the film but in this case I didnt like the first trailer so this is refreshing. I’m interested now.

  • docprof-av says:

His work as an Avenger means he’s missed out on a lot of those crucial life moments; in particular, being alongside his daughter as she grows up in a flash.Um, I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that the lost time that he really wants to make up for is that whole five years when he was snapped out of existence. Seeing as that’s a huge part of this whole universe. Not just that daddy works too much and never gets to see his family.

  • vroom-socko-av says:

“(Paul Rudd) enjoyment of his newfound fame as an Avenger.”
Only positive I got from this. Paul Rudd is like the nicest guy and good for him for that sweet Disney cash. The last 4 MCU movies I watched (Eternals, Shang-Chi, DS2 and Thor : L&T) were mostly boring.

  • bostonbeliever-av says:

The thing is: it’s pretty hard to generate sympathy for a *superhero* who willingly endangers the, uh, multiverse because they missed some quality time with their family, or because their secret identity got leaked and it’s fucking with their personal life. Even if you’re like “yeah that sucks”, it’s still an incredibly selfish decision from someone whose defining trait is their selflessness. Then if it’s a well-told story, there are consequences for that selfishness e.g. Peter Parker loses MJ and all his friends. But we also generally don’t enjoy seeing our superheroes suffer lol. So kind of a lose-lose.Anyways, this looks pretty visually generic and also a stark departure from the tone and fight choreography style that set Ant-Man apart in the first place.

    • SquidEatinDough-av says:

      lol

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

exactly. i ‘get it’ on a pure narrative level but it does two things that i hate: it basically means that, even though these heroes saved the world they didn’t grow or learn to appreciate anything, and it once again invokes the thanos story we’re supposed to be moving away from.
