It’s been three long, pandemic-y years since Marvel Studios last took its once-regular place at Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con; three years that have seen the still-culturally-dominant studio operating in something like “easy mode.” That is, a few smaller movies mixed in with a few bigger-scale blockbusters, that big expansion into TV… but nothing like the massive rush that saw the franchise seize the attention of pretty much the entire planet with the grand conclusion to its Avengers movies several years back.

That might be about to change, though, with Marvel Honcho Man Kevin Feige confirming that this year’s Comic-Con will see the studio returning to Hall H, a.k.a. The Big Room, where the studio had previously announced all of its biggest casting and production coups. Feige confirmed the appearance while at this weekend’s premiere of Thor: Love And Thunderwhich also, as it happened, got announced at the last big Marvel Comic-Con, complete with a surprise appearance from star Natalie Portman. “We’ll be at Comic-Con next month, which we’re excited about,” Feige told the Thor crowd. “First time since we were on stage there three years ago talking about this movie and many others. And now, I think, almost, not everything, but almost everything we discussed three years ago, that was released, so we are excited to go and talk about the future.” (Someday, Mahershala Ali Blade movie. Someday.)

Marvel has been hinting at that “future” for years at this point, of course, filling out its universe in the intervening time with alternate universes, time travel, and winking cameos to its more multiversal ambitions. (Most notably in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which teased a reintegrated Marvel universe through a couple of minor appearances by major stars of as-yet untapped-by-Disney franchises.)

Which is a coy way of saying they’re going to announce Fantastic Four and X-Men at this thing, right? They’ve pretty much gotta announce Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Anyway: Comic-Con is scheduled for July 21 through July 24.

get Fantastic Four going but make it a maxi-series on Disney plus.  I don’t want another forced narrative to bring in Doom microwave style.  No. They can also start this FF in media res.  No 45 minute origin story again.  As far as X Men, take your time.  Give us solo films.  We saw a reboot with First Class.  We see how that ended up. Be careful.  No more wolverine.

These are all good idea. Ur right, we don’t need an F4 origin story this time.

A Fantastic Four intro in this style and length would be acceptable (launch lost in space time dilation return all in under 1 minute).

Bullshit! I need at least twenty highly compressed movie minutes of why and how they got the Fantasticar (brought to you by Dodge™), and I need it NOW.

No more wolverine.Solo movies meaning each X-Men team member gets their own movie? I’m a little confused by what you’re suggesting here but if that’s the suggestion…no thanks.

I’m a little confused by what you’re suggesting hereI’m guessing like a “phase 1″ series of solo movies culminating with a team-up picture. Good idea in principle, but so many of the X-Men characters whole arc was basically that they were depressed teenage outcasts until they joined the team, which probably wouldn’t be great fodder for a four-quadrant tentpole blockbuster.

I don’t think it’s a good idea even in principle – the X-Men are better as a team. Maybe they could do an episode or two introducing each character on D+ but anything more would not work well IMO.Personally I hope they take on smaller scale movies to start out with the X-Men that focus on the team being built and coming together. First Class was a good movie IMO and the issue with the franchise after was they abandoned a lot of what made that movie work to try to up the ante every movie. Maybe use Sinister, who I don’t believe has been in a movie yet, as an overarching threat.

We saw a reboot with First Class. We see how that ended up.You mean two well-received, vibrant films that reinvigorated a moribund franchise? Yeah, that would suck.

I wonder if the current XMen world of the comics (Started with Hickman’s work) would be the story. The storylines of this current Krakoa era have been fascinating. It could also explain where the XMen have been during all of this – they’ve been hiding away on Krakoa, similar to Wakanda.

X-Men solo films are a bad idea. They’re a team that started as a team book. There’s a reason why very few of them can carry a solo book. I love Cyclops but who wants Cyclops: The Movie?

I would like to know: the status of Holland’s Spidey going forward; if Cap 4 with Sam/Bucky will be a thing; info on Shang-Chi 2.

I’m going to temper my expectations a bit as Marvel has a lot of announced projects that they haven’t shown much of. Black Panther 2, as an example, is due out later this year and I don’t believe they’ve revealed anything about the story or villain. Would expect more stuff like that vs FF / X-Men announcements.

    • dutchmasterr-av says:

Agreed. There’s a lot of Phase 4 yet to unfold: She-Hulk, Ant-Man 3, Guardians 3, Marvels, Wakanda Forever are all teed up to be released in the next year. We might get Loki Season 2 or see Ryan Reynolds “interrupt” the proceedings with a Deadpool 3 announcement. Even before the pandemic, Marvel reserved its big news drops for the D23 Expo in the fall and I don’t see that changing.
