As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout gains speed throughout the country, we can now look forward to safely going to the movies. Marvel knows how excited we are for this. In a touching video that acknowledges how much we miss sitting in a theater with a bunch of strangers collectively losing our shit over seeing our favorite superheroes’ stories on screen, Marvel Studios shared the premiere dates for all Phase 4 releases.

We already knew the release dates for Black Widow, Thor: Love And Thunder, and Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, but we now know when other awaited titles are coming out. Here’s the full list of every release:

  • Black Widow’s release date was changed from May 7 to July 9, 2021 back in March. It’ll be shown in both theaters and Disney+.
  • Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings is coming out on September 23, 2021.
  • The Eternals, directed by recent Oscar winner Chloe Zhao, will premiere on November 5, 2021.
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres on December 17, 2021. It’s sooner than the date in the original teaser, which mentioned it’d be coming on Christmas.
  • Thor: Love And Thunder now premieres on May 6, 2022.
  • Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse Of Madness premieres on March 25, 2022. It was originally slated for November 6, 2020.
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is still keeping the previously announced date of July 8, 2022. We still don’t have word on how the story continues after the death of Chadwick Boseman, so it’s a big surprise that it’s slated to come out next year. It’s especially interesting, considering Marvel Studios had no plans of digitally having the late actor reprise the role.
  • The Marvels premieres on November 11, 2022.
  • Paul Rudd reprises his role as Ant-Man in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, which premieres February 17, 2023.
  • The James Gunn-directed Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3 premieres May 5, 2023.

Interesting they’re basically making Monica and Kamala co-leads with Carol for The Marvels.

    • brontosaurian-av says:

      …?

    • anthonystrand-av says:

Reading the title, it didn’t even register that it’s Captain Marvel 2.

    • killedmyhair-av says:

Oh wow, I was wondering what movie this was but that is EXCITING

    • peterjj4-av says:

I’m waiting for the inevitable thinkpieces about how the MCU won’t let a woman have her own film, but I can understand the decision. Much as I find the comics Carol to be a fascinating character, I don’t know how well the character translated into the films (not getting into all the Brie Larson hate as I can’t see that having an impact on Feige’s decisions), as so many compelling elements like the Rogue situation were not used. Having Monica and Kamala share focus with her is a good way to combine old and new, and weave a more cohesive web for the Marvel powers legacy than the comics tended to do (where Monica in particular was ill-served).

      • wrightstuff76-av says:

My first exposure to the name Captain Marvel came from Secret Wars. It’s always weird to see anybody other than Monica with that title, this helps redress that somewhat.

        • peterjj4-av says:

She’ll always be the only Captain Marvel to me. (I know she wasn’t the first – but she was the one I cared about)

          • apathymonger1-av says:

It’ll always be Genis-Vell for me. Still annoyed we didn’t get Phyla-Vell in GotG.

        • mark-t-man-av says:

Secret Wars was my first exposure to the larger Marvel Universe, too. I still think of Rhodey as Iron Man first and War Machine second.

          • wrightstuff76-av says:

I know Secret Wars isn’t considered high art, but I unconditionally love that series. I don’t care that all but ONE sentence throughout the whole twelve issues ends with a puncuation mark. It was fun and got me hooked on Marvel comics.

          • adullboy-av says:

That’s pretty good if they only missed the punctuation on one! But I assume you meant “exclamation mark” and the image above bears that out!

          • wrightstuff76-av says:

I was going to put exclamation mark, but when I was double checking I saw a few question marks and I doubted the fact I read.Either way Jim Shooter wrote the whole thing like everyone was shouting at each other (or just very surprised all the time).

        • philmoskone-av says:

And upgrading Monica now ensures a “NEXTWave” movie in wave 7, directed by a drunken Edgar Wright, circa 2029.

      • cjob3-av says:

Well, they can point to Black Widow now too.

      • mr-rubino-av says:

“(not getting into all the Brie Larson hate as I can’t see that having an impact on Feige’s decisions) “
Plus we’re kinda past that and any reviews and tHiNkPiEcEs that spend a paragraph foregrounding it are giving it oxygen it could never sustain on its own. Luckily nerd media love to do just that on literal everything they “don’t want to get into” so… good luck everyone.

    • TRT-X-av says:

It’s a sign they like how Monica has been received and feel comfortable they’ll be able to elevate Kamala to that level as well. Also, they’ve completely eliminated numbers from their sequels now (even for Strange 2 and BP 2) so “The Marvels” as a brand may be a way to distinguish this movie from anything they may do that ONLY has Captain Marvel. Also, as a brand, it helps them to elevate Monica and Kamala on merchandising. They aren’t just Captain Marvel’s sidekicks they’re their own heroes so it won’t seem out of place for them to have toys and cloths that only feature them.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I always side-eyed the ‘Iron Man’ films for just tacking a number on the end of the sequels. Have some fun with it guys!(Even outside of Marvel movies, I think every sequel should have a subtitle and not just a number. I want to feel like each movie is it’s own thing, not just an assembly line unit.)

  • tyenglishmn-av says:

Stan the Man makin’ me cry first thing in the morning? Hell yeah

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Stan Lee talking to us is emotional enough. Stan Lee talking about how we’re all family? Fuggedaboutit! I was damn near in tears.

  • laserface1242-av says:

I’m hoping for The Marvels that the antagonists are Mystique, Rogue, and Destiny since Mystique got her start as a Ms Marvel villain in Ms. Marvel #16.And Rogue absorbed Carol’s powers in Avengers Annual #10 in her first appearance. And Destiny is Mystique’s romantic partner who is psychic. In fact, before Chuck Austen ruined it by introducing Azazel, Claremont wanted Destiny to be Nightcrawler’s mother and Mystique his biological father

    • brontosaurian-av says:

I’m hoping it’s against Julia Louis Dreyfus, Olivia Coleman and Katherine Hahn. Because I just want those three to team up.

    • peterjj4-av says:

I know Glenn Close was already in GOTG but she would be a perfect Destiny.

    • reflecto-av says:

I think they’ll use Rogue eventually, but I am on the fence as to whether it’ll be with Carol. We’re still a long way off from the mutants clearly, so it’s too soon to know.

      • amaltheaelanor-av says:

I would argue that we’re a long way from X-Men, but not mutants. Kevin Feige has pointedly said we won’t see the former for a while…but the latter he’s been pretty coy. They could easily start showing up in other films and then gradually build toward a dedicated property in some future project. Both WandaVision and F&WS put down tracks that could easily be used for mutants. And personally, I’m hoping Storm shows up in Black Panther 2 in some capacity.

    • wrightstuff76-av says:

I hope MCU Mystique, if she happens, gets to have her white outfit. Bryan Singer’s decision to have Raven be naked when not in disguise was stupid. It’s not surprising both Rebecca Romjin and JLaw hated the make up process for that. It’s not like we would have been confused by her shapeshifting powers also changing her clothes.

    • amaltheaelanor-av says:

I want SO MUCH for this to happen. Not only would it give Rogue her proper backstory, her relationship with Mystique, and create the all-important ties between her and Carol, but it would just freakin’ rock to have so many women characters. All the characters we know of at this point are Carol, Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and an unnamed villain played by Zawe Ashton. It would be so awesome to add Rogue, Mystique, and Destiny on top of that.

    • disqusdrew-av says:

That’d be a pretty kickass way to launch the X-Men into the MCU.Also, I really enjoy all your comic books posts but I have to ask, how do constantly pull all the panels from every title, popular to obscure? It’s impressive. You’re like an automated bot for comics.

    • tvcr-av says:

I thought Claremont was good before, but that’s the greatest idea I’ve ever heard.

    • doubleudoubleudoubleudotpartycitydotpig-av says:

doesn’t Destiny also look sick as hell these days or is that a different Destiny?

    • jmg619-av says:

I hope they do Mystique’s look proper. I was never a fan of the ruffled feather morph or whatever that was. One thing I don’t get about her power is how she is able to change her clothes also. I can see her body changing because that’s biological but her clothes? Like if she morphed into a man but still wearing her white outfit. Ist that basically a comic book cop out? I assume that part of her power has never been brought up?

      • laserface1242-av says:

From what I can tell she’s always naked. She just has the ability to alter parts of her body to resemble clothes both in look and material. Also she can move her organs around her body to avoid serious injury.

        • jmg619-av says:

The moving her organs around is a cool trick to her powers. But I’m still flabbergasted as to how she can create parts of her body to look like clothes. But I digress…it’s comic books. lol

  • razzle-bazzle-av says:

Can they just cast Michael B. Jordan as whoever they want him to be?

    • apollomojave-av says:

Having him replace Boseman as the new Black Panther would be the best possible outcome. Just make his character be not-dead or bring in an alt-universe version or something. He’s a phenomenal actor and is super tight with Ryan Coogler so hopefully Marvel just backs up a dump-truck of money to his house.

      • dabard3-av says:

It would actually be a fairly simple resurrection. A Wakandan scientist who believed in Kilmonger’s ideals went behind T’Challa and Shuri’s back and resurrected him.

Or, during the chaos in Wakanda after Thanos’ Snap – both T’Challa AND Shuri were dusted, meaning the ruling family is destroyed – the scientist just does it.

        • TRT-X-av says:

A Wakandan scientist who believed in Kilmonger’s ideals
Uh, if Killmonger was brought back under those conditions…no.

          • dabard3-av says:

Why not? There is a plot point just aching to be explored.

T’Challa opens Wakanda to the world. Then he agrees to try to save an android built by two white men, even though the android is trying to sacrifice himself for the greater good and this other white man, who T’Challa is already doing a favor for by taking care of the White Wolf, wants the Wakandans to not let him make that sacrifice. This entails aliens landing, destroying half the city, killing God knows how many Wakandans and then they lose anyway because some other white man on Titan didn’t follow the fucking plan. Half the Wakandans, including the King and his Heir, are dead. Seems like more than a few Wakandans would be like, “Yeah, that opening up thing? Fuck you. Not happening again.”

          • TRT-X-av says:

Thanos happens with or without the events of the Black Panther film. Also, Kilmonger’s “ideals” weren’t anything noble.

          • dabard3-av says:

Didn’t say they were. But he wasn’t fighting alone either.

          • triohead-av says:

Think you’ve got that upside down. Killmonger’s whole M.O. was to open up while T’Challa preferred to keep Wakanda closed off. It was only after he considered the reception of Killmonger’s ideas that he came around (in a less militarisitc, more soft power way).

    • disqusdrew-av says:

I’m all for recasting the role of T’Challa because I’m not one of these people that’s super tied into one actor essentially being the character (this, or how some people are opposed to other actors playing Luke/Han/Leia in Star Wars), but I am ok with the next film not having T’Challa. Losing Boseman affected many people in many ways so I can respect it by giving people so more time. However, I don’t think Jordan would be a good replacement. Not that he isn’t talented, but that it’d just look weird considering he was Killmonger. And I know you could do some theoretical comic multiverse mumbo jumbo explanation, but I’d rather they just keep it simple. Find some promising young black actor out there. Cast him. Let it be the launching point for getting another black actor into more prominent roles.

    • bc222-av says:

After seeing this this morning, I actually thought “How bad would it *actually* be if they opened Black Panther 2 with Shuri going into a Wakandan cryo chamber or whatever and seeing Killmonger in there, still alive?” Would anyone really be upset or think it was too dumb to justify? In a comic book movie? Where they snapped half of life in and out of existence?
Or shit, clone him and put T’Challa’s soul in him or whatever. Just DO IT.(I didn’t mean to put the Nike slogan in a rant about Michael B. Jordan, but hey let’s go with it.)

  • kirivinokurjr-av says:

I heard Chloe Zhao cast non-professional actors with actual superpowers in The Eternals! Anyone made the joke yet?

    • anathanoffillions-av says:

some say the movie exploits mutants, but the movie is ABOUT mutants being exploited, so that makes it okay, right?

  • tipsfedora-av says:

looooool brie larsen has been downgraded to co-star of her own sequel

  • refinedbean-av says:

I definitely cried at this. Also hell YES to that last “catch it before its gone” frame of the Marvel Studios logo embedded into the Fantastic Four “4″.God just give me a light-hearted, well-acted and fucking FUN Fantastic Four movie. And a standalone Doom movie to set up his anti-hero character arc.

    • brickhardmeat-av says:

I actually teared up a bit too. Not to start a whole “thing” but I can’t imagine anything coming out of the DCU that would make me cry.

      • chuckrich81-av says:

A 9 hour Snyder Cut sequel in letterboxed 4:3 sepia tone. If you don’t cry it’d at least make your eyes water from strain.

      • mark-t-man-av says:

I can’t imagine anything coming out of the DCU that would make me cry.Only one thing comes close and it’s this scene from Shazam (spoiler alert).

        • brickhardmeat-av says:

Nice pull. I almost didn’t watch Shazam cause I thought I was going to hate it but was surprised to find it was probably my favorite DCU film.

      • cjob3-av says:

lol Imagine Zac Synder doing such voice over?
“We’re all part of the same universe. One where we can get raped in prison.”

      • homerbert1-av says:

Edit – someone beat me to it and i can’t find a delete button.I’m not a huge fan of the DC movies or crying at movies in general, but the scene in Shazam where Billy meets his Mom is brutal. I found it as emotionally affecting as anything in the Marvel movies (which I largely love).

      • ripley520-av says:

100 percent choked and sniffling. It was a damn amazing decade-long-ride to that hammergrab and line throwdown.

      • imodok-av says:

I think you’re largely right, but I still liked Kevin Costner and Diane Lane’s Jonathan and Martha, even when I hated what the script made them say. “You are my son!” Gets me every time. There are dynamics between certain characters, like Bruce and Alfred or Zod and Jor-el, that actually got poignant. And the scene where Charlie, the most war damaged member of Steve Trevor’s team, starts to sing, is quite emotional. But these are rare pockets of feeling in the DCEU. It’s mostly the tv stuff that’s tear inducing.

    • jhelterskelter-av says:

Doom should be introduced in Black Panther 2. What better villain for a monarch of an isolated country seen as undeveloped that’s hiding rich magical and technological resources than another monarch of an isolated country seen as undeveloped that’s hiding rich magical and technological resources? It would make so much sense for Von Doom to be inspired by Wakanda to establish Latveria as a fellow superpower, and I’m so much more interested in him as an established tyrant than going back to him as a lab partner of Reed getting an origin story a-fucking-gain. Dr. Doom isn’t interesting because he’s a dude in a mask that hates Reed Richards, he’s interesting because he’s a sorcerer/scientist/regent who’s a straight up SUPERvillain.

      • wrightstuff76-av says:

DOOM IS NO VILLAIN. HE IS A BENEVOLENT RULER, LOVED BY ALL HIS SUBJECTS.

      • Ruhemaru-av says:

Namor kinda has more of a tie to being a often villainous ruler who messed with Wakanda than Doom does for the most part.

        • jhelterskelter-av says:

Yes, but I’m way more into establishing Dr. Doom as an actual threat after decades of shitty screen depictions than I am about getting Namor in there.

    • reflecto-av says:

The Fantastic Four are the heart of Marvel in many ways for me, along with Spidey and Cap. Having them back in their rightful place means a lot.

    • lukin--av says:

Is it Fantastic Four’s 4, though? My initial thought was “Avengers 4″ (because it could be either “A” or “4″). Now I think it’s just a symbol of Phase 4.

Either way, I would be more happy with an “X”.

      • doctor-boo3-av says:

It’s definitely a 4 – Marvel have used the logo before when discussing their Fantastic 4 film. (When it was first flashing up I thought it was going to announce a new Avengers title – which would have been a hell of a way to do it)

      • nilus-av says:

While it is Phase 4 and it could be Avengers four.  The blue color seems a nod to Marvels first family.

      • soylent-gr33n-av says:

        Wasn’t Endgame technically Avengers 4?

        • lukin--av says:

It was more like Avengers 3 part 2. If I recall correctly Marvel even announced it as such (Infinity War – Part 2 or something like that).

    • ifsometimesmaybe-av says:

A little bit of procrastinating at work, and I had to hide my tears. The theatre-going experience is one of the things I miss the most, and I absolutely can’t wait to get back there. If Alberta gets their shit in gear over the next couple months, I think it maaaay happen in fall.

    • gseller1979-av says:

That 4 made me so happy. A Marvel universe without Ben Grimm just feels wrong.

I missed it so thanks for the heads up. Went back and definitely saw it this time… Fantastic!

      • smithsfamousfarm-av says:

Not gonna lie, I’ve watched this like 3-4 times now, and I -knew- the voice, I just couldn’t place it. The bastards. Got me too, but I’ve also been overly emotional for the last year since COVID hit. And I’m just a big dumb guy as well. Haven’t seen any family or friends outside of work in over a year and a half. I’m gonna go curl up and cry myself to sleep.

        • shandrakor-av says:

I’ve been dealing alright with COVID, it helps that I see my friends remotely once a week. I hope things turn around for you soon.I have a few very specific cry-triggers, and Stan the Man seems to be one of them these days. His cameo in Into the Spider-Verse was the last he recorded before his death, and it’s connected directly to the world mourning the death of Spider-Man, giving the costume to Miles, “It always fits…eventually.” Just guts me every time. I tried to explain it to my family and they thought I was doing a bit when I got choked up and couldn’t finish explaining the scene.

    • tvcr-av says:

Can’t believe this wasn’t mentioned in the article.

    • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

That was an “Avengers” “A”, not a 4.

      • refinedbean-av says:

        Check again. It’s definitely a 4.

      • nilus-av says:

I think it was meant to look like an Avengers A slightly bent but then it definitely became a 4

        • mikevago-av says:

Wikipedia, at least, has listed Fantastic Four as the final Phase Four movie for some time now.

          • donboy2-av says:

Wikipedia has no inside information.(Psych! It’s a tease for Metroid Prime 4. Let’s see which gets released first!)

It’s definitely a 4, and it’s in a very Fantastic shade of blue.

      • kikaleeka-av says:

It’s the same logo they used when they first officially announced the F4 film last December.

    • bc222-av says:

I kept trying to fight it, but i definitely got some chills from the imagery/music.
And I didn’t know if that 4 was for the Fantastic Four or if it was just meant to signify Phase 4, or both.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I look forward to the exciting new ways they change Doom’s power set and have him be anything other than a European dictator. Maybe this time he can be a kooky scientist studying something called the Latt Variance, and he can have gravity powers? Yeah, that’ll do it!

  • anthonystrand-av says:

The list in this article doesn’t have the Thor release date.

    • cmartin101444-av says:

The article lists it as February 11, 2022, but the video lists it as May 6, 2022. It would be odd if Marvel didn’t have anything on the schedule for May of 2022. It may have been previously announced as February, but now moved to May.

      • dirtside-av says:

Actually, the only new things are the release dates for Ant-Man and GOTG (both of which Marvel had announced as 2023, but they hadn’t given specific dates yet), and the fact that Captain Marvel 2 is titled “The Marvels”. All the other names and release dates were already known.

An oversight on the past clips, for sure. They need permission from Universal to use footage from Incredible Hulk, but not from any of the Avengers films or Ragnarok. For the future clips, though: They have no solo Hulk films planned (because that would require sharing profits with Universal), no Avenger-level crossovers announced*, & this video was only about movies (so the She-Hulk show wouldn’t be included anyway).*Though they almost certainly have either Young Avengers or New Avengers cooking, with the current character lineups as they are.

  • perlafas-av says:

That’s inspiring. It made me laugh out loud, the way it reminded us it’s still 98% about punching and killing dramatically.

    • mark-t-man-av says:

98% about punching and killing Yes, action movies often include action.

      • perlafas-av says:

Even when they pretend to be about how we are all brothers (wipes solitary tear).Reminds me of japanese cartoons that were entirely about multi-episodes punchathons intertwined with dialogues about violence never solving anything. Same “aw, so true, and now for the good stuff”. The cake and eating it.

        • mikevago-av says:

I don’t know why I have to explain that movies can be about more than one thing.

          • perlafas-av says:

But conveniently so. There’s a thrill to violence. There’s a whole ideology of might, strength, badassery, at the basis of all exhilarating action movie. The role-models of “don’t mess with the hero” (John Wayne, Bruce Willis, Steven Seagal, Daniel Craig, whatever), of self-affirmation through brutality and chestpounding, and the very relaxing incarnation of antagonism by a character or a device you can physically crush. Hey, just look at DaBard3’s characteristic answer.  Awesome, kickass. Biff, pow, a real man’s.And, in parallel, the moralistic virtues of humanism, pacifism, etc. Because, hey, we’re the well-behaved good guys. The brutes are the baddies, ain’t they ? So, the heroes and the narrator have to explain how sweet and humane they are and wish everything to be. But how boring. Hence : thank god there are baddies to punch, thank god there are enemies to oh so reluctantly explode. Thank god for righteous violence. How manly would we manage to feel, if it wasn’t imposed to us ?So yes, it can be two things. And it can hypocritically play on opposing values. Identification to brutal badassery, identification to humanist values, and intrusion of a convenient pretext for it, with the lie of the stories’ baddies being the ones finding brutality appealing (as a mode of expression and self-worth). It’s a commonplace recipe, the reluctant warrior trope, but it should maybe prevent the public (if the public was a tad more self-aware) from taking one half of these double discourses too seriously. When the two things get turned up to the ridiculous levels of comic book movies (the super moving discourses, and the superhuman punches as main body language), the contrast makes it crack a little bit. There are movies about humanism that don’t rely on the thrills of self-righteous wallops.
Thing is, self-identification to self-righteous pugilistic heroes is a motive for conservatives (and some progressives to) to seek and identify simple “enemies” to single out and vent against, when not worse. So, maybe, maybe, a little bit of distancing and self-irony could be welcome in front of action movies trying hard to have it both way with their messages of peace.

        • robgrizzly-av says:

Having their cake and eating it too is basically how Disney operates. They’ll preach about taking a stand for what’s right, but when something like voter suppression happens, instead of boycotting, they will continue to film in Georgia anyway. (They’ll pay lip service to saying it’s about the jobs, when really it’s about the sweet tax cuts.)

    • dabard3-av says:

I think you should give people in your life more credit. My guess is they have to restrain themselves from punching you a lot.

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

And the other 2%? Frank Stallone.

  • marshalgrover-av says:

    Two years until Ant-Man 3?!

  • pocrow-av says:

“Stan, we’re going to have to ask you to record several hundred hours of inspirational speeches, just to have in the can.”

    “You’ve got it, True Believer!”

    • jizbam-av says:

I get the feeling Stan just sat around spouting platitudes to anyone who would listen.

      • dr-memory-av says:

It’s kinda hilarious since according to basically everyone who ever worked with or for him, Lee (RIP) was one of the biggest and most consistent assholes ever to walk the earth.

        • pocrow-av says:

I know a good number of people who worked with him in the early 2000s, and they have nothing but nice things to say about him during that period.

        • alexpkavclub-av says:

I know a guy who worked with Stan for years; he says Stan was a solid gold, endlessly enthusiastic, funny guy who was absolutely SURROUNDED by vipers.

          • mikevago-av says:

Everything I’ve read about Stan Lee leads me to suspect that, as the public face of Marvel, he got a disproportionate share of the credit for the work the creative team did, and a disproportionate share of the blame for decisions made by the cold-hearted suits, and neither’s entirely fair. (Nor are accusations of him “stealing” credit — he was always talking up Kirby and Ditko to the high heavens, but if one guy’s name becomes synonymous with comics, people are going to assume that’s the guy that makes the comics.)

        • croig2-av says:

I mostly hear negative stuff about Stan from his Silver Age peers (Kirby and Ditko especially), who he was directly working with to make comics. Once he sort of removed himself from the day to day operations of Marvel and became more of a spokesperson for the company(ie around the late 70s), the criticisms sort of fell away.

          • dr-memory-av says:

Fair, but I kinda feel like “fucking over the two biggest talents of his era” counts pretty hard against “was sometimes a nice guy once he was rich and had outlived the people he’d fucked over”.

          • croig2-av says:

            Totally granted.

        • jizbam-av says:

He’d probably spout a platitude, smile, and hand you a bill for $75.

        • kikaleeka-av says:

I’m literally reading the new book about Lee right now, & the basic through-line is that he was extremely inconsistent.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

“Is he done yet?”“Hang on, let me check…” *opens door*“…the nobility of the human spirit, that little voice inside us that whispers ‘Excelsior!’ even in our darkest moments…”*closes door* “Nope, he’s still going. I think we’re going to have to shift that one o’clock meeting.”

  • tokenaussie-av says:

Fuck it:I’m done with the Marvel movies. Finito. Ended. Full stop.I got to Avengers Whatever – the last one – and it felt like a chore to get through it all. It’s not so much a movie series now as a cinematic ecosystem you must buy into.

    • dc882211-av says:

I mean, that’s sort of what comic books are as a general rule right? You can partake in elements if you want, but it rewards being fully invested.

    • dabard3-av says:

      We’ll somehow soldier on

    • sarcastro7-av says:

      OK.

    • wangphat-av says:

That Disney stock is in trouble now

I always wonder why people think strangers care when they announce to the world that they aren’t taking part in something any more- we don’t know you, our lives don’t change without you around, so why do we care?

        • flatwormhole-av says:

Right? I don’t give a shit if somebody likes something or not.

        • igotlickfootagain-av says:

It’d be like someone going to the National Ice Cream Convention, screaming in the main hall, “I don’t like Ice Cream!” and then leaving.

          • ifsometimesmaybe-av says:

Cough Whitlam is engaging in the age-old “I must tell all the people their thing is beneath me, then they shall see how deep my wisdom is!” Like, dude- a lot of us are aware of the superficiality nerdy family shit like the MCU, that’s not an incredibly deep thought- we do it anyways. There’s also a lot of people that don’t watch it, and they go on with their days not sounding off trite shit like Cough Whitlam did.

    • igotsuped-av says:

      Must you?

    • dr-memory-av says:

I think it’s best to think of it as an ongoing serialized TV series that’s released in the form of 3-6 insanely expensive 2.5-hour episodes per year, some of which are entirely flashback episodes for no obvious reason.I mean, totally legit if it’s not working for you as entertainment, but in terms of the actual amount of time you need to spend keeping up on it, it’s not much different from Game of Thrones.

      • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

I was going to say the same thing but in a worse way. I don’t see how it is remotely confusing to keep up. And it’s better have a universe as long as you do it as well as Marvel has.

      • tokenaussie-av says:

Yeah, and most serialised shows are shit. People definitely apply the 20% rule with that. People talk as if all serialised shows are Breaking Bad or The Wire, and not The Blacklist. It’s purely done for business, not creative, reasons.

    • systemmastert-av says:

      Cool have fun.

    • lhosc-av says:

      Ok Mr. Snyder.

      • tokenaussie-av says:

Never seen a DC movie. Unless you count the Nolan Batmans.I have a theory that the reason why so many neckbeard types get angry at Snyder is because Snyder is, pretty much, exactly how they themselves are, whereas Marvel directors are what the fans want to be (but know they aren’t).They see themselves in Zack Snyder, and hate the fact that he’s loathed, and wish they could beTaika Waititi instead. Or at least a pre-cancellation Joss Whedon – the nerd whom girls (appeared) to like (for a bit)!

    • tvcr-av says:

      Please watch the next one.

    • cjob3-av says:

That’s actually the thing though. You DON’T have to buy in. I think that’s the part that has you confused and upset.

    • a-better-devil-than-you-av says:

Okay…and…that’s what makes it awesome. And it’s not hard or necessary to keep up.

    • geralyn-av says:
    • razzle-bazzle-av says:

I’m not that far yet, but I might be getting there. There are 10 movies listed here and probably only 3 are intriguing to me. Although it looked like Awkwafina might be in one of the movies, so I’ll make it 4.

    • TRT-X-av says:

Marvel thanks you for the past decade of patronage.

      • tokenaussie-av says:

Meh. They got more money off kids buying funko pops than me – which is the entire point of the Marvel ecosystem, no?

    • nilus-av says:

I mean good for you. It ain’t you thing and that’s okay. Let the rest of us enjoy our stupid spandex super people

      • jodyjm13-av says:

I mean good for you. It ain’t you thing and that’s okay.Let the rest of us enjoy our stupid spandex super peopleThis, 100%. I’m fully aware that the MCU is the cinematic equivalent of a thrill ride (a metaphor I feel like some film-loving guy somewhere has used), audiovisual comfort food that only occasionally plumbs deeper dramatic or emotional matters. If that’s not for someone, fine. If someone thinks they’re superior cinephiles (or people) for disdaining the MCU, well, I’m glad they get to feel better about themselves over their cinematic discernment.

    • zukka924-av says:

One season of The Sopranos/Breaking Bad/Ozark/whatever prestige drama you like most is probably anywhere between 10-14 hours of total watching over the course of a year. Between 4 movies and like 4 shows all part of one overarching “story” being released throughout 2021, is probably aorund 25-30 hours of total watching. So you’re basically getting 3 seasons of good tv over the year from Marvel. And this is a bad thing?

      • tokenaussie-av says:

You’re making the bold assumption – wrong, but bold – that a bunch of comic book movies designed to appeal to the lowest-common denominator are as good as the Sopranos. And also the bold assumption that serialisation automatically makes a show or movie franchise good.

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

I watch them for free at home on someone else’s account, so it’s not that much of a chore.

    • robgrizzly-av says:

I felt that way too, but I just needed a break. If 2020 was good for anything, it was good for that. Recharged enough that I’ll continue to watch the films for now, even if admittedly, they seem less interesting than the previous Phases.
P.S. I like that last remark quite a bit.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Wait, just let me make a note of this. “Cough Whitlam not seeing Marvel movies anymore.”Phew, glad I got that down. I’d hate to not have that important information to refer to.

  • orangewaxlion-av says:

Is there anything at all to be read into the final live action frames being from Shang Chi? Is it since they’re just so emotionally worn out from Black Widow nominally being out about a year ago or is it because there was especially positive response to the Shang Chi trailer (I tend to see a lot of AAPI press and essays as is)? … Are they making any sort of concessions towards female leads still somehow being controversial to some geek audiences, or is it just since in general that movie happens to have the next in line new character?

    • TRT-X-av says:

They’re taking this opportunity to promote Shang-Chi on par with Black Widow and all of the other names we know. Because, save for the Eternals, pretty much everybody else in that lineup is a big name MCU hero at this point.

  • chuckrich81-av says:

I’ve never been a big fan of the movie theaters and for the most part I’m happy to continue watching movies from the comfort of my couch. That said, Shang-Chi, Dr. Strange 2 and Black Panther 2 are the ones I more likely than not to see in theaters.

  • peterjj4-av says:

The quote from Stan Lee is beautifully chosen and displayed (I especially like the shots for “she is your sister” and “he is your brother”). I know some could see the shots of the crowd cheering at Endgame as being a bit of a wankfest, but I think it serves as both a reminder of the joy of a movie experience as well as a quiet acknowledgment that those days are gone for the MCU (I don’t think a lot of their new films were going to reach the heights of the mid/late ‘10s numbers even without a pandemic). I keep forgetting how far back the next GOTG will be. I guess they will heavily feature in Thor 4 though.

  • zerozero13-av says:

Where is Blade!!!!Muthafuckas always trying to iceskate uphill…..

  • systemmastert-av says:

I thought we did have word on how the Black Panther stuff will continue, direct from Coogler.  It was going to be stories focusing on the other characters.  So a lot of Nakia, Okoye, Shuri, and M’Baku stuff.

    • mikevago-av says:

The movie had such a deep bench of great actors; any one of those characters could carry the series going forward.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Look, if they make Angela Bassett the new Black Panther and just have her kicking arse for two hours, I’m not going to complain.

    • Ruhemaru-av says:

Which… kinda sounds boring to me. Particularly when it boils down to essentially saying that a single actor totally embodies a character who was in comics ten years before said actor was born. I mean, I’m all for more of the extended cast, particularly in shows and other MCU films but an entire Black Panther movie without The Black Panther just feels wrong to me. Plus I’m not sure MCU Shuri would really work well to carry the mantle the same way Shuri in the comics did.

      • systemmastert-av says:

Dunno why you’re telling me all this, I’m just repeating what Coogler said about the plot, I don’t have an opinion about recasting.

    • kaingerc-av says:

I would be surprised if Shuri doesn’t become the new Black Panther by the end of the movie, but it’s going to get really awkward with how they are going to acknowledge that T’chala is gone without having him in the movie.Did he die off screen? Is he hanging out on the moon with Captain America?

  • c8h18-av says:

Besides the cheer, Thor’s “I KNEW IT!” was perfect.

      • cyrusclops-av says:

Definitely a great payoff to that moment from Age of Ultron!

        • donboy2-av says:

It’s more than that; it’s the culmination of Thor’s entire arc, from an well-meaning but entitled doltish prince to someone who is genuinely overjoyed that his comrade has been proven to be at least as worthy as he himself is.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Thor was truly an audience insert character in that moment.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I have never seen an audience react like that in a theatre before. It was something you felt, like a current was running through the room.

I am just glad we finally get to see a whole new side of Black Window- She does the jump/landing hair flip/hero pose in a WHITE bodysuit instead! The last scene of the movie better be Florence Pugh doing the same move.

  • TRT-X-av says:

One of the suggested links is a flashback…especially since it has the original Phase 4 plan before COVID happened.Knowing how Falcon/Wanda end, seeing the order they were supposed to go in makes way more sense. Black Widow introduces Val, Falcon gives her a bit more to do, then you’ve got Eternals and Shang Chi before Wanda sets the stage for Dr. Strange.Loki and What-If being POST multiverse is interesting as now Loki will be before it.

  • robgrizzly-av says:

It’s almost out of place that the Iron Man sequels are the only MCU movies to be numbered. What subtitles should they have gotten?

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

‘Iron Man 2′ = ‘Iron Man: Demons’. Can refer to the demons of Tony’s past, plus a nod to the ‘Demon in a Bottle’ storyline, as this is pretty much the only film to hint at Tony’s alcohol problem.‘Iron Man 3′ = ‘Iron Man: Extremis’. No big reason for this, just a reference to the main plot point, though it could also refer to Tony’s “extreme” commitment to making more and more suits in a futile attempt to feel safe.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

“Marvel Studios has no plans of digitally having the late actor reprise the role.”It makes my head hurt a little that this is something that a movie studio has to assure us of.
