The story of Cassie Bowden, hard-partying flight attendant turned murder suspect turned CIA asset, has now come to an official close, turns out, as Deadline reports that Max has just pulled the plug on its Kaley Cuoco murder dramedy The Flight Attendant. The show’s second-season finale, which aired way back in May of 2022, will now serve as its series finale, too.

In fact, the biggest surprise today might just be that the formal cancellation notice took this long at all: Cuoco made comments back when the second season aired suggesting that the “plane had landed,” otherwise suggesting she wouldn’t be coming back for a third season. It’s not at all clear why all involved took nearly two years after the fact to formally axe the series.

But axe it has, with Kuoco (who also produced the show, adapted from the novel by Chris Bohjalian) issuing a statement today thanking her fans and collaborators:

What started out as an attention-grabbing book cover quickly evolved into an extraordinary flight of a lifetime. I always envisioned TFA as a limited series and thanks to an incredible creative team, we were able to deliver two thrilling seasons. Personally, playing Cassie has been a dream come true and I am so grateful for everyone who played a part in bringing this extremely original series to life.

Showrunner Steve Yockey chimed in with similar thoughts, calling the series “a true passion project.”

In addition to Cuoco, the series starred Zosia Mamet, Griffin Matthews, and Rosie Perez in both seasons, with Deniz Akdeniz, Mo McRae, Callie Hernandez, J.J. Soria, and Cheryl Hines coming on in the second season, which saw Cuoco’s alcoholic flight attendant Cassie mix in a little light moonlighting with the CIA with her efforts to achieve sobriety—and getting sucked right back into yet another murder that seemed pointed straight at her.

it would’ve been fine as a limited series. i liked season 1 and thought it didn’t need to go further but i’m not going to complain about michelle gomez joining season 2.it was a fun two seasons. i wouldn’t call it a failure by any means. thank you to the cast and crew.

The first season was a pleasant surprise, but the second season really stretched it thin.  I have very little faith a third season would have been watchable.

Dammit, and I just asked her to bring me a blanket.

These streamers are doing a bang up job creating IP with long shelf lives, given that they are littered with two season shows.

It really didn’t need a second season but I enjoyed it anyway. It was fun while it happened, and I think it made good on Kaley Cuoco’s comic hot mess skills, but I don’t think anyone was expecting a third season.

This was a just-okay show that was already pushing the boundaries of suspension of disbelief and clearly would’ve gone off the rails entirely if it had a third season. I’m glad for the two seasons we got, and Kaley Cuoco was stellar in it. Big Bang Theory made her a household name and probably made it so she’ll never have to work a day in her life that she doesn’t want to, but I never would’ve had a clue from her work on that show that she could actually, y’know, act, and even be really good at it. Like, jaw-droppingly good. Hopefully this show will propel her on to projects that can showcase even more of her talent.

Well, Max has now cancelled all the shows I liked that they had. I guess I’m done with them for now. Good work, Zaslav. Keep it up.

I honestly didn’t even know it was supposed to get a third season.

I prefer her new show on Peacock.

I only watched the first season, but quite enjoyed it. It seemed like a stretch that they could even make a second work, though it sounds like they did. Either way kudos to them, it could have been a ridiculous trifle but turned out quite meaningful and good.

Max seems like that bearded network executive from Star Trek’s Mirror World – they show up here and artlessly disassemble what made HBO great.  I can only hope that, there on the other side of the mirror, viewers are still able to see Westworld, as well as not having to endure menus junked up with reality TV treacle.
