Nicki Minaj has earned her place as rap’s elder stateswoman, but she’s burned bridges with a lot of other female rappers along the way. The latest is Megan Thee Stallion, hip hop’s ascendant Hot Girl, with whom Minaj collaborated on Megan’s 2019 smash hit “Hot Girl Summer.” Since then, things have soured between the two; fans suspected Minaj was dissing Megan on her 2023 track “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” which seemingly contained veiled references to Megan being shot by Tory Lanez and how Minaj doesn’t “fuck with horses.” Now, Megan’s snuck a diss of her own into her new track “Hiss,” which was released on Thursday.

“Hiss” begins with a proclamation: “I just wanna kick this shit off by sayin’ fuck y’all/I ain’t gotta clear my name on a motherfuckin’ thing/Every time I get mentioned, one of y’all bitch-ass n—s get twenty-four hours of attention/I’m finna get this shit off my chest and lay it to rest, let’s go.” She goes on to throw shade at several of her haters, with bars that appear to be directed at fans of Lanez, her ex Pardi Fontaine, Drake, and of course, Minaj. “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoes mad at Megan’s Law/I don’t really know what the problem is, but I guarantee y’all don’t want me to start/Bitch, you a pussy (You a pussy), never finna check me (Yeah),” she raps.

“Megan’s Law” refers to the federal law requiring the public release of information regarding registered sex offenders. Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, was arrested in 2020 for failing to register as a sex offender in the state of California; he was convicted of the attempted rape in 1995. Petty and his accuser, Jennifer Hough, were both 16 at the time of the incident. (Hough has since accused Petty and Minaj of harassing her into recanting her rape claim, per Rolling Stone.)

Nicki Minaj Instagram Live 1/26/24 – New Song 🔥🔥 BIG FOOT

Being Nicki Minaj, she didn’t take the “Hiss” diss lying down. She quickly took to Instagram Live (above) to share a song snippet of her own, with the bars: “Bad bitch she like six foot/I call her big foot/The bitch fell off/I said get up on your good foot/three Grammys and can’t find the beat?” Minaj can be heard giggling over the livestream after the clip plays.

In addition to commenting on Megan’s rap skills, the snippet is another reference to the Tory Lanez shooting. (Lanez is currently serving time after being convicted of shooting Megan in her foot.) Minaj further emphasized the point by liking fans’ posts on Twitter/X joking about “big foot” and even posting a picture of her own feet at a fan’s request, ignoring the number one rule of the Internet. (Don’t post your feet for free!)

As far as trading bars goes, this feud is a little lopsided: Megan’s diss is “Your husband is a convicted rapist,” while Minaj’s is “You were the victim of a violent crime.” One can debate the technical prowess of each performer’s raps, but the award for coldest bar here has to go to Megan. Minaj, meanwhile, has cultivated a reputation for pettiness (pardon the pun). While diss tracks and feuds are a long-standing part of rap tradition, Minaj’s tendency to lash out at other artists has somewhat diminished her legacy. If Megan really does “lay it to rest” on “Hiss” and rise above, she’ll definitely come out on top of this particular beef.

Why is she like this? If she simply never made a public statement after 2015 she would be a so much more fondly discussed.

I don’t think she wants to be. Some rappers just want to be seen as hard, dismissive and stubbornly aggressive. Some people would probably call it a gangsta attitude.

Just another notch in the post of my theory that Minaj is a terrible, awful, horrible person.

Oh it’s pretty firmly established at this point. Nicki thinks she’s the queen of rap and will undercut anyone who she feels is competition (aside from signing Ice Spice to her label, I think, but I doubt that works out well for Spice). Megan and Cardi B apparently have reputations of being super helpful and friendly to up-and-coming artists.

Haven’t kept up much with it so that’s good to hear!

“Megan and Cardi B apparently have reputations of being super helpful and friendly to up-and-coming artists.”Sounds more like they apparently have high-grade PR and reputation management

One got shot in the foot, the other did some seriously sketchy stuff as a stripper and is quick to throw down. Both still seem like better people to be friends with. I think Remy Ma might be the only one (in terms of the sorta-mainstream crew) with a worse reputation and that is mainly because she gets herself locked up long enough for people to forget about her.
Nicki… she started off strong but its pretty clear that she’s a better businesswoman when it comes to making money than when it comes to a professional image. I wouldn’t be surprised to wake up one day and see she has a new track featuring R. Kelly and Takeshi with a video directed by Gerard Depardieu that randomly includes a Tupac hologram giving her a crown.

Her alter ego is Roman as in Polanski. That’s all you need to about her

        • frail12-av says:

I mean, think what you like but a lot of this shit plays out on social media which (as seen above) is fairly unfiltered for a lot of artists. No one’s checking what Lil Nas X is tweeting before it goes out.

How’s Nicki’s cousins boyfriends big ass vaccine balls?

Should I root for the pop icon who got her Bachelor’s in Health Administration even though she didn’t have to or the walking talking personality disorder? Really cannot decide.

Nicki Minaj has earned her place as rap’s elder stateswoman, but she’s burned bridges with a lot of other female rappers along the way.Nah. Queen Latifah is rap’s elder stateswoman. Salt-N-Pepa are rap’s elder stateswomen. Hell, even M.I.A. can be described as an elder stateswoman of rap, if you like. Minaj is just exhausting.

    • Ruhemaru-av says:

M.I.A.’s music always sounded unique. The entire production of her songs was just… fresh compared to how most of the music put out by female hip-hope/pop artists. Don’t forget Little Kim, Foxxy Brown, Charlie Baltimore, Remy Ma…
Nicki’s got throne’d kinda early and was putting out ‘meh’ tracks by her second official album. She went from being someone who would kill her verse on a feature to being someone who’s verse gets killed by a feature. She still has some hard bars but I’ve personally found her best work to be using the ‘Roman’ persona, which she seems to have stepped back in mainstream releases.
That said, mainstream female rappers have begun to all mesh for me. The same topics, similar flows, some deliver better. I think Cardi still sounds like a kid when she raps. Ice Spice seems to sound solid. Nicki sounds haughty, and Megan sounds like someone who’s about to get real aggresive.

    • breadnmaters-av says:

If Latifah is the elder stateswoman then Missy Elliot is the Queen, who has four Grammys to Latifah’s one and is the only female rapper in The Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Her music videos are some of the most creative in the biz and she has miltiple film credits. But I figure Latifah is the only one who would have a drink with me 😉

“‘As far as trading bars goes, this feud is a little lopsided: Megan’s diss is ‘Your husband is a convicted rapist,’ while Minaj’s is ‘You were the victim of a violent crime.’”Here’s the thing: rap battles are not really about who has the moral high ground. After all, we’re talking about the same sport where Jay-Z said he left condom wrappers on Nas’ daughter’s baby seat after having sex with Nas’ baby’s mother and Pusha T joked about Drake’s producer Noah ‘40′ Shebib having MS. Rap battles are simply about disrespecting and hurting your opponent as much as possible (and, yes, also out-rapping them). And, yes, Meg is more likable than Nicki and she’s probably a better human being too, but I’m not sure likability or being a better person plays a factor here. It’s simply about who can win in a war of words. With all that being said, I’d probably still edge it to Meg for now because that Megan’s Law line is pretty damn clever…but I’ll also withhold final judgment until Nicki releases her response in full.

  • breadnmaters-av says:

Missy Elliot is the Queen. I hear that Nicki kept trying to beef with her but she wasn’t having it.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Actually, Minaj’s line about how she doesn’t “fuck with horses” is shade on the Russian Empress Catherine the Great, with whom she has a long-standing and inexplicable feud.

  • quetzalcoatl49-av says:

“Bad bitch she like six foot/I call her big foot/The bitch fell off/I said get up on your good foot/three Grammys and can’t find the beat?” Ok, but if you’re going to clap back at another rapper based on rapping prowess, you can’t rhyme Foot with Foot three times.
