Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin are making the jump to streaming television with the new Chuck Lorre-produced Netflix comedy, The Kominsky Method, which follows the antics of Sandy Kominsky (Douglas), a semi-successful former actor turned acting coach, and Norman (Arkin), his agent and confidant. Ahead of the show’s premiere on Netflix tomorrow, we spoke with Douglas and Arkin about the show, and why they still love getting their Netflix via mail (hint: it’s the selection).

We still get DVDs from Netflix. The selection is far better and I was never much for bandwagon jumping. If something works fine for me why should I change? Spare me the “convenience” argument. My parents didn’t raise their son to be a convenience wimp. Also, what kind of a pitiful slob is someone that waiting a few days for a movie and getting off your ass to load it into a DVD player is so much work? I’ve also been around long enough to know what a load of shit the whole mania for rushing to embrace EVERY new technology is. “Better Living Through Chemistry” anyone? I also kind of like spiting assholes who seem to get so bent that somewhere out there someone isn’t following trunk-to-tail.

I too prefer the movies in the mail model.  The streaming works great for the one show my kids get to watch before bed though.

If you really believe that, why are you still not using a VCR?

    • volante3192-av says:

I use both. There’s enough streaming to get me by there, but the discs have the stuff I’m crossing off my list.

I know you’re exaggerating for comic effect, but I’m still amused because disks through the mail were a convenience over schlepping to a Blockbuster and I can see people making the argument without exaggeration or irony.

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

It was more than just convenience, though. Blockbusters were terrible except for getting the literal Hollywood blockbusters as per their name, and I hated that by the mid 1990s they had killed nearly all the indy rental places where I lived that had large foreign movie collections.

I like to watch movies on the airplane. Streaming, with the option to download, is great.

  • karakuwa-av says:

But what do Michael Dorn and Alan Alda think?

  • ospoesandbohs-av says:

There was a while between when I started using Netflix solely streaming and when I actually sent back the one DVD I still had kicking around.

I also prefer the mail service, particularly for Blu-ray discs. You get all the goodies: better picture quality, uncompressed audio, audio commentary, extras etc.
