Miley Cyrus has been performing for the public on an unprecedented scale since she was just a kid. It’s not a surprise to hear that lifestyle has taken a toll on her, nor that she’s changed her approach to performance itself. “Am I going on tour? Yeah, the Aman hotel tour,” she jokes in a new interview with British Vogue. “Singing in the lobby for that complimentary massage.”

In all seriousness, “singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn’t really the thing that I love,” says the pop star, whose first experience doing so was a blockbuster Hannah Montana tour when she was just 16 years old. Cyrus opines that not only is there “no connection” at these shows, but there’s no “safety” either. (That could speak to any number of issues, from the horrifying terrorist attacks experienced by some of her peers to the still-present threat of coronavirus exposure to the security issues that have caused devastating consequences at other concerts.) “It’s also not natural,” she adds. “It’s so isolating because if you’re in front of 100,000 people then you are alone.”

“After the last [headline arena] show I did [in 2014], I kind of looked at it as more of a question. And I can’t,” Cyrus explains. “Not only ‘can’t,’ because can’t is your capability, but my desire. Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own?”

The answer is, apparently, no, as reflected in a journal entry Cyrus shares with Vogue. “I make choices that I’m proud of that protect me… I put my mental and physical health before a paycheque… I freed up space for myself to be with friends and family doing what I love, which is working out, eating well, learning ways about how to enhance my life, staying dedicated to practices and protocols that are specifically designed for me.” A bit of hard-earned wisdom goes a long way.

I was reading her quotes in her voice and now I’m expecting to hear a raspy voiced French bull dog.

    Good for her!

Do I want to live my life for anyone else’s pleasure or fulfillment other than my own? That’s kind of the definition of being a performer, though. Delivering pleasure and/or fulfillment to an audience. But good for her to recognize that she’s reached a point where she gets to make that decision for herself, having achieved enough on the performance front to now live a better life for herself. She can leave more space and oxygen for other performers that are still working to achieve that level.

    • keykayquanehamme-av says:

You’re assuming that she A) accepts that definition of performer, and B) defines herself as one. It sounds like she isn’t on board with at least one of those assumptions.

    “Paycheque”? Has she gone Madonna-faux-Brit?

  • mavar-av says:

or maybe her voice is giving out?

Good, now the public is safe from her as well.

“…doing what I love, which is working out, eating well, learning ways about how to enhance my life, staying dedicated to practices and protocols that are specifically designed for me.” I love it when I can totally relate to a celebrity. Miley just seems so down to earth and real! I can’t wait until my next paycheque. Gonna pay someone to design me my own practices and protocols! beep boop bop

Growing up the way she did I can entirely understand why she needs ‘practices and protocols’ designed for her, because her life has been regimented since she was a kid.

yah I never throw shade at child stars, no matter the level of success into adulthood. I think unless you experienced it, the impacts of fame on your psyche while you are kid is something that can’t really be understood by us non-famous folk.

        • cash4chaos-av says:

yeah child stardom can really mess with a person’s ability to spell the word paycheck so i sympathize with her.

          • AndreaJerkstore-av says:

It’s a quote from British Vogue. They spelled it that way.

          • lazarusmars-av says:

That is the correct way to spell it though.

          • megasmacky-av says:

What a shock- an ignorant American. That’s the correct spelling in the majority of the english-speaking world.

I feel like the P&P is referring to how show venues are managed – security, logistics, etc. Sounds like she has specific requests/demands/expectations before she performs and isn’t interested in performing if they’re not met. I’m not a fan for numerous reasons but I see zero issue with what she’s saying here; it’s one of the more responsible takes from artists that play these kind of venues and festivals that have the potential to devolve into chaos, stampedes, etc.

Interesting that though she does not specify exactly how arena tours are not “safe,” there are innumerable ways in which this is obviously true. I was just curious which one she meant

    • dutchmasterr-av says:

Sounds like she is dropping hints that she wants a Vegas residency.

    • spaceladel-av says:

What ways are those? This all sounds great for her, but I genuinely wonder what she means by “not safe”. I can see how she’d be worried about the climate footprint of a massive arena tour, but I don’t think that’s what she’s talking about.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

The article I think nicely runs down the most obvious safety concerns with arena shows

        • spaceladel-av says:

But none of those things are prevalent risks, and they’re not specific to arena shows. Should we stop all kinds of public gatherings because they might attract terrorists or increase viral infections? Seems both dystopian and counter-productive to me.

  • nemo1-av says:

Oh no….Wish Stevie Nicks isn’t coming to an arena near you…

  • murrychang-av says:

I saw a few arena shows last year and all but one were a shitty experience.  My friends and I decided to skip arena tours in the future too.  Good call Miley!

  • barthalamew-av says:

Good for her. And in a similar vein, her episode on Love Death & Robots is 100% worth checking out.

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

That photo above looks like someone asked an AI to generate a photo of Dannii Minogue.

  • megasmacky-av says:

Is it maybe that she’s no longer a big enough star to fill arenas?
