Matt Groening’s Disenchantment series will make its grand return to Netflix next month. The animated fantasy series wrapped up Part 3 back in January of last year. So, viewers are pretty eager to catch up with Bean, Elfo, Luci, and the medieval kingdom of Dreamland. Luckily, the wait is (almost) over. Disenchantment’s new season will hit Netflix in early February.

The trio spent a good amount of time away from Dreamland last season, and though it looks like this season may promise a bit more of the same, it also appears these escapades will lead to some important answers. The logline for the upcoming part of Disenchantment reads:

The mystery of Dreamland’s origins—and the stakes for its future—become ever clearer as our trio—and King Zøg—find themselves on personal journeys that will ultimately tie in to the kingdom’s fate. Separated at the end of Part III, our heroes race to reunite in this sweeping series of ten episodes. They’ll find themselves everywhere from the depths of Hell to the clouds of Heaven and everywhere in between, including Ogreland, Steamland, underwater, monasteries, insane asylums, the Enchanted Forest, the Dreamscape and more. All the while, puzzle pieces both canonical and personal will reveal themselves to eager fans.

In his review for last season, The A.V. Club writer Vikram Murthi praised the series for its strategic use of humor, writing,Similarly, the series previously balanced standalone adventures against its main serialized narrative to ensure that the plot’s complexities don’t overwhelm the humor. Disenchantment tends to excel when it focuses on jokes. Generally speaking, sight gags, one-liners, and puns tend to linger in the mind longer than the particulars of various narrative strands, especially for a comedy.”

Disenchantment’s main voice cast includes: Abbi Jacobson as Bean, Eric Andre as Luci, and Nat Faxon as Elfo. Other voice cast appearing in “Part 4" are: John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David Herman, Matt Berry, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, Richard Ayoade, and Lucy Montgomery.

Disenchantment will arrive on Netflix on February 9.

Holy crap the seasons of this are so far apart I always forget that it exists and what happened last season.I think the main thing that keeps me coming back is that sweet sweet Mark Mothersbaugh theme song.

    • coolmanguy-av says:

The last season got super plot heavy and I couldn’t keep track of what was going on but it’s a good show to throw on

      • nivoro-av says:

By plot heavy you mean just all over the place, right? Cos there was no coherence to the plot in s.3 my opinion, and the writing and pacing of it all was terrible. Not a good show overall.

    • mrpuzzler-av says:

I never once cared about the ongoing mysteries. Every other episode the kingdom is conquered or destroyed or the main characters (who are basically all terrible people) are cast into hell, and then everything returns to the status quo (which is a pretty miserable world anyway). There is no way the long-running plots can matter, when nothing really matters.

I’ve watched this pretty much only out of loyalty to other Matt Groening shows but damn is it a slog. I kept falling asleep during the third season

  • refinedbean-av says:

Did last season get funny? I kinda need the show to be funnier. The whole thing feels…empty. I don’t know how else to explain it. I try to watch it and it’s like opening up bags of chips but there’s nothing in them.

    • kroboz-av says:

It’s a good show, and the third season (second season part 1?) had some good moments. But there aren’t the big laugh moments Futurama seemed to land consistently. And the pacing feels like they’re leaving a *bit* too much room for the joke to sink in. “You get it? Did you catch that? The joke we made?” It’s an animated comedy meant for watching and rewatching. Needs more jokes per minute. It’s interesting to see Groening’s work shift from being about raising a young family to thinking about what the future realistically brings to now reflecting on mental decline, dementia, and passing the torch to the next generation. Groening’s the same age as my dad, and we went through my grandparent’s dementia about a decade ago. So the “King Zog begins his mental decline” stuff hits in a way that feels big-T True in a unique way.IDK. I like the show. Wish it were funnier like early Futurama. But still one I’ll have replaying in the background as I work.

It got better, but no, not as funny as Futurama or classic Simpsons. In part it’s because I think they actually want to make serious points — that Bean’s nihilism and alcohol abuse aren’t solving anything, that Elfo’s obsession with her is toxic, etc. I just don’t think they are doing it particularly well.

      • brianth-av says:

I’m OK with it having more serious themes, and the related serial rather than episodic structure. I would not say it is the best such attempt I have ever seen, but I find it at least good enough to be a positive experience overall for me.That said, I do think in the context of other Groening shows, and in fact given what this shows occasionally does itself, it is hard not to feel like there is a much funnier version of this show just out of view, which they could have made but chose to make this instead. And again intellectually I am fine with that choice, but at the same time I think it will inevitably lead many of us to a constant vague feeling of missing out 0n something we might have liked better.

I didn’t watch Season 3 as I guess I’ve kind of given up on it (it’s still in my list/queue though so maybe I will someday).

    • jomahuan-av says:

i have watched every episode and i have no idea what the show is about. i expect this season will be no different.

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

I find it amusing, but it’s not laugh-out-loud hilarious. I think I just connect with Bean because I come from a dysfunctional broken family and relate to some of the problems she goes through.

    • nivoro-av says:

I feel like every season so far has been bad, but the third season I found to be super terrible throughout – I couldn’t stand watching and yet still finished it cos it had this thing in s. 1-2 where the last ep. was kinda fun, but not during s.3… I won’t get suckered in a fourth time… I promise… Why’re looking at me all funny like that? I tell you, it’s over! Okay, maybe if there really isn’t anything else to watch… But only then!

    • hotwheeler-av says:

Why does the show have to be funny? I look at it as an adventure animation.

Do you complain Anime isn’t funny enough? 99 percent of it isn’t. Just stories.

I look at Disenchantment as an adventures story.

I never found Futurama all that funny. Some episodes had some laughs especially the one about Al and Leela take off of Married With Children.
In fact I found it hard to put up with Fry’s incredibly stupidity. The character is dumber than a box of rocks. But I still love the show.

  • themightymanotaur-av says:

Show has been a good watch so far. Takes it time to get going but once it does the characters are fun and the whole world seems a bit nuts. Plus Matt Berry!!

  • TheSadClown-av says:

Ah, yes, my very first ‘why am I still watching this?’ show of the year.

    • recognitions69-av says:

I enjoyed it as it wasn’t good enough to keep my attention but while I’m staring at my phone I can get a laugh or two in the background. Plus I like the voice actors.Would prefer more Futurama, but hey, what can you do.

  • thegobhoblin-av says:

Just yesterday I was disappointed because I assumed Disenchantment had been canceled and Netflix just hadn’t gotten around to mentioning it. I’m glad I got this news today.

Herbalicious!I’m really, REALLY hoping that Defector might decide to open a pop-culture vertical, and get some of the departing, and past departed AVClubbers to step in.
Hell, start with the ones from The Dissolve and I’ll sign up for a paid year right now!

      • goodbyeforeverkinja123-av says:

Yeah, I would love to see Defector branch out and bring in pop-culture type content. I loved Deadspin, but I’m not enough of a sports fan to justify actually paying for sports content alone. Either way, here’s wishing the staff leaving AV Club all the best wherever they end up.

        • lectroid-av says:

I don’t do sports AT ALL, but occasionally read Deadspin for its non-sports content, but, like you, that wasn’t enough to make me spring for a sports-centric site like Defector. Tell me Drew is gonna start doing movie reviews Siskel & Ebert style with Dowd, Rabin, or Robinson, and I would sign up in a heartbeat.

sight gags, one-liners, and puns tend to linger in the mindOne that stuck with me is when they board a barge and it’s called El De Barge

  • 4jimstock-av says:

I was hoping that the show had ended . I wanted to like it more than I did.

  • ghostofghostdad-av says:

    Fuck G/O Media

  • spartanhabits-av says:

Every comment that I read here defending this show basically tells me that it is very mediocre. More than enough reason for me not to watch.

    • nonoes-av says:

mediocre is spot on. i’m sure i watched the second season, can’t even remember if i watched the third.

    • brianth-av says:

It isn’t great, but I also think it is interesting in some ways. A lot of mediocre things are not even trying to do anything interesting. I see this as a show trying to do something interesting, but with mediocre success. And that assessment may well support your conclusion you have no need to watch it. But I’m interested enough to be looking forward to another season, despite definitely not being willing to give it an unqualified endorsement.

  • fanburner-av says:

The only question I need the answer to: will Bean make out with her hot mermaid girlfriend Mora again?

  • erikveland-av says:

I can’t tell you anything that happened in season 3 yet I somehow watched all of it.

    • erikveland-av says:

I got to a point where I couldn’t remember watching part 4 or not, and I watched a few episodes (again?) and I still can’t tell if I’ve seen them before or not.I finally turned it off during the one where the ventriloquy dummy comes to life when I got to the middle of the episode and there hadn’t been a single joke or funny moment. Like there was a whole set piece at a comedy club where they were meant to roast Zøg and there wasn’t …a …single …joke.

  • giantclaw-av says:

I really want to like this show more, but I still haven’t finished S3 – it’s been a slog to get through, and not as funny or engaging as the first two seasons, but I do really like the characters and there are some funny gags, but MAN.. I hope the next season is better, whenever it is that I get around to watching it.

  • patrickurrutia-av says:

Didnt everyone in Disenchantment already go to Hell like 2 or 3 times?
