Amid the hustle and Glenn Close-booty-bustle of last night’s Oscars, Hulu dropped the first teaser for Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelley’s latest, extremely Dramatic collab: Nine Perfect Strangers. Featuring an absolutely cuckoo number of famous people, including noted cuckoo extraordinaire Michael Shannon, the new series casts Kidman as a guru (it’s about damn time) who runs a wellness retreat that is probably almost definitely more of a cult.

If you, too, are tired of watching long-haired men emotionally manipulate wealthy people into blatant pyramid schemes, then boy do our friends Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelley have the series for you. As with the pair’s previous collab—HBO’s Big Little Lies—their latest effort is based on a bestselling novel by Liane Moriarty. In addition to our evil GOOP queen, Nine Perfect Strangers stars Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Luke Evans, Bobby Cannavale, Regina Hall, Samara Weaving, Melvin Gregg, Asher Keddie, Grace Van Patten, Tiffany Boone, and Manny Jacinto. Here’s Hulu’s official plot synopsis for the series, which debuts later this year:

Based on The New York Times bestselling book by author Liane Moriarty, Nine Perfect Strangers takes place at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Watching over them during this ten-day retreat is the resort’s director Masha (Nicole Kidman), a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies. However, these nine “perfect” strangers have no idea what is about to hit them.

I’m so excited for this series!

sinister wellness guruRedundant phrase is redundant.

You are right Britt, that is a terrific cast! I read this book just a couple months ago. Had some good humour in it, which I hope they kept.

Regina King is one of my favorite actors. Also it’s so nice to Melissa McCarthy in something not made by her husband. His comedies aren’t my thing at all. Glad to see Manny Jacinto in something else too.

You might be disappointed to learn that this stars Regina Hall then…

Shit I meant Regina Hall, I blame an Oscar thing I was reading before. King is great too, but I go out of my way to watch Hall in stuff. Support The Girls and Black Monday (which even makes a joke about confusing them) are great.

She is absolutely the best part of Black Monday. That is saying a lot because that is a stacked cast.

Melissa McCarthy was great in “Can You Ever Forgive Me” – played with her usual “frumpy socially-unaware” character bit, but for tragedy instead comedy. I bet she would have won Best Actress that year, if she weren’t up against Olivia Colman’s legendary performance in the Favourite.

excited! I did a few guru breathwork retreats when I first entered drug recovery, some were amazing and were a one off with the coach and I attribute my sobriety to some of those retreats. Others felt very manipulative in wanting to prey on my pain (not just for money but for some reason wanting aggressively to watch me break down). It’s hard to research your guru too because often they have very devoted people to them.

I really hope Manny Jacinto is just playing Jason Mendoza in this. That would be a fun stylistic collision.

I would join a cult run by Nicole Kidman, no questions asked.

But tell me about her coats! Will there be more beautiful coats?

find me a wellness guru who isn’t sinister

  • robert-moses-supposes-erroneously-av says:

Oh this does look fun – same writer, director, and star of BLL, but with potentially more camp? I’m ready.

    • junwello-av says:

I read the book and this is a great, great part for Kidman, I’m excited to watch her in this and that hasn’t been the case for quite a while.

Nine Perfect Strangers is, without a doubt, one of the most batshit books I’ve ever read. Just when you think it couldn’t get weirder (or, frankly, dumber), it does.In other words, I cannot wait to see this mess on screen.
