The multiplex was a ghost town last Halloween. One year later, it’s bursting with Hollywood horror offerings. Even if one excludes the bona fide fright fare (including another Michael Myers rampage, a seventh round of Paranormal Activity, and a ’90s themed entry in the V/H/S franchise), this October boasts monsters of super-heroism, super-villainy, and organized crime. Meanwhile, those who find something a little too scary about the thought of returning to a theater just yet can get their seasonal fix of thrills and chills from Shudder, Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount+. Keep reading to find out everything that’s coming to theaters and a (haunted) house near you this spooky season.

I had been planning on watching nothing but horror in October (except for Dune, on IMAX), starting with Malignant. But it appears to be leaving theaters in Chicago just then.

Sorry to all of the other horrow movies, but the best scary flick this season is already out and it’s Malignant. A thousand apologies!

Just a clarification- Along with both films playing theatrically, MGM is putting The Addams Family 2 on Premium VOD day and date, and Universal is doing the same with Halloween Kills; it’ll be streaming for Premium subscribers of Peacock on 10/15, with no upcharge.

“Unfortunately, as with all contemporary crime movies, there’s Shea Whigham to contend with” – is a pretty funny line. I’ll probably watch that one. And the Idris Elba one has a ridiculously talented cast, and… I like the shots of him still in his prison stripes, on horseback. And yeah, I’m not remembering the titles because.. slideshow. I only have so many clicks in me.I’m pretty happy that John Ridley is doing Needle in a Timestack (mentioned at the end of the slide show). It’s based on a Robert Silverberg novel and could be a darn good movie.

I hope Mike Meyers is making another Austin Powers movie.  I loved them all.

I think the question of whether a person is the “right one” to tell a certain story is a bit loaded. Yes, as a white woman Hall might miss some things, but the idea that we’re only allowed to make autobiographies in art is kind of damaging.

Also, apparently Hall is African-American on her mother’s side (wellll, that and a couple other things). I think she obviously goes well past “passing” herself, but who am I to judge?

I think Blade Runner 2049 is one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in the last couple years. It’s has issues (like being way too long), but watching it I had the same intrigued/confused feeling that I remember from watching the original as a teenager. That’s all to say that I’m hoping Dune continues to perform well and that Villeneuve gets to keep doing his thing.
