Oh fuck, Tig Notaro's in this new Star Trek: Discovery trailer

Aux Features TV

We’ve known since April that comedian Tig Notaro would be making an unexpected stop in space some time soon, with Variety reporting that the One Mississippi creator had been cast in a small role in the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Discovery. That doesn’t make it any less of a delightful surprise to see her pop up in today’s new trailer for the show from Comic-Con, being very typically wry about whatever space-based nonsense Michael Burnham is getting worked up about this week.

The overall tone of the trailer is something like, “Okay, this time it’s going to be fun!” introducing lots of extra levity, including Ensign Tilly rocking out about math, and some fun, alien-sneeze-based comedy. You don’t have to take our word for it, though; just listen to the gentle rhythms of Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away” as it plays over the introduction of new captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount, not yet confined to his canonical beeping wheelchair)—truly the most fitting musical choice the franchise has been gifted with since the heady days of James Kirk’s Beastie Boys phase.
