Yes, right now you can see Timothée Chalamet chowing down on human flesh in Bones And All, but the Call Me By Your Name star’s next food-themed film is going to be very different. As you’ll recall, he’s playing a young version of the eponymous chocolatier in Wonka, and anticipation is high to see how his performance will stack up to previous interpretations by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.

“He’s doing something different,” co-star Olivia Colman says while chatting with Variety. “It’s such a treat. He’s so beautiful on-screen. He’s magical.”

Now, is this treat a Wonka Bar? An Everlasting Gobstopper? That freaky gum that turns Violet Beauregarde into a giant blueberry? How about the Fruit Roll-Ups that were used for the cannibalism scenes in Bones And All? The Empire Of Light star didn’t elaborate further than saying that audiences will “love” his performance, so we’ll just have to see when the movie comes out in another year.

Besides Chalamet and Colman, Wonka also co-stars Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Natasha Rothwell, and Matt Lucas. Key has previously teased that the Charlie And The Chocolate Factory prequel features seven different musical numbers, describing the project as “wondrous and a little bit epic.”

Wonka was directed by Paddington’s Paul King. Roald Dahl’s bibliography is being set up for something of a renaissance after Netflix acquired the rights to his entire catalog, though Wonka is part of a previous deal with Warner Bros. The streamer is launching Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical this weekend and has other adaptations in the works, such as Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar and multiple Charlie And The Chocolate Factory spin-offs helmed by Taika Waititi.

Wonka is expected in theaters on December 15, 2023.

I can’t fucking stand this guy’s perfect cheekbones, perfect jawline, perfect, hair, perfect eyes, and perfect EVERYTHING. I just want to punch all that perfect.

I hate that shitty movie and its creepy tunnel and have zero interest in the Wonkaverse.

I’m glad I’m finally getting old enough to differentiate between things that are truly poorly made and stuff that just doesn’t personally appeal to me.

All I have to say is even as an adult with no kids I have found both Paddingtons completely wonderful and will follow Paul King anywhere.

Can we just not remake this movie again.  The Gene Wilder one is perfect, and frankly the only musical I really enjoy.  The Burton/Depp one was, well it was there. I usually like Burtons style, but yeah.

The way he had Depp play Wonka was inexplicable and wrecked any chance the movie had of being decent.

      • liffie420-av says:

Yeah Depps Wonka was to, I don’t know over the top and goofy acting with those giant fake teeth. Where Wilders was more subdued but also some how menacing and sinister. Like in the back of your mind you almost thing Wilders Wonka is gonna snap and kill everyone to turn them into candy.  And man the boat ride from the first movie that to this day is probably one of the what in the holy hell turns in a kids movie, like ever. Like straight out of left field.

        • bcfred2-av says:

Wilder always had that look in his eyes like he was deciding what to do with you.

          • liffie420-av says:

Exactly, like he is the friendly candy maker but at the same time he looks like he might kill you. Like his Wonka was always just on the verge of going full serial killer. Like this maybe we can be friends or maybe ill cook your liver with fava beans.  Like he’s sitting there “I wonder what children taste like?”  Hmm maybe maybe not.

I feel like it’s important that, physically, Wilder is pretty normal. Kind of unremarkable, slightly nebbishy looking guy. In a different outfit, he’d fit right in at any corporate office. But it’s when he starts talking and interacting with people that the weirdness comes out, and builds. And builds.

          • liffie420-av says:

Yeah like on the surface he is a kooky eccentric candy maker, but the more time you spend with him it’s like, umm something isn’t right here.

      • anthonystrand-av says:

It probably would have been too taxing for him at age 82, but I kind of wish Burton had just gone ahead and cast Christopher Lee as Wonka. Wonka’s an old man who’s about to retire, after all.

        • bcfred2-av says:

Another reason Depp’s version made no sense.  Aren’t you a little young to be a Forbes 400 candy mogul??

  • nenburner-av says:

Timothee Chalamet’s agent is on a role with getting this guy roles that perfectly fit his weird “space twink that’s aloof to the point of psychopathy” vibe: first Paul Atreides, now Wonka.

Wait is Olivia Colman f***ing Timothy Camembert?Good for her I guess if so

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

“Audiences will love Timothy’s performance. I, Olivia Colman, command it!”
