Our way-too-early Oscars 2025 predictions

Thanks to the delayed release of Dune: Part Two and other possible contenders we get to keep up our tradition of ridiculously premature prognostication

Two years ago, right around the time Everything Everywhere All At Once came out during awards season, we thought it would be a fun and admittedly silly exercise to try and predict which films would be part of an awards season that was still a year away. Our early predictions for 2023 turned out pretty well, even if one of them didn’t actually pan out until this year (yep, that’s how long Martin Scorsese has been waiting to not win an Oscar again for a film with multiple nominations). It went so well we figured we’d try again last year for 2024, and hit on seven of the 10 nominees for Best Picture.

But even if we hadn’t already established a pattern, we might have been tempted to invent it from scratch anyway after the recent release of last year’s delayed Oscar contender, Dune: Part Two. In fact, we’ve already engaged in some wild speculation about what the Oscar race might have looked like had it come out when it was supposed to last fall. Now, we’re turning our gaze toward the future and what might be in store come next awards season. It’s a harder year to predict than usual this far out, as the industry continues to deal with the aftermath of last year’s work stoppages due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But we’re going to give it a shot anyway, so join us for our way-too-early look at the promising films and stars that may become contenders in 2025.

Every Oscars race has to have a sentimental favorite, right? A crowd pleaser. A money maker. Something for the viewers at home. It can’t all be doom and gloom, after all. We already got a little preview of what might be in store in 2025 during this year’s ceremony, when Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande came out to present a couple of awards in color-coded attire evoking their characters, Elphaba and Galinda. Based on the trailers alone, the film looks to have an elaborate production design to rival the hit Broadway musical it’s based on, and there’s a good chance it could also land in at least a few other technical categories too, like costumes, hair and makeup, or sound. So yeah, we think it’s quite possible Erivo and Grande might be back on the stage next year to represent their multi-nominated film, and could even be nominees themselves. As someone told us lately, “Everyone deserves the chance to fly.”

Sons of Anarchy: The Movie  is not getting an Oscar nom. You heard it here first.

    • samo1415-av says:

      I’ll take that bet.

To be clear I am betting against your prediction. The Bikeriders will get at least one oscar nom.

I have no desire to even see this movie, but think it will be nominated at least once.

      • dk1979-av says:

Fine agreed. I was thinking Best Pic nom.But sure, it might get a rando nom or some shit for a useless category like the “We are sick and tired of this Austin Butler guy”

Jodie Comer for Best Supporting Actress.

    • thepowell2099-av says:

i’d disagree with you except that i checked, and despite delivering such critically lauded films as Take Shelter and Loving, he’s never been nominated for an Oscar.

I’ve been interested in Megalopolis for a while, but I’ve gotta say: That cast seems, um…. eclectic? I don’t know why, but for whatever reason it seems like casting individually talented people who would agree to the project and hoping the initial table reads go well.

Dune 2 was the first time since Dunkirk that I’ve really felt exhilaration in a movie theatre. Acting aside, it’s my early vote for Directing, Editing, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, VFX, Sound, Production Design, Costuming.Maybe even Picture depending on how the other contenders hold up.

While I didn’t love the film’s take on Shaddam IV or Alia, everything else was pretty much a home run for me.  And those parts that didn’t work were so small, they were easy to overlook.

      • interlinked-av says:

The take on Chani made those two seem insignificant changes for me. But they did do Shaddam IV and Alia (and Irulan) dirty in the movies.

    • andros5000-av says:

Agreed on all those points.  Hans Zimmer also deserves another Oscar.  His soundtracks continue to impress, and this one is no exception.  Some of the most beautiful movie music ever!

    • omegaunlimited2-av says:

Agreed. I’m really bored by fight scenes these days, but Dune 2 built anticipation and delivered. It helped that the fight sequences were shorter than in a MCU movie, where two CGI characters punch each other for ten minutes.

      • jthane-av says:

My only complaint was the quasi-western-style fight cinematography where you don’t get to see the fighters’ entire bodies – especially in the final duel. At least there were a good number of long unedited exchanges, which was good; they weren’t jump-cut together.

Call me crazy (you wouldn’t be the first) but I feel like Zendaya might be worthy of some consideration for Dune Part Two as well.

That Wicked movie looks like an absolute bomb, and it’s not because of Ariana Grande’s eyebrows. Are we still doing movies based on musicals? That trend didn’t die out after Rent in 2004?

    • daddddd-av says:

The new thing is movies based on musicals based on movies (Mean Girls, The Color Purple, a third example that probably exists idk)

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

The Producers. And Waitress. What I want to see is the next step – a new Broadway musical based on a movie based on a musical based on a movie.

FILM SILENCE! THE MUSICAL YOU COWARDS.

  • murrychang-av says:

I feel like superhero flicks are really going to have their time in the sun this year:  Look for Marvel and DC movies to sweep most if not all of the categories.

  • Ruhemaru-av says:

I’m still mixed on Joker. The performance was great. It felt like someone mashed a bunch of Scorsese films together then applied some DC comics branding to ensure people actually went to the theaters to see it.
For some reason I see it as the equivalent of someone making a Thanos movie in the style of Aronofsky. Or a Ninja Turtles movie in the style of Wes Anderson. Maybe Saga in the style of Tarantino? Transformers in the style of Herzog? Greta Gerwig’s Lady Death. Garland’s The Darkness. Kill Six Billion Demons in the style of Hitchcock with Ryuhei Kitamura on choreography. Nolan’s Girl Genius. I’ve gone far from my criticism and now can’t help but think of comic movies trapped in the copied styles of long-time directors/creatives.
…but now I really want a Transformers movie with Tarn sounding like Herzog.

    • shillydevane2-av says:

Joker doesn’t need a sequel. My bet this movie is going to feel contrived, like Silence of the Lambs 2 felt.

    • simplepoopshoe-av says:

But is “good movies remixed with comic-book skin” really what we want/good…?

  • Caniborrowafeeling-av says:

My overriding thought about The Bikeriders: I’m sure I’ll get used to Tom Hardy’s voice by the halfway point of the movie…

  • adamthompson123-av says:

Why does Cindy White always write in first person plural? Is she a queen?

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

I kind of feel like Joker hurt Joaquins career which is super odd. But that movie sucked and I will never understand the demand for it. The incel school-shooter crowd has really gotten big!

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

“Sure, there have been reports of turmoil behind the scenes, but that’s just part of Coppola’s process”

What era was this sentence written in…?

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

I was in music theatre school in 2010 which is to say that any woman walking around the corner in the halls would be singing “Defying Gravity” from Wicked… I don’t like Ariana Grande but I think I need to see this.

  • simplepoopshoe-av says:

To the uninitiated: Idina Menzel originated the Wicked Witch on broadway. Her big hit song was “Defying Gravity”. Years later Idina Menzel went on to star in the movie Frozen and sung a comparably epic song called “Let It Go”.

Long story short, tears might role down my face when I see that song on the big screen.

Saw a trailer for The Bikeriders this weekend, and while the trailer seemed interesting, I laughed out loud when the title card came up. I don’t care what the origin of it is, it’s a terrible, terrible name.Reminded me of the badass bike gang in The 9th Configuration who referred to themselves as ‘cyclists.’ Completely killed what they were going for.

Remember when Austin Butler was in that terrible Shannara series on MTV a few years ago? I think his career is the only one to survive.
