Paul Feig’s Spy is one of the high points of the action/comedy spy movie parody genre, and now he might be preparing for his return to that hyper-specific genre—though, evidently, not yet for the long-awaited Spy 2. Instead, Deadline says he’s “eyeing” a yet-untitled spy comedy that is “in very early development” for Paramount with Sebastian Stan and Maria Bakalova attached to star.

The script comes from Welcome To Flatch’s Jenny Bicks, and Deadline says it’s about a “failed double agent who becomes an unlikely success,” which is pretty vague and unhelpful. We would guess Stan is the spy, and maybe Bakalova is some bad guy who he accidentally captures? Then everyone thinks he’s a good double agent but actually he’s not?

Spy was more high-concept than that (Melissa McCarthy had to be the spy and Jason Statham was kind of a dope!), and we would guess that there must be something clever about this premise of Feig is interested, so just assume that the movie will be more interesting than whatever we’re pitching off the top of our heads.

Stan, of course, plays Bucky Barnes—the Winter Soldier—in the Marvel movies, and he’ll be reprising his role in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. He’s also in the middle of a lengthy hot streak, coming off of Pam & Tommy and Fresh and I, Tonya. Bakalova, of course, plays Cosmo—the Spacedog—in the upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, and in addition to starring in Bodies Bodies Bodies, most people first saw her in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. There’s no word on if Cosmo The Spacedog or Bucky Barnes will ever meet up in the MCU, but obviously everyone is just clamoring for it.

Why is the word “clamoring” italicized?  Am I missing a pun?

    Lady Ghostbusters was so bad.

Based on that photo, he’s completed his metamorphosis into an SnL character.

He looks like a whack 90s kid show host who teaches kids about stuff…but makes it fun. And I’m all for that. “This is the International Bureau of Weights & Measures – pretty boring, right? WRONG! Let’s check it out!”

Spy was great. Feig is (typically) very solid.

The more I think about it, Ghostbusters might have been an outlier where it was a confluence of various factors and inputs that led to Feig giving into his worst impulses. I like most of his stuff but that one just… ugh.The decision (and I have no idea if it was Feig’s or if the studio insisted) to make it more or less a rehashing of the main beats of the original didn’t help; it was a decision as baffling as Paramount thinking redoing Wrath of Khan was a good idea.

A real waste of talent, who could have made another solid original action-comedy but instead Hollywood’s dependence on IP produced that instead.

Yeah. I’ll admit to not being the biggest Melissa McCarthy fan in the world but I love Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon, plus Leslie Jones is often great (I especially loved her in Coming 2 America). It could’ve been a darn good movie that stood on its own merits, and wouldn’t have suffered from comparisons – both overall and in how specific story beats were handled – to a film that is not only a beloved classic, but one that Sony were trying to directly cash in on nostalgia for.

I really f*cking love Spy. It’s one of those movies I put off watching forever due to Melissa McCarthy burnout, when really it was just Melissa McCarthy’s husband’s movies burnout. That movie is just a damn delight. Everyone in the cast sparkles. Rose Byrne in particular just f*cks me up. “What a stupid f*cking toast. You’re delightful.” Dead. (also “slutty dolphin trainer”)

Pretty much every line is quotable in that movie. “Don’t talk to me! You’re not my friend!” Don’t forget the British/Italian agent! ALdo

Then everyone thinks he’s a good double agent but actually he’s not?I hope Bakalova’s the double agent, preferably a terrible honeypot, and Stan’s the straight-man spy bringing her in.I’m sure Bakalova’s just itching to take the piss out of these scabs:

Agreed. And the full version has an incredible montage of dick pics.

I distinctly remember audibly laughing when Jason Statham is talking about being put in the Face/Off machine.

Screw Bond, I think Spy should have been a franchise. The movie was delightful, and notable for having so many female characters with different personalities, motives, and relationships to McCarthy’s character.

    Ghostbusters 2016 was amazing.

I get that the morons whining about it for years were exhausting, but what was the amazing part? What memorable dialogue sticks in your head from it? I barely remember anything except Zach Woods doing some of his shtick. Also won tons.

I thought it was one of the best use of Kate McKinnon. On the other hand, it pales in comparison to Spy for Melissa McCarthy. Overall, it was good but not great.

        • beadgirl-av says:

Spy is by far the superior movie, but I genuinely enjoyed Ghostbusters, and if I catch it on TV I will watch it. I loved McKinnon’s character and how weird she was allowed to be without being pathetic.
