Until his death in 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman was a longtime creative collaborator with director Paul Thomas Anderson, appearing in films like Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, Boogie Nights, and—perhaps most notably—The Master, and now it looks like Anderson has found a touching way to pay tribute to Hoffman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker has cast Cooper Hoffman, the son of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as the lead in his next film.

The movie is some kind of 1970s-set coming-of-age story in California that involves multiple storylines, with Hoffman starring as a child actor (or maybe former child actor, since Newsweek says he’s “around 16 or 17-years old”). Hoffman will be appearing alongside Alana Haim (from some rock trio that has worked with Anderson a few times in the past on music videos and other music-related videos). This will be the feature acting debut of both Hoffman and Haim, but they’ll reportedly be joined by Bradley Cooper, who at least has some experience treading the proverbial boards. THR doesn’t mention any other potential cast members, and that’s essentially all we know about this.

“Get out of my office, Cooper Hoffman, and don’t come back until you have a third name!”

Essentially all we know about this???? Anyway, Ben Safdie is playing the mayor of the city.

This sounds interesting. I like the idea of using non-actors and it’s sweet that he wrote a role for Hoffman’s son. My favorite Hoffman performance is the mattress man. Punch Drunk Love rules.

      That’s that!

Brandt all the way.Okay, maybe not all the way, but the last time I watched Lebowski I tried to pay a little more attention to Hoffman / Brandt and realized just how great the character was.

Mine too, even though the character’s story arc amounts to absolutely nothing. He’s scary as shit when he starts screaming on the phone. (Get a load of Hoffman being a trooper during this outtake!)

Anderson is not afraid of a Robert Altman move. Altman often cast non-actors in key roles (Not always to benefit of the movie, I might add. Sometimes it worked.)

I don’t know if the two main kids in OC & Stiggs were actors or not, but they did a great job (besides the opening scene).I know it’s a pretty reviled film, but I love it. I would say that and Brewster McCloud would be in my Altman top five.

With Bradley Cooper seeming to play Jon Peters and Haim as Barbara Streisand, it sounds like the making of A Star is Born will play into this movie. It truly feels like PTA saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and said “hold my milkshake.”

I don’t think there’s any indication the Haim sister is actually playing Streisand. That was just wild speculation bouncing off from the Jon Peters thing.

Oh, man.  Not another movie about the 1970’s.  Damn it.  I’m already fearing the potential soundtrack.  Let’s get back to doing movies like “There Will Be Blood”, Paul.

Ew. Not a fan of this idea.
