While the film trailer industrial complex might lead you to believe otherwise, not all covers are sad bummer mixes. (The trailer for The Social Network still rules, though.)

Thank god, Miley Cyrus is here to set things straight. Save Our Stages Fest, a streaming music festival in support of the National Independent Venue Association which took place over the weekend, saw heavy-hitters like The Roots, Foo Fighters, Leon Bridges, Phoebe Bridgers, Rise Against, The Lumineers, Major Lazer, and Cyrus take to the stages of legendary independent venues like Troubadour, Ryman Auditorium, Crystal Ballroom, the Apollo, and (in Cyrus’ case) L.A.’s Whisky A Go-Go. Maybe it’s a good thing that this was a streaming concert and not one of the old-fashioned in person kinds, because she absolutely blew the doors off the place.

If you’re a person in the habit of thinking of Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana and maybe “Party In The U.S.A.” and nothing else, you might be in for a bit of a shock. Please, grab your smelling salts. (Also, “Party In The U.S.A.” is a marvelous pop song.)

So, are we officially past pretending that this woman isn’t a rock star? Because good god, that’s a hell of a cover. And it’s not an outlier—as one’s best friend Lesley might say, “Oh, she’s just being Miley.” Thank you, Miley Cyrus, for not giving us a bummer mix sad acoustic cover of “Zombie” and instead just doing The Cranberries proud.

That said, Miley also has a knack for bummer mix covers, too:

And really just covers in general. Come on, this is great:

Seriously, she’s good. She should consider a career as a musician!

    I mean, yeah. Holy shit.

  • south-of-heaven-av says:

Can’t be worse that that terrible nu-metal version my local rock station insists on playing (I assume it’s Five Finger Death Punch but I don’t care enough to verify that).

Some new band called “Wolves.” I enjoyed the cover, but the rest of their work is as bland and banal as it gets.

      • zirconblue-av says:

“Bad Wolves”, actually.  I like the cover, but agree that nothing else I’ve heard from them has been very compelling.

    • gospelxforte-av says:

It’s surprisingly alright, but it took a couple of listens for me to feel that way. Apparently O’Riordan had agreed to record vocals for that version; the night she agreed to do so was unfortunately the same night she died.

is that the one that changes the line “the same old thing since 1916″ to “2018″? I may have overreacted to that one.

      We’re really missing a weigh-in from Reposted A7x fan

  • robert-denby-av says:

I kinda wish Miley’s career drifted more toward alt-county like Emmylou Harris or Lucinda Williams, because she’s got a great voice for it.

    • triohead-av says:

She’s got time. May as well be a rockstar while she’s young, then pivot to a mellower alt-country sound late-career.
(Btw, I remember when these background sessions came out, she’s great on all of them.)

      • kirivinokurjr-av says:

Yeah, she’s young. Think of Mandy Moore. It took her a long time to get away from her more, let’s say, manufactured material she was known for in her teen years, and probably had an even tougher time getting away from and recovering from being with Ryan Adams. Now, she seems pretty happy making music that she says is more her and collaborating with cool musicians, and the new stuff is definitely more up my alley.

    • cremazie-av says:

It’s really a shame that she wasn’t born a decade or two earlier, because these covers make a very good case for how talented she would be as frontman for a rock band. Sadly… rock isn’t really mainstream enough anymore for that career path.

  • kinosthesis-av says:

A bit shout-y for my tastes.
Also, she looks like the cocaine girl Heidi Gardner just played on SNL.

  • sonicoooahh-av says:

That was a rocking cover and the band really helped. Cool video and I’ll have to check out several of the other #SOSFest performances. Of course, it being The Cranberries and all, I kind of wish the “related links” embed had picked-up the post about Irish Women in Harmony’s cover of “Dreams” because it’s still burned in my head several months later and though more low-key, the song for a different charity is certainly worth a re-listen.

  • moonrivers-av says:

Eh, didn’t blow the doors off my ears or whatever, but it was…fine!I felt like this article was in the vein of those “Trump gets OBLITERATED during weather report!” videos/links/ultimately nothings.I see that plenty of other commenters were really ‘affected’ by this not-terrible cover – so I’m probably the outlier

  • mikolesquiz-av says:

Look, Miley Cyrus is an excellent singer with a remarkable stylistic range – it is known and has been for a long time-  but you’re not going to ever talk me into believing “Party In The USA” isn’t a dogshit disaster of a pop song.

    • yllehs-av says:

I think someone could do a less slick & less Auto-Tuned version of Party in the USA and it would be significantly better.

  • jankybrows-av says:

Huh. Say what you will about that Heart of Glass cover (It’s good), but Miley sure can enunciate. I understood the lyrics for the first time ever.

  • marcus75-av says:

Nah. No dig against Miley, but no one on this earth is Dolores O’Riordan and no one on this earth should take on a song that Dolores O’Riordan sang.

  • filthyzinester-av says:

    AMEN!

  • capnandy-av says:

“Zombie” is an interesting song for me because The Cranberries frigging suck, but somehow all the ways they sucked came together for that one song to make it perfect. My issues with covers of it by talented musicians, this one included, is that they never can get beyond sounding like pale shadows of the original, because if your voice isn’t a cracking primal wail, what’s the dang point?

  • cliffy73-disqus-av says:

I like the mature (ha) Cyrus sound a lot, although in both this and the Heart of Glass cover, she’s just doing a version of the original. And I don’t like covers that are just iterations off the original. Do something different! I can just listen to the album cut if I want to hear a version that sounds like that.

    • paulfields77-av says:

I think the band are copying the original, but I disagree on the vocal.  She stretches the vocal lines on Heart of Glass significantly (to be honest, in a way that ruins it for me).  Zombie is better, but there’s no way her voice is ever going to sound like O’Riordan’s, and that’s fine.

  • thecapn3000-av says:

Hard to believe shes only 12 years old

  • homerbert1-av says:

Sold cover. Cyrus’ voice is much better than I’d given her credit for. That said, this is the definitive version, by Aisling Bea and Sharon Horgan.

  • paulkinsey-av says:

“Zombie” is basically impossible to cover properly due to how unique O’Riordan’s voice was, but this is about as good as you’re going to get.Since we’re sharing Miley covers, I liked the cover of “Don’t Dream it’s Over” she did with Ariana Grande a few years ago.
