Queen Elizabeth II, the current representative of an institutional historical virus, recently gave an address about a different kind of deadly international disease. As a rare, non-Christmas television appearance, Liz 2's broadcast generated a lot of interest, especially from those who couldn’t help but look at the monarch wearing a simple green dress and imagine the possibilities inherent in her basically presenting a blank canvas for them to fuck around with.

The Queen’s green screen outfit has been a particular source of fascination for Peter Chiykowski, who’s been tweeting out a ton of variations on the dress. Chiykowski calls it “the perfect Photoshop bait” and has proven the truth of that statement by messing around with images from the address so it looks like Elizabeth II is wearing cool images of dogs in sunglasses, cosmic cats, and Iron Maiden tour merch.

Others have joined in, showing us a cooler version of the Queen who has the three-wolf moon t-shirt in her gilded closets along with Star Trek cosplay outfits and a few more bits of memorabilia from some of her favorite bands.

Twitter also shows us that the Queen likes to honor her predecessors and isn’t afraid to celebrate the rougher side of life through both still images and fancy, royal-exclusive GIF-enabled shirts.

This isn’t the first time Liz: The Sequel has provided enterprising image editors with a wonderful opportunity to practice their craft. Back in 2016, she wore a different green dress that allowed people to do similar stuff, covering her in emojis and outer space prints. Knowing that the internet can’t resist the urge to make the same joke when presented with a green dress, whether four years ago or now, in the midst of a pandemic, is actually a little heartening. The human spirit—the drive to post dumb shit—is indomitable.

I am kinda surprised no one photo-shopped a giant rack on her

There’s nothing magical about the color green that “allows” people to photoshop her clothing. Anyone with the skill could have ‘shopped those clothes onto her regardless of the color she was wearing. Green just happens to be the industry standard color because it doesn’t match natural skin tones, meaning there’s less risk of cutting off a piece of flesh. None of these edits of a still image are in any danger of doing that. That said, these are amusing.

Yeah, I clicked this link expecting that there was some sort of disaster where her outfit reacted strangely with the background in some way, but instead we got some bog standard photoshop jobs, which already take up 90% of internet content.

True. When I was in the Navy I used a white background for official portraits because the award ribbons on the uniforms often had a lot of green in them. I could manually cut out around the white caps, then just use the magic wand to remove the background. I could then lay that layer over a pre-made background with the U.S. and Navy flags. Maybe ten minutes of work. I could usually have hard copies on the boss’ desk in about a half-hour.

I’m no expert, but would it have been feasible to use a green background, and then select out green ribbons for chroma key replacement? Seems like that might have been easier than finding the edges of white caps against a white background.

I’m pretty quick, plus it was more than a decade ago so it’s not really a problem for me anymore.

When did it go from blue to green? When Avatar came out?

    We are not amused!

That one was good, but the Sex Pistols was the best.I think the queen would appreciate the joke. Remember, this is the same woman who saw Lady Gaga in a latex dress and didn’t bat an eye. In fact, she seemed quite pleased.

No one did a Morrissey/Smiths tour shirt? That would be amusing, given Morrissey’s history of petulant whining about the monarchy.

    Iron Maiden? Why not

I’m also surprised that I haven’t seen any mention of the song choice to end her address, We’ll Meet Again. That was the song at the end of Dr. Strangelove.
