Radiohead, Stevie Nicks, and The Cure among Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame's 2019 inductees

Aux Features Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

“I don’t care.” That was Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s thoughts last year when asked about the band’s potential induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Well, they’re determined to make you care, Jon-Boy, ‘cause Radiohead is one of the seven acts that will be inducted into the 2019 class. Joining them will be The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music, and The Zombies.

Today, Radiohead offered a sigh, a muttered “fine,” and some breezy cocktail words for their fellow inductees. “The band thanks the Hall of Fame voting body and extends congratulations to this year’s fellow inductees,” they said in a statement.

That voting body consisted of 1,000 artists, historians, and industry luminaries, though a fan vote was also considered. In order to be eligible, the act’s first recording must have been released at least 25 years ago. Among the nominees that didn’t make the cut were Devo, Kraftwerk, Rage Against the Machine, MC5, LL Cool J, and Todd Rundgren, among others. Express your fury accordingly.

Today’s announcement does, however, contain a bit of history. Following her 1998 induction with Fleetwood Mac, Nicks’ inclusion marks her as the first woman to be inducted on two separate occasions. “I have a lot to say about this, but I will save those words for later,” she said in a statement. “For now I will just say, I have been in a band since 1968. To be recognized for my solo work makes me take a deep breath and smile. It’s a glorious feeling.”

Jackson offered her own thoughts in a trim statement. “Thank you Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” she said. “I am truly honored and I am happy to be in there with my brothers.”

Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott spoke to Rolling Stone about the hair metal band’s inclusion, saying, “Now we can stop holding our breath. How wonderful to be in the same club as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and the Who and Queen … It’s a nice badge of honor.” Somebody pour some sugar on this man.

The Zombies, who were entering Susan Lucci levels of fruitless nominations, acknowledged the long wait that brought them here. “You do start to doubt that it could happen,” he told Rolling Stone. “I’ve tried to be fairly philosophical about it and tell myself that if we don’t get inducted, it’s just a bit of fun. Don’t take it too seriously. But of course when you’re actually inducted, everything changes. You think, ‘This is a career-defining [and] life-defining moment.’”

Also, Roxy Music! The Cure! That’s neat!

The ceremony is set to unfold on March 29 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. An edited special will air on HBO in the spring.

I thought Judas Priest was pretty close a year or so ago and then they weren’t even up for a vote this year.  Damn shame.

“Where the hell is Warren Zevon: 2018 edition.”

Also, I’ve never been a huge fan, but Devo deserved to get in.

    • blood-and-chocolate-av says:

I came on here to say the same thing about Warren Zevon. People can criticize the HOF and its process, but at least it can bring renewed interest to these older acts. Zevon, of all artists, absolutely deserves that.

    • mightymiked-av says:

No Zevon, no Link Wray yet they have room for Hall and Fucking Oates.

  • miraelh-av says:

I know that being in the thing doesn’t matter because it’s just…. It still annoys me though that Radiohead didn’t get in during their first year of eligibility. Also the fact that any band I love has been around long enough for them to be eligible for the thing makes me feel old….

  • treatmentbound-av says:

Just who is this “he” from The Zombies talking to Rolling Stone?

  • leppo-av says:

Honestly, how are Todd Rundgren and Devo not in there already? There seems to be no process behind this thing at all, and it’s a shame because the idea is a good one, but it’s ridiculously mishandled.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

The process is the voting, so it kinda makes sense that Def Leppard and Bon Jovi get in the Hall of Fame pretty effortlessly compared to Devo.  If it weren’t for the eligibility requirement around the 25-year age of the first album, I’d bet huge stars like Ed Sheeran would easily get in, pushing out Devo, Roxy Music, etc.

  • godlen7-av says:

Slade and T.Rex were both featured in Def Leppard’s “Rocket” video and they both deserved to make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before Def Leppard.

  • rflewis30-av says:

Saying Def Leppard is in the same club as The Beatles or Stones because they’re all in the Rock HOF is like saying you’re in the same club because you’re all in the Rock section of Sam Goody back in the day.

  • mfdixon-av says:

I can’t wait for Lindsey Buckingham to present for Stevie Nicks’ induction. Must see TV!

  • dbwindhorst-av says:

Coincidentally, I just learned there is a band named Republican Hair. After watching one
of their videos, my utterly subjective opinion is that they aren’t
anywhere nearly as interesting as DEVO, who did the whole plastic
pompadour thing nearly 40 years ago.

DEVO suffered from the marketing implications of having been dead right about the coming of Reaganism.

    • theodorexxfrostxxmca-av says:

Yeah they need Iron Maiden and Ozzy as solo artist, among others.

      • fedexpope-av says:

        And Judas Priest.

        • jameshetfieldofdreams-av says:

Priest not being in there is beyond ridiculous – as is Maiden. Other obvious choices are Megadeth, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy and Slayer.

          • bcfred-av says:

All three original members of Motorhead are now dead, so that would make for a pretty boring performance.

          • jameshetfieldofdreams-av says:

YEAHHHHH, STOOONE DEAD FOREVAH!!! NOOOO!!! Plenty of dead inductees in there now, NBD, have some metal all-stars do a quick set.

          • doom32x-av says:

Shit. What about Soundgarden and Alice in Chains? If Nirvana can get in for their output of essentially one mega album and one unplugged performance (yes I know In Utero and Bleach exist, nobody remembers them) then Soundgarden being one of the early Seattle bands along with two flawless albums can too. Pearl Jam can suck an egg until Soundgarden gets in.

    • djhuk-av says:

Yeah, where’s Blue Cheer?  No Blue Cheer, no Sabbath.

    • mikosquiz-av says:

The problem here is that you’re taking the “Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame” seriously and probably also somehow imagine that quality or significance has some relation to getting in. It’s just who’s going to bring in the most nostalgia dollars and most likely to cough up the outrageous fees for getting to bring guests, etc, and that’s it.

  • velvetal-av says:

Objectively speaking, Def Leppard contributed nothing worthwhile to the history of rock music other than a song strippers love to strip to. So they belong in the Stripper Music Hall of Fame, not the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

  • grant8418-av says:

Damn, MC5 still left out in the cold 🙁

“Now we can stop holding our breath. How wonderful to be in the same club as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and the Who and Queen … It’s a nice badge of honor.”Just when I thought Harold Baines was the worst Hall of Fame inductee of the week…

  • throatwarbler--mangrove-av says:

Honestly, with how awful some of the nominees have been lately, this is pretty good. Roxy Music was long overdue. Love The Cure. Radiohead, Janet, Stevie, Zombies… all very deserving.Would have been nice if Devo or John Prine got the nod, but overall a good year. Maybe next year will be their year, along with the Hall’s REAL Susan Lucci, Chic, who has been nominated eleven times(!) to The Zombies’ four.

    • djhuk-av says:

I’ll have to agree, though I really think Janet Jackson’s career is more about Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, hugely influential and, in my view, more deserving.

      • arundelxvi-av says:

Counterpoint: Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis sat their fat asses in comfy chairs behind a producer’s desk and raked in money. Artists and performers like Janet has to break their asses dancing and singing in music videos and award shows and at the Super Bowl. They didn’t do shit beyond the tracks, and Janet worked her ass off for 35 years to become a great worldwide pop star on her own drive and volition. She deserves this dubious award, and Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis, they did great things but their clacky sound is tired and 80s, Janet hasn’t worked with them for years. No, these two fatasses at the studio desk didn’t make Janet a star, she did it herself. She deserves to be respected for that. Janet’s looking very queenly in her last video, but she deserves to be. She’s earned it.

  • asherdan-av says:

Gawdammit, I though of all of them Devo would whip it, whip it good.

  • mr-threepwood-av says:

I voted for the Cure. So I’m pretty happy. English goth former kids deserve it.

  • djhuk-av says:

Roxy Music is the real story here. No Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno, no Cure nor Radiohead. They were a band comparable to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and Bowie in countless ways and influences. They weren’t appreciated enough in the United States and maybe, now, music lovers here will finally Do The Strand …

  • dripad-av says:

Thank God Roxy and the Cure got in on their first tries. Kids really need to listen to more Roxy Music to show how inventive you can be while crafting an image. However, here is where I still have a beef with the RNR HOF based on the current nominees/winners:1) Kraftwerk: none of the hip hop acts would be here without the “beats” Kraftwerk introduced, and many electronic groups owed a big thanks to them. They should have gotten in.2) Devo: like Roxy Music, they took an art concept and put a multimedia spin on it. Like Roxy, they may have not had an outward influence, but this electro-art-punk concept rang through the 80s. And they were from Akron. Again, a must.3) Todd Rundgren: The godfather of power pop, not to mention his contributions to production and interactive media in music. Should have been a shoo-in.4) Stevie Nicks: Really? I will understand being inducted for Fleetwood Mac, but apart from that, what has she introduced new to rock other than the “gypsy” image (which I still don’t see as having any influenced anyone) and goatish brays? Bjork has more originality and uniqueness in her pinkie and should have been nominated/won eons ago!5) Janet Jackson: Toss up for me. On one hand, she is more pop than rock. But she did bring some elements in that you could say would rock you out. I still would have waited another year.6) Def Leppard: I enjoy Def Lepppard as much as most kids from the 80s, but seeing the list above, I think they could have waited another year. But of course, they inducted Bon Jovi they year before (????) so…7) LL Cool J: No. Just no. Proof:8) Why the limitations in space, Jann Wiener? Hoarding too much memorabilia in Cleveland? And why don’t you induct them in Cleveland since you put the “museum” there?

    • soverybored-av says:

Speaking of Kraftwerk Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy would not sound like it does if it wasn’t for the band. Also alot 80s New Wave would not exist.

    • mikosquiz-av says:

Kraftwerk are less relevant to the RRHoF than Janet Jackson is, if somehow possible. But they should have changed the name to just Popular Music Hall of Fame years ago anyway, and when they do Kraftwerk will definitely belong.Although I’d hope they have too much class to accept their inclusion. The whole operation is just a sleazy and completely pointless money-spinner and I certainly think less of anyone who’s willing to play along.

  • gritsandcoffee-av says:

Meanwhile, Roxy Music and The Cure are the only two real bands in that group. Carry on though, bad taste.

It would be really funny if the longest speech of the evening was by Michael Dempsey (Bassist: The Cure — 1978-9, Roxy Music — 1982 and then only in the “Avalon” video).
