The nominees for the 2022 Annie Awards have been announced and there’s already a clear frontrunner: Disney’s first Southeast Asian action-adventure Raya And The Last Dragon. The film, which features Kelly Marie Tran in the lead voice-acting role, racked up 10 nominations, including Best Feature and Best Voice Acting.

Disney’s Encanto, which features Stephanie Beatriz and music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, scored nine nominations. Pixar’s Luca and Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s The Mitchells Vs. The Machine each scored eight nominations.

On the TV side, Arcane leads the pack with nine nominations, including Best TV/Media – General Audience. Netflix’s Maya And The Three scored seven nominations, while Love, Death + Robots scored five.

The 49th annual Annie Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 26, 2022 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Frank Gladstone, the executive producer of the awards, says they are planning for “an in-person event with all the trimmings.”

Animator Rant: I always thought the big studios influence on this award show was exaggerated or at best a half truth, but nominating ‘Disney Wonderful Worlds’ for best Video Game animation is a disgrace. That is a cookie cutter match three game that only has character animation during dialogue and they are barely moving. Can’t believe that bullshit got nominated.

maybe it is a category with a very narrow definition? “hey, this film festival has a category for best german-speaking lemur…wanna get nominated?” “…ja.”

      • mortyball-av says:

To be fair it is a limited category in the sense that studios/animators have to submit stuff to the animation guild to be considered (and pay $150 for the year membership). So the best animated game in history wouldn’t get nominated unless someone submitted it for the category. The film and tv studios submit everything they can cause they’re a big part of the guild but game studios don’t care about an award show for a specific subset of the art team.  Still mind boggling that someone from Psychonauts 2, Deathloop, Metroid: Dread wouldn’t submit something, or else any of those is an easy choice over a bum ass match 3 game.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an animated movie that was as aggressively average as Raya and the Last Dragon.

What are the Annie Awards? Am I missing the explanation in the text?
