Sydney Sweeney’s star is currently going super nova. After landing on three of HBO’s biggest and buzziest shows of the last five years and a role in the most-anticipated Marvel movie to date, Madame Web, Sweeney has been picking up real-world Ws across the board. She even did that whole hiding in a tub meme, and, according to Twitter, she bravely brought back the low-rise skirt, the two marks of success in this dog-eat-dog world. So it only seems fitting that she would play Reality Winner, the embattled and convicted whistleblower currently serving a five-year sentence.

Winner’s story isn’t nearly as fun as her name. In 2017, Winner, then an American intelligence specialist, leaked information regarding Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Later that year, she was arrested for suspicion of stealing a classified NSA document about Russia’s meddling and offering it to the news site The Intercept, which published the report. An audit of Winner’s desk computer revealed that she had been in contact with the outlet.

She was formally charged “with removing classified material from a government facility and mailing it to a news outlet and pled guilty to the charge, receiving the longest sentence ever given for leaking information to the press. Clearly, the United States government wasn’t too keen on its citizens knowing that Russia threw the whole election into upheaval via a phishing scam. Can you really blame them? This entire thing was very embarrassing for the government and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair John Podesta.

Anyway, now Sweeney’s going to play her, leaving behind her days as a disaffected and at-risk teen in Sharp Objects, White Lotus, and Euphoria.

Inspired by her play Is This A Room, Obie-winner Tina Satter will co-write and direct. On stage, Is This A Room uses the 65-minute transcript of the FBI’s interrogation of Winner as the basis for the script, using pink lighting cues to indicate redactions from the transcript.

Can we get Paul Giamatti to play Glenn Greenwald?

    • rar-av says:

I was about to comment that he’s too old, but he’s actually exactly three months younger than Glem.

      • socratessaovicente-av says:

Yeah, but considering Greenwald’s relevance to the story would’ve been 5 years ago, that’d make Giamatti 5 years too old. And Greenwald’s…..well preserved, I guess?

        • rar-av says:

I mean, if you never stress in the slightest about how anything you do affects the world around you, it’s not hard to stay youthful.

      • redwolfmo-av says:

Glenn posts on other sites in the AVClub family, like Gizmodo.  still blows my mind when i see it

    • daddddd-av says:

whoever plays him, you know he’s going to tweet 2,000 times Not Mad And Actually Laughing about it.

I didn’t get far. You lost me at this one:“and a role in the most-anticipated Marvel movie to date, Madame Web…”

  • milligna000-av says:

Not exactly a cinematic story. I guess that part where she brags how nothing will happen because she’s cute and white would work really well if you want the audience to fucking despise her.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

    1. Her name is “Reality Winner”?
    2. Is Tommy Wiseau involved?

    • harrydeanlearner-av says:

      Oh Hai Winner

    • fugit-av says:

It bugs me when the weirdest part of an article is not commented upon by its author.

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Or any of the news articles at the time. I remember reading that there was this whistleblower named Reality Winner and was annoyed that no journalists seemed to go into the question of what terrible parents would name their kid that.

    • planehugger1-av says:

You have to revolt against your parents’ values pretty hard to be named “Reality Winner” and go work for the NSA.

  • ohnoray-av says:

it’s wild she had a difficult time landing roles because she didn’t have the right Hollywood look. I don’t know how a casting agent could not think movie star when you see her.

    • elrond-hubbard-elven-scientologist-av says:

Hollywood is full of attractive blondes.  You need more than that to be a movie star.

      • ohnoray-av says:

I mean that’s exactly what I mean, she looks like lots of other attractive blondes but agents were telling her she wasn’t attractive enough.

        • schmowtown-av says:

Most people, but perhaps agents more than anyone else on earth, don’t have a clue what they’re talking about

        • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

          Must be some jaded-ass agents.

        • curiousorange-av says:

I’ve seen claims that she’s not the currently desirable body type as she ‘has no ass’. But I don’t know, skinny blondes with sizable breasts seems like something immune to trends.

          • harrydeanlearner-av says:

As an old, I don’t get the whole “big ass” thing but to each their own. She seems like an attractive young lady with some genuine acting chops.

          • drkschtz-av says:

Okay we’re getting really thirsty now, but… Sweeney has mounds of ass. 2020s ass.

          • nilus-av says:

I think its less about being attractive and more about being unique. Hollywood is full of Beautiful people, the world in general has a lot of them honestly. Just go walk around a public place for a few hours and I think you see a good deal of attractive people and at least a couple “movie star” level hot. It takes more to be a successful actor in Hollywood. That being said, from what I have seen she is a good at her job so I think its just a matter of getting in front of the right people and getting the right roles to show her talent. At the end of the day 90% of making it in Hollywood comes down to luck. At least for people who do not have family already in the industry

      • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

        So is Rivendell.

      • klvt-av says:

        Name 12.

    • gildie-av says:

She’s only 24 and she’s been working steadily on multiple big-name series and movies at a time since at least 2017. Honestly, how much difficulty could she have really had? Even if you’re extremely talented and have the right look it takes time to get a career going.

    • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Blond and gets her titties out. Yeah, who’d want that in anything?

    • redwolfmo-av says:

right? She is built and knows how to please. It is sure enough to knock a strong man to his knees.

    • frasier-crane-av says:

It’s probably time for you to stop believing her publicist’s framing devices.

  • kim-porter-av says:

To balance people who come here to complain about headlines…nice job on this one.

  • hootiehoo2-av says:

She was great in White Lotus, she somehow was the 2nd most annoying person in a show full of dbags! Good for her, she for sure seems like the new it girl and has the look for it as well. Now I will laugh that Black Cat (if that’s who she is playing) will be in a Madame Web movie! Like good lord, why! F’n Sony!

  • drewskiusa-av says:

Sydney Sweeney is the new Amanda Seyfried because there’s ALWAYS someone younger.

  • catsliketomeow-av says:

I like her enough in Euphoria and White Lotus, but it’s kinda weird that not a lot of people are talking about her and her fiancé. They started dating when she was 19 and he was 34. And now they’re engaged. I don’t know, I’m aware that they were both consenting legal adults by then, but still, eww.

    • nia-c93-av says:

I mean I personally think it’s gross to date a 19yr old in your 30s but it really isn’t weird that no one is talking about it. Older dudes have been dating attractive younger women in Hollywood since before the talkies. They’re consenting adults and there’s really not much else to say about it. It’ll either work out for them or they’ll join the legions of failed Hollywood large age gap relationships. It’s really both none of our business and the least interesting thing about her.

    • nia-c93-av says:

Not saying your take is wrong or terrible or anything. It’s just truly so common that it’s uninteresting even in a celebrity gossip sense imo.

      • catsliketomeow-av says:

Yeah, I get it. It just feels icky, but there’s technically nothing wrong with it. Oh well.

  • lazyacres-av says:

    >Reality Winner, the embattled and convicted whistleblower currently serving a five-year sentence.Um, you know she was released from prison almost a year ago, right? https://therecord.media/in-touch-with-reality-winner/
