Renée Zellweger says that, early on in her career, she was encouraged to consume alcohol by a film producer while on set.

In a cover story for Harper’s Bazaar, The Thing About Pam star explains that the incident occurred before she was expected to film nudes scenes. “There have been times I have been in, you know, on set, where a producer’s ready for me to go ahead and take my clothes off: ‘Here, drink this wine, ’cause then you’ll do it,’” Zellweger says. “And, you know, I’m not gonna take that wine, but I would like a phone. ’Cause I have a phone call I need to make right now.”

Though no specifics were given about the film producer or the production, Zellweger has previously spoken out about her hesitance to film nude scenes.

In 2001, the Oscar-winning actress told Premiere that she objected to filming a topless scene in the 1996 rom-com Jerry Maguire. Zellweger said that director Cameron Crowe’s intention wasn’t for the scene to be a “sleazy, gratuitous boob shot,” However, her push back against the nudity was heard by Crowe, and the scene was cut from the script.

She added, “When a woman stands naked in a room, unless that particular moment is held up by the subject matter, all you notice is that there’s a naked girl.”

A few years later for Ed Harris’ 2008 western Appaloosa, Zellweger revealed to The Boston Herald that she wasn’t fully nude in a river bathing scene. The actress wore those “little nudie things” during the scene, and she was initially worried about the shot. However, she says Harris “assured [her] that it was such a great distance you wouldn’t even be able to see that [she had] stuff on.”

“I look naked so we got the job done without doing it and that makes me happy,” continued Zellweger.

She couldn’t figure that out for herself?

    The cheapest special effect.

The Thing About Pam star —> the Thing About Pam starnudes scenes —> nude scenesher push back —> her pushback

    • captain-splendid-av says:

Shouldn’t the first one be the The Thing About Pam star?

      • volunteerproofreader-av says:

That’s an option, but you can also just leave off the “the”. It only looks a bit weird because this title’s a little long. If you were talking about Leo, you’d definitely prefer to write “the Revenant star” than “the The Revenant star”

        • captain-splendid-av says:

So it’s not really an error then?

          • volunteerproofreader-av says:

“The Thing About Pam star” is unequivocally wrong

          • captain-splendid-av says:

I’m confused now.  I thought you said this was an option?

          • volunteerproofreader-av says:

The correct options are:the Thing About Pam starthe The Thing About Pam starThe sentence needs to have a regular “the” that isn’t part of the title.

‘The sentence needs to have a regular “the” that isn’t part of the title.’No it doesn’t. ‘The’ is perfectly comprehensible doing double duty as article and part of the title. This kind of grammar pedantry is how we got Trump

          • volunteerproofreader-av says:

It totally does. The title “the” doing double-duty like that is an abomination and completely incorrect

          • lostmyburneragain2-av says:

Why? What’s the rationale for it being incorrect, other than ‘them’s the rules’? It makes perfect sense without the awkward redundancy.

The star of The Thing About Pam?

“The star of The Thing About Pam” – there. Even better. And if anyone wants to say “But that’s an extra word!” fuck off, it’s the AV Club, and they’re scrapin’ to make word count at the best of times.

      this is such loser behavior.

  • bembrob-av says:

When I was young, healthy and drunk, I used to nude scenes all the time, weather anyone wanted me too or not so I think there is some merit to the wine method. Now, it’s a physical struggle just to get my clothes off so I don’t even bother anymore.

    • halgsuth-av says:

I have to ask. Which of the three are you no longer, young, healthy, or drunk? Also, were all three conditions necessary?  ‘Cause im healthily drunk or maybe healthy for a drunk and if you can no longer change your clothes, it’s probably more sanitary to just go back to being naked all the time.

  • dirtside-av says:

In addition to intimacy coordinators, I think film sets should have someone whose job is, upon observing a person making a suggestion like “drink alcohol so you’ll be comfortable doing a nude scene,” to stab that person to death.

  • schmapdi-av says:

It sounds sleazy coming from a producer to a young actress – but I don’t think it’s bad advice. If anyone wanted me to be naked in a movie (THEY DON’T) – I would definitely need/want a drink or two before hand to calm my nerves and work up the courage to go through with it.

    • soylent-gr33n-av says:

I can’t remember if it was Denise Richards and Neve Campbell, or Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, who said they had a few margaritas to loosen them up for their respective make-out scenes.

    • recognitions-av says:

You could not possibly be missing the point more

    • wildchoir-av says:

It absolutely is bad advice, and in direct violation of all sorts of industry/ethical standards. A film set is a work place even (especially!) when nudity is involved, maintaining that professional atmosphere is absolutely critical during sensitive scenes. It’s bad enough having to deal with drunk coworkers when it’s their own idea, but having a producer recommend it?? On set the producer is typically top of the food chain, more so than the director even. Straight up exploitation and harassment

    • mustachiodudeses-av says:

A person choosing to loosen up with a drink of their own volition is fine; a(n almost certainly) male producer trying to get an actress to drink so she’ll do things she isn’t comfortable doing otherwise is gross.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

In theatre school I remember our teachers talking about how each woman needed to make a very firm stance on whether or not they were comfortable filming nudity and that it was very important to stick to that.

  • russell0barth-av says:

    1) if the nudity actually moves the story along, then cool. otherwise, WHY are you putting it in the movie? Same with peens. WHY are we seeing this guy’s dick.
    2) nudity is no big deal. ever do theatre? lots of nudity backstage and sometimes people who you don’t even know are there while it happens
    3) Booze? dude, not cool.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I tried to get into The Thing about Pam and I was intrigued by Zellweger’s performance but I just can’t follow a show with a protagonist that unlikeable, especially considering it’s based on real events. It’s just to frustrating to watch.

I had a similar issue with The Tinder Swindler.

Apparently Charles Bukowski gave Faye Dunaway this advice on the set of Barfly when she filmed the bathtub scene, but in fairness that was probably Charles Bukowski’s advice to everyone, always
