Rick And Morty’s fans are about to enter the mad multiverse of the animated show once again, even if there isn’t yet clarity on whose voices will actually guide them along the way.

Adult Swim’s acclaimed animated series returns for its seventh season in October with 10 new episodes. The recently released trailer offers a hint at who’s replaced series co-creator and lead star Justin Roiland. Domestic violence charges were leveled against him earlier this year. The charges were later dropped, but Roiland’s other behavior at the network also came under scrutiny, and he faced sexual assault allegations earlier this month. In the midst of all of this, Adult Swim announced they severed ties with him, with a new voice actor joining the show as production on season seven continued.

Since then, there has been speculation on who will take over the roles of Rick and Morty Sanchez, the grandfather-grandson duo who spend time going on interdimensional misadventures while juggling domestic life with their family. There was speculation of AI replacing him, considering how long Adult Swim waited to reveal who the actor was. (In case you missed it, after dismissing him from Solar Opposites, Hulu replaced Roiland with British actor Dan Stevens earlier this year.)

During the San Diego Comic-Con panel in July, producer Steven Levy told the audience to expect “soundalikes,” explaining, “The characters are the same characters. No change.” Well, now you can watch and listen to the trailer to decide for yourself whether they really sound similar. For what it’s worth, Morty feels a little more familiar than Rick, at least based on the almost two-minute trailer. (Is it just me or does anyone else detect Andy Samberg’s voice in there?)

Anyway, we’re not going to find out who our new Rick and Morty really are until the October 15 premiere. It’s, apparently, a surprise. An insider source told The Hollywood Reporter, “We want the show to speak for itself. We believe in the strength of the season and our new voices and we want to preserve the viewing experience for fans.”

The Emmy-award-winning series’ synopsis for the new episodes states the possibilities are endless: “What’s up with Jerry? EVIL Summer?! And will they ever go back to high school?! Maybe not! But let’s find out! There’s probably less piss than last season. Rick and Morty, 100 years! Or at least until season 10!”

Co-created by Community’s Dan Harmon, the returning voice cast includes Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammar, and Sarah Chalke. Season seven arrives on October 15 at 11 p.m. Until then, enjoy the opening credits below.

And he made a crazy lasagna for the occasion?

  • samo1415-av says:

It would be funny if they just used AI for the voices.

  • frail12-av says:

In a way I assume this is more annoying to Roiland than just recasting them with celebrities or whatever, so I’m all for it.

  • usernamedmark-av says:

not into wrong-sounding Rick. Morty is *okay*

  • graymangames-av says:

Replacing Roiland had to be one of the easiest things ever from a technical standpoint. There was probably an army of impersonators ready to go. I’m just surprised they narrowed it down to one actor.

    • thepetemurray-darlingbasinauthorithy-av says:

They had to find one who bathed at least semi-regularly.

    • specialcharactersnotallowed-av says:

There is an army of impressionists. Ideally they chose someone with acting talent.Although having a different VA each episode would be quite the gimmick.

      • srgntpep-av says:

I’m honestly a little surprised Solar Opposites didn’t try that.  Where they landed is pretty funny in the way anything Solar Opposites is pretty funny, but now that you’ve brought up this idea it would have  been a lot funnier, and really fit the show.

That’s the trick. As a Muppet fan, I see comments about this type of thing all the time when characters are recast (“I can do a better Kermit!”). It’s one thing to be able to do the voice and say their catchphrase, it’s another to actually have to carry a scene with a performance as the character. So frustrating how few people understand that.

This makes me think at least one of the voice actors is distractingly famous. Like Barack Obama and Ringo Starr are Rick and Morty

  • jaymoehd-av says:

Yeah it’s Andy Samberg.  Great call.

  • insectsentiencehatesnewaccounts-av says:

Their voices are slightly less grating and annoying.

  • blackie2414-av says:

If I had a nickel for every time a big name company replaced a big name voice actor for a big name role and refused to reveal the replacement until the premier of the next project featuring that voice…I’d have two nickels from adultswim and Nintendo. It’s not much…but it’s weird it’s happened twice.

  • slappyswensonswansonsamsonite-av says:

I have friends who stopped watching over the constant belching. If anything, they may get more viewers out of the change.

  • ksmithksmith-av says:

    Sounds the same to me.

    • iambrett-av says:

It’s pretty close – if I didn’t know it was the replacements, I probably couldn’t tell the difference.  Rick’s voice is a bit deeper when he’s shouting, Morty’s a bit higher pitched in the last part of the trailer.

  • dreadpirateroberts-ayw-av says:

Yeah, Morty is pretty dead on. Rick is slightly less raspy/beltchy. But that is not a big deal and I am sure most would stop noticing after a bit if they really cared at all.

    • sensored-ship-av says:

Weirdly I’d say Rick sounds more similar but the performance is a more different, while Morty sounds more different but the performance is more similar.

  • iambrett-av says:

The funniest thing would be if it was just other actors on the show replacing them. Like Chris Parnell doing Rick, and either Sarah Chalke or Spencer Grammar doing Morty (it’s not uncommon for female voice actors to do younger boys’ voices in cartoons, and it would explain why the voice seemed a bit higher than Roiland’s Morty).

  • mavar-av says:

For the young ones who are curious about the song used in the trailer.

  • mavar-av says:

Most of the voice acting is spot on until the very end of the trailer when Rick and Morty are speaking aboard the spaceship. At that point there’s something off about both their voices.

  • elforman-av says:

Wow, who said Rich Little is washed up?

  • lmh325-av says:

Just came to say that Dan Stevens was a genius choice for Solar Opposites and that gives me plenty of faith that this will also be fine.

  • thelionelhutz-av says:

Not bad. We are really going to see how much of this came down to Roiland’s acting versus the writing. While despite everything, we have to give Roiland credit for the idea and how the characters were developed, I have a feeling the writers have been in control for a bit both based upon the plot lines (look at how often there are plots from a writer’s perspective, such as the Heist or Storylord Episodes) and what we have heard about Roiland’s self-destructive behavior . . . although that might explain a lot about Rick. I guess it is just a shame that Roiland doesn’t have god like powers and can switch realities when he needs to.

    • abradolphlincler81-av says:

Originally I thought Rick was essentially a stand-in for Harmon, but I think it’s clear now that he’s taken from Roiland and Harmon.

  • beethoven-the-dog-av says:

i’m absolutely here for a more-mellow Rick that isn’t voiced by a psycho predator

  • thelionelhutz-av says:

Since then, there has been speculation on who will take over the roles of Rick and Morty Sanchez Guess what, everybody. It’s me, the whiny guy you never want to hear from. It’s Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith. Come on, be the best Pop Culture site you can be and get basic cannon correct. My time to shine. Execute them.

    • srgntpep-av says:

Oh please, everyone on here will immediately recognize you as that law talking guy from the Simpsons.

    • crocodilegandhi-av says:

I wonder if they hired a Latino voice actor to portray Rick Sanchez? Or if his ethniciticy is brought up so rarely on the show, it doesn’t really matter? Either way, Rick and Morty apparently have two separate voice actors now, so it should be interesting to see whether that affects their dynamic at all.

    • davidwizard-av says:

Come on, be the best pedant you can be and spell “canon” correctly. 😉

  • srgntpep-av says:

A few random thoughts: 1) those voices are really good. Barely noticeable and somehow Rick is less annoying (not quite as haggard maybe? and less belching would be a welcome change).  Morty I’m not sure I could distinguish if I were hearing it without knowing it’s someone else.2) I’m not a huge fan of “Ace of Spades” but damn it fits the season 7 trailer and vibe of the show really well, so kudos to whoever made that choice.3) I can’t be the only person that watches the opening credits of this show and is sad that there won’t be an episode that each snippet is taken from.

    • abradolphlincler81-av says:

I dunno, I think part of the fun lies in trying to figure out which of the scenes in the opening will actually be in the show. For instance, I was certain that neither Morty being butter, nor Morty nailing that golf shot, would be in the show, and I was right. That said, I really want them to include the Cthulhu baby scene in the last season.Agreed 100% on the rest though.

  • sensored-ship-av says:

Rick sounds… less assholey. Like there’s a tinge of joy rather than hubris in his delivery. Wonder if that has anything to do with the actor or if that’s part of the story of the season.

  • ginnyweasley-av says:

Imagine how terrible of a human being you have to be to be fired from a toxic manboy culture show like this. You’d have to be a world-class scumbag. On top of him being an alleged abuser, sexual assaulter, and a groomer, he sounded like a nightmare to work with. One article said something like he’d show up whenever he wanted and then be a baby about actually working, sometimes only communicating via driving a RC car around the office. Its almost incredible this is a real person. Justin is like if every 4chan comment ever somehow willed itself into existence and personified itself into the body of a random nerdy-looking guy.

    • abradolphlincler81-av says:

I don’t think the show has ever been for “toxic manboys,” unless it’s for ones that have recognized their toxicity. When I see myself in Rick, it’s “ugh, I see the worst parts of myself in that right there.” From the very first episode I saw (I started watching between the second and third seasons), it was obvious to me that Rick was to be pitied, not lionized.

  • mrflute-av says:

I got a Community notification for this?

  • dapoot-av says:

Cant believe they would fire the creators over a lil hanky panky
