Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis, has died, per People. She was 54 years old.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” her mother Priscilla Presley shared in a statement to the outlet. “She was the most passionate strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

The only daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie was born on February 1, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father being the King of Rock ’n Roll, her childhood was a whirlwind. He and Priscilla divorced when she was four, and Lisa Marie moved with her mother to Los Angeles. She split her time between L.A. and Memphis until her father’s death in 1977.

Her father’s death was the beginning of a tumultuous adolescence. She dropped out of high school and began abusing drugs, winding up in Scientology’s Celebrity Center rehab facility when she was 17. While in rehab, she met her first husband, musician Danny Keough. The couple were married in 1988 and had two children, Riley and Benjamin, before divorcing in 1994.

20 days after her divorce, Lisa Marie and the late-Michael Jackson eloped in a 15-minute ceremony in Las Vegas. Their brief marriage was a tabloid fascination that they were more than happy to respond to. Presley and Jackson famously kissed on stage at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards after the king of pop declared, “nobody thought this would last.” By December 1995, the couple had split.

Lisa Marie would be married two more times, tying the knot with Nicolas Cage in 2002—though the couple was only together for 108 days—and Michael Lockwood in 2006. She remained with Lockwood until 2006.

Though Lisa Marie recorded her first music demo in 1992, she wouldn’t release an album until 2003's To Whom It May Concern. The album reached number five on the Billboard charts and was certified Gold, selling more than 500,000 copies. She released her final album, Storm & Grace, in 2012.

Just days before her death, Lisa Marie appeared at the Golden Globe Awards with her mother to watch Austin Butler snag a trophy for his portrayal of her dad. In July, she praised the film during a rare appearance on 20/20, saying, “It was such an emotional [experience]… Like Riley said, it just brings up such generational trauma in a good way.”

Our thoughts go out to all of Presley’s loved ones.

RIP Lisa. Could not have been easy being the daughter of Elvis.

    • ohnoray-av says:

truly, that quote of her coming to grasp the impact of the generational trauma her father left them with is at least hope that she was finding some sort of peace with it all in the past few years.

      • geralyn-av says:

Elvis was only 23 when he lost his mother (who he was very close to). She was only 46 when she died of a heart attack. Truly generational trauma going on. I hope Lisa’s surviving children are going to be okay with this. Her twins are only 14.

        • esopillar34-av says:

I mean, not just generational trauma, family history is a bitch. It’s one of the first questions we ask of our cardiac cath patients, right up there with smoking. It’s a huge predictor of heart disease.

          • cura-te-ipsum-av says:

Covid-19 damage is going to be another issue. My recent cardiac workup from 2 years ago pre-Covid was pristine (stress echo, CTCA).Now could be another question given it’s a vascular disease as well. I guess I’ll find out at my next appointment later this year.

          • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I find it weird people operate under the assumption that everyone had COVID-19. I was a frontline worker in Toronto the entire lockdown. I got all the vaccinations. I never had COVID-19. Not even a little bit. Not even during omicron. Did other people not get the vaccines? That’s pretty fucking stupid behaviour.

          • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I love smoking I’m so excited to continue smoking, thanks not-getting-covid19

          • bcfred2-av says:

Everyone I know is vaccinated and boosted, and all but a handful have had it at least once. But the current variant of the flu seems to be knocking people on their asses more than omicron.

          • skipskatte-av says:

You’re lucky, then. My whole extended family has gotten every vaccine and booster as soon as available, and we’ve all gotten Covid at one point or another.

          • bcfred2-av says:

Yeah from my observations families seem to be either heart disease / blood pressure families or cancer families. Good times.

          • geralyn-av says:

As a nurse and someone with a terrible generational cardiac history on both sides of my family, I’m hardly unaware of that. What I’m referring to is the emotional trauma that is passed down generations and the devastation it inflicts on families.

I totally forgot the Nic Cage thing.

    • gruesome-twosome-av says:

Looking back on that now, I feel bad for Lisa Marie on that one since Nic Cage had apparently had a longtime Elvis obsession, and the fleeting nature of that relationship seemed like he was only interested in her for the connection to her dad.

i totally forgot about the MJ marriage. egh, now that nekkid music video is stuck in my head.

    • PennypackerIII-av says:

I think she and Lockwood divorced sometime in the past few years. Editors schmeditors.

    • dutchmasterr-av says:

It appears they split in 2016. So typo.

Seems like it’s supposed to be 2016.

    • phonypope-av says:

Wikipedia (for whatever that’s worth) has their divorce in 2021. At this point we obviously can’t expect proofreaders, but how about *a* reader? Just one person to skim the article and notice anything blatantly wrong?

    • cariocalondoner-av says:

So, did the Lockwood marriage last longer than the Cage one? One of those years must be wrong.Thank you – that line had me scratching my head – had to go to Wikipedia for clarity. Turns out they got married in 2006, she filed for divorce in 2016 but the dicorce wasn’t finalised till 2021. And she has another two children from this marriage – a set of twins. The other info gleaned from Wikipedia was – unfortunate …Presley married for a fourth time on January 22, 2006, to Michael Lockwood, her guitarist, music producer and director.[74] Danny Keough served as best man at the couple’s wedding, held in Japan. In March 2008, Presley announced that she was pregnant, following speculation over her apparent weight gain.[75] Her husband was a first-time father.[76] On October 7, 2008, Presley gave birth to fraternal twin girls, Harper Vivienne Ann Lockwood and Finley Aaron Love Lockwood,[77] via Caesarean section at Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, California.[78] The twins weighed 5 pounds 2 ounces (2.3 kg) and 5 lb 15 ounces (2.7 kg), respectively.[79][80][81] In 2016, Presley filed for divorce from Lockwood after ten years of marriage.[82] In February 2017, Presley said that her daughters were taken into protective custody and she opposed Lockwood’s request for spousal support, claiming that she had found hundreds of images and videos of child pornography on his personal computer.[83] The divorce was finalized in 2021.[84]

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

ahhh I was waiting for it and then child pornography poked its head at the very end. That’s either true or a lie and if it’s a lie that showcases how messy this got. That’s sad. On the 4th marriage?

      • bcfred2-av says:

Her husband hid a child porn addiction for 10 years, to be discovered only at the time they were divorcing? I’m not sure I buy that.

    • skipskatte-av says:

Well, they did actually kiss. It was the most awkward kiss in the history of broadcast television, but they did, in fact, touch their lips together.

“20 days after her divorce, Lisa Marie and the late-Michael Jackson eloped in a 15-minute ceremony in Las Vegas.”A) The hyphen is unnecessary.B) This implies that Michael Jackson was dead at the time of their elopement.C) As Jackson died years ago, and, more importantly, everyone already knows he’s dead, there are very few contexts in which describing him as “the late Michael Jackson” is necessary.

    • cariocalondoner-av says:

      B) This implies that Michael Jackson was dead at the time of their elopement. This comment reminded me of Demi Moore’s joke at the roast of Bruce Willis: “Our marriage was kinda like The Sixth Sense – you were dead the whole time!”

    • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

Maybe he was late for the ceremony.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Michael is a common first name. Jackson is a common surname. I actually didn’t realize that this article meant the Michael Jackson. It was actually the word “late” that tipped me off. So screw you I guess some of us are stupid.

      • liebkartoffel-av says:

If “Michael Jackson” is such a common name why didn’t you just assume that he was another, non-famous Michael Jackson who is also dead? Besides, there are plenty of ways of indicating that he was *that* Michael Jackson, without appending a superfluous “late.”

      • crankymessiah-av says:

Yes, but writers arent supposed to cater to the dumbest and most uninformed 1% of readers when writing an article, so the fact that you somehow did not know this exceedingly common knowledge is irrelevant, and does not overrule their point.

      • decgeek-av says:

What about all the other dead Michael Jacksons?

      • electricsheep198-av says:

Michael Jackson is Michael Jackson. If anyone means some entirely different Michael Jackson, they would identify that non-famous person as specifically not being the famous one.  It would have said “Then she married oil industrialist Michael Jackson.”

      • kman3k-av says:

Dumbest comment of 2023, so far, congrats.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

“everyone already knows” your a jackass for assuming knowledge you possess is common knowledge. Hows the weather up there on your pedestool?

      • liebkartoffel-av says:

Yes, fool me for assuming that everyone knows that Michael Jackson, one of the most famous people in history, very famously died in 2009. He is so famously dead, in fact, that in your other comment you indicated that your knowledge of said death helped you identify which of the doubtless millions of potential “Michael Jacksons” Lisa Marie Presley could have possibly been married to.

      • crankymessiah-av says:

It is common knowledge, you absolute dipshit. You may be the only dumbass reading this article who didnt know. Calling someone conceited for acknowledging extremely common knowledge as common knowledge is…. really something.

      • crankymessiah-av says:

Ypure really dead set on letting everyone know just how much of a dumbass you are, huh?

      • secretagentman-av says:

        ‘you’re’.

    • mifrochi-av says:

What, you don’t remember Jackson’s early and late “Michael” periods. I, for one, know a late-Michael Jackson when I see one.

    • grantagonist-av says:

      A) The hyphen is unnecessary.Hyphenating a two-word adjective is appropriate (unless there is some number-related exception I don’t know about).

Presumably it’s fairly recent. She looks like a women in her 50s, many of whom would be happy to look like that in a photo. I agree it’s not a glamour shot and does not look at though it’s been digitally altered, but it’s not terrible.

Unfortunately, family medical history wasn’t on her side. She was at least the 3rd generation of Presleys to suffer from substance abuse plus cardiac arrest before reaching 55. Her grandmaother died at 46 from cardiac arrest, with liver disease caused by alcoholism contributing, her dad at 42 with cardiac arrest and prescription drug abuse contributing. Plus, there was apparently DNA analyis done on Elvis’s hair that found an indicator of gentic heart disease, hypertrophic cariomypathy. I feel for her daughters and mother. It’s only been 18 months since their brother/grandson took his own life.  And I imgine the stress of the grief Lisa Marie experienced with her son’s death probably didn’t help her health.
