Andrew Scott is reinforcing one of cinema’s oldest truisms in his new Netflix series, Ripley: never trust anyone when they say they’re an accountant. The All Of Us Strangers star is returning to his Sherlock-era criminal mastermind roots as Tom Ripley, a grifter who descends into a life of fraud, deception, and murder after he’s hired by a wealthy man to return his debaucherous son home from Italy.

If this setup sounds familiar, there’s a pretty good reason for that. Ripley is yet another adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s popular Tom Ripley novels, which also inspired 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon. And, if you haven’t seen that film and still feel a little bit of déjà vu, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn employs a similar conceit in its tale of a lower-class obsessive slowly worming his way into the lives and milieu of a wealthy family. The new, black-and-white, 1960s-set series seems far too classy for a “Murder On The Dancefloor”-esque victory scene, but there is a shot of Scott near a bathtub, so… anything is possible.

Ripley’s trailer sees Scott arrive at Dickie Greenleaf’s (Johnny Flynn) beautiful house, wherein he immediately starts impersonating the lifestyle and affect of the aristocrats around him. While the Sherlock alum has primarily been playing good, likable characters for a while now (we miss you, hot priest from Fleabag!), he’s still perfectly suited for the sinister, and it’s fun to see him flex those chops here.

All eight episodes of the series were written and directed by Steven Zaillian, co-creator of HBO’s The Night Of and writer of Schindler’s List, The Irishman, Moneyball, and more. The show also stars Dakota Fanning, Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, and John Malkovich.

Ripley premieres April 4 on Netflix.

    Too old.

    • captjackhaddock-av says:

yeah I feel like he would’ve been perfect if they were adapting one of the later novels, like with Dennis Hopper, but having him play opposite Dakota Fanning as peers seems like an odd choice

It looks gorgeous and I will watch it, but he is indeed too old for this role.

And I LOVE Andrew Scott. He was so good in All of US Strangers, but I fear his age is going to be distracting here.

My very first thought.  Damon was 27 when he filmed the movie.  Scott’s 20 years older than that.

And not the vibe either IMO. It’s a pet peeve of mine when people cast Dorian Grey, too, as someone who looks slimey. These guys should be the face of boyish innocence, not roguishly handsome.

  • stevennorwood-av says:

Ahem…Saltburn got its Ripley on, thank you.

  • bowie-walnuts-av says:

Didn’t Malkovich star in one of the Ripley movies?

    • valetofthedolls-av says:

      Yes – “Ripley’s Game”.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Yes — the 2002 version of Ripley’s Game. I assume his presence in the new one is a bit of an Easter egg. Pity they couldn’t have gotten Pepper or Damon to be a part to get other former Ripleys. Maybe even Delon, who is still alive, but maybe not acting these days as he is nearly 90.

Assuming this is shown in theatres, I advise anyone interested in this movie to watch it there. I chose to rent Talented Mr Ripley rather than seeing it in the theatre, and almost as soon as I put it on, my mom came home and insisted on watching it with me.
I don’t know why she insisted on watching it with me, as she did not know what it was about and she did not enjoy it.

    • nickham-av says:

      It’s a series.

    • bcfred2-av says:

I’m confident I can avoid your mom while watching this at home, so I think I’ll be okay.

      • underdog88-av says:

I was actually planning on watching this with Brianfowler713’s mom! It’s a bit tough to get a view of the TV, but I should be able to reposition myself on the tree branch outside the window.

      • keepemcomingleepglop-av says:

        That makes one of us.

    • jodyjm13-av says:

Yes, I definitely plan on watching all eight episodes of the series in the neighborhood movie theater.

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

In the 1930s and 1940s they basically had episodic shows called “serials” that you watched in movie theaters when new episodes came out.

        • jodyjm13-av says:

It’s been a while, though. If studios and/or theaters get desperate enough, I guess it’s possible they’ll try that tactic again; after all, The Chosen has been doing decent business at the box office.

      • brianfowler713-av says:

Hey, if it’s working for The Chosen…

  • evanwaters-av says:

So it’s not a biopic of the Believe It Or Not guy?

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

Or the space trucker working for Weyland-Yutani who had that weird story about alien eggs?

  • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

It sounds like this is just an adaptation of the first book again. Highsmith wrote a whole series. The first book has been filmed twice (1960 as “Purple Noon” with Alain Delon as Ripley and in 1999 with Matt Damon), the second book once (in 2005 with Barry Pepper), the third book twice (in 1977 as “The American Friend” with Dennis Hopper as Ripley and in 2002 with John Malkovich), but the fourth and fifth books in the series have never been filmed for some reason.

  • thepowell2099-av says:

FFS, Saltburn was a pale imitation of Ripley written with TikTok memes in mind. Ripley should be insulted by this comparison.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Was that a little glimpse of Bokime Woodbine near the start of the trailer? Now that man can fucking act.

    • bernardg-av says:

Yup. That’s him. After I haven’t see him in any medium for quite awhile. Suddenly he is now popping in Halo show as a regular, and now this. Are we gonna have a low key Bokeemnaissance?
