It’s been a few months since we heard from Sam Raimi about his optimistic hopes for the future of his Evil Dead series, so let’s check in with Sam Raimi to get some more optimistic hopes for his Evil Dead series! The last time this came up was October, when Raimi cryptically teased that “there’s more Evil Dead coming”—though he neglected to explain whether that means there would be a sequel to the remake, another follow-up like the Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV show, or another unrelated reboot. That was also the same thing he said a few months prior, though at least that time he acknowledged that he might not be able to bring back original star Bruce Campbell.

Now, Raimi is actually offering some concrete information, or at least more concrete than before. As reported by IGN, Raimi revealed in a Reddit AMA that a new Evil Dead movie is in the works with a mysterious unnamed filmmaker taking over as writer and director, but he still hopes to come back and make one himself someday with Campbell. Raimi said the new director is “young and male” (a nice change of pace for Hollywood), and he, Rob Tapert, and Campbell are on board as producers. We still don’t know if it’s a sequel to the remake or another reboot, but it’s at least implied that Campbell won’t be appearing as Ash. Still, as mentioned above, Raimi did note that he’d like to make another Evil Dead if he can convince Campbell to come out of Evil Dead retirement.

So, basically, we’re in pretty much the same spot we were in back in October, but at this rate we might know slightly more about the new Evil Dead by… March? April?

Please just let it be something new. I’m so tired of remakes.

Right.  And “new” doesn’t even necessarily need to mean “start over from scratch” — e.g. it’s already teed-up to do something with Dana DeLorenzo, just keep going.

I would love for them to have a spinoff with Ghost Beaters Kelly and Pablo, maybe Ash’s daughter Brandy, and maybe bring in Jane Levy from the rebooted movie too, what the hell

    No Bruce Campbell, no deal.

I’d be ok if he shows up in it, but they go with a new lead. He’s not going to be around forever plus he’s stated he doesn’t want to do all the necessary stuff any longer. I like the Evil Dead world and the series was fun, it’d be great if they could find the right person to head up a continuation.

I’m honestly fine with letting series rest for now.

For real. I love the Evil Dead, but part of that love is the movie itself and part is the period in the early 2000s when it was really exciting to see an “Ash with chainsaw” emoji on AIM. Like every subcultural thing from the 80s and 90s, it’s been bled very aggressively, and we would be better served by an original idea that was inspired by the Evil Dead rather than more Evil Dead.

If Bruce ends up as leader but the kids do more of the heavy lifting, that’s fine.

On one hand… this is a series that has proven shockingly good despite its humble and ad hoc roots. On the other hand though, most reboots/remakes suck. Still, given this series started as a nasty and super cheap horror flick done by total amateurs, was remade by said amateurs with their new found money and expertise as a hybrid horror comedy, pivoted to a surrealist action/comedy had a remake that was a good remake of the first movie (but I think missed the point that the added surrealist humor from evil dead 2 was what elevated the series) and then a delightfully wacky tv series. So I feel like this series has earned a level of at least cautious optimism for any new endeavors that many other remake/boot announcements dont get

Mia meets Pablo and Kelly and they go on a Winchester brother style journey across America hunting Deadites.

I see Raimi still hasn’t gotten any sleep.

  • bmglmc-av says:

The problem is, as a “comedy horror” series, it’s lost it’s stakes, there’s little fear for the protagonist… so it’s not really “horror” anymore. And what’s left, one cannot repeat ad nauseam.

So perhaps a reboot of tone.

We got that with ED’13.And it was good! I think that one’s due a sequel, if you ask me.

    • murrychang-av says:

Yeah that’s part of the problem, plus the series didn’t have enough ‘funny’ for my taste.Stan Against Evil was more my speed really.

  • rays2-av says:

I do wonder if talking about the next Evil Dead installment/spinoff/whatever is a defense mechanism against talking (or thinking) about Spider-Man 3. (Sorry Sam, but if you said “Action”, then Parker’s pelvic thrusts are still on your head.)
