Say what you will about The Goldfinch—and a lot of critics are—but at least it has Sarah Paulson and Luke Wilson in it. In the film, Wilson plays Theo’s alcoholic, gambling-addicted father who’s maybe around for the wrong reasons, while Paulson plays Xandra (“with an X”), a stripper turned bar manager with a passion for square-cut acrylic nails and Las Vegas sunbathing. In the interview above, The A.V. Club talks with Paulson and Wilson about harnessing their inner scumbags, as well as what their all-time favorite book-to-movie adaptations are.

Thinking Xandra is scum because of her square-cut acrylic nails is not the book’s take. Xandra isn’t scum, she’s tacky. It’s dubious judgment to think that’s worse. Larry is about to be tortured or killed or tortured, then killed by Mr. Silver (played by Peter Jacobson, which tells you how this character really is a total scumbag.) The man hits Theo because he’s in fear for his life. Still wrong, but truly unforgivable? Also, it’s not a coincidence Theo’s drug connection is a phony that leads him to Boris. Boris is unsure of his reception, so he pretended it was an accident.
