Apple TV+ is officially warming up for a second season of Schmigadoon! The offbeat musical comedy series, which stars Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael Key, wrapped up its first season last August.

Co-created by Ken Daurio and showrunner Cinco Paul, Schmigadoon! follows a pair of New York doctors—Melissa Gimble (Strong) and Josh Skinner (Key)—who embark on a backpacking trip to restore their relationship after a rough patch. Instead, they find themselves trapped in the town of Schmigadoon, a mysteriously cheery community set in the world of ‘40s and ‘50s musicals like Oklahoma! and (must it even be said?) Brigadoon.

Strong’s former Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels serves as an executive producer on the series alongside Andrew Singer, Robert Luketic and Micah Frank. Strong and Caroline Maroney have production credits as well.

During the first season of the series, Melissa and Josh discover they can only leave Schmigadoon if they find true love, whether with each other or someone else in the town. Ariana DeBose, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short and Aaron Tveit round out the cast as the various residents of Schmigadoon.

Two new faces will also join the cast next season: Tituss Burgess and Patrick Page. Character details for both the actors have yet to be revealed, but based on his star-making Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt role, Burgess feels like a natural choice for the musical world of Schmigadoon!

The second season has not received an official premiere date as of yet, but per Variety, will follow Josh and Melissa as they explore Schmicago, another musical town set in the world of ‘60s and ‘70s musicals. Hopes have officially been raised sky high for a Cecily Strong rendition of “All That Jazz.”

I LOVED Schmiggadoon and I love Titus, this is very exciting for me! Happy Friday!

Kristin Chenoweth isn’t coming back?I don’t remember anyone dousing her character with a cup of water.I see that Fred Armisen is also not listed among the returning cast.

Cecily Strong has not left SNL as far as I’m aware. So Lorne Michaels would be her current producer at SNL.

“Strong’s form Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels….”
Wait, which of them left SNL?

    • tedturneroverdrive-av says:

I assume the reason Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon left SNL but Cecily didn’t is because Lorne is her boss on Schmigadoon, too, and she didn’t want to piss him off.

    • socratessaovicente-av says:

…*formerThat’s the word in the article that threw me.

      • antsnmyeyes-av says:

        Isn’t she still on SNL?

        • unfromcool-av says:

Correct all! Cecily Strong has not made any announcement regarding her leaving SNL. So the statement “Former SNL boss Lorne Michaels” is just, well, wrong.

        • socratessaovicente-av says:

Yeah, I certainly thought so, but the article refers to Lorne Michaels as her former SNL boss, so I wondered if one of them left SNL and it didn’t trickle out yet?

It’s a bad site full of inaccuracies we’ve decided to read.

Will season 3 be Schmats! or Schmantom! or Schmaigon!?

  • bikebrh-av says:

How can you talk about this show and completely ignore Kristin Chenoweth’s involvement?

    • unfromcool-av says:

I had no idea she was involved. Thank you for bringing to my attention as I will definitely give this a shot now! I love her. She was so good on Trial & Error Season 2. Where the ever-living-hell can I stream that show?!?

    • sarcastro7-av says:

I enjoyed the first season quite a bit, but it was particularly funny to see them finally get to her big showstopping number and essentially see her say “okay, amateurs, here’s how you fucking do this.”

      • erakfishfishfish-av says:

They really made us wait for that song, but good god it was so worth it. All sung live and in a single, unbroken shot too.

  • refinedbean-av says:

This is surprising, honestly, but I’ll take it. Titus is awesome, so perfectly cast here.

  • sarcastro7-av says:

“will follow Josh and Melissa as they explore Schmicago”

Holy shit is that perfect and hilarious. I’m looking forward to season three:  “Miss Schmaigon” and season four “Schmamilton.”

This had one of the best returns for low-investment, high-enjoyment of any of the pandemic time shows for me & friends. Very glad to see it get a second shot. Had a nice side effect of Strong getting even more singing features on SNL too.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a bigger waste of talent than the first season of this show. The only redeeming moment was Jane Krakowski’s villain song.

  • icehippo73-av says:

This show started out really strong, but faded away rapidly as the season went on. Hope they can recapture the magic of the first few episodes. Thrilled to see Patrick Page, after he was so completely wasted in The Gilded Age

I’m pretty surprised by this. I only remember seeing pretty awful reviews of this show, and can’t recall a single person I know ever having mentioned watching it.

    • severaltrickpony-av says:

A lot of us wanted it to be better than it was. I don’t think it would have gotten any traction in a “normal” theater season when all those prominent actors were busy.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

apple seems to renew pretty much everything. third season of ‘see’, a show i’ve never heard anyone talk about ever, coming soon!

      • docprof-av says:

Yeah I guess they do still have to build out a library since they’re not a traditional media company and don’t have decades of shows and movies to throw on their streaming service.

  • JimBJohnson9-av says:

    This is great news!

  • mdiller64-av says:

This show was a real find – I feel like it slipped under the radar a bit, and my wife and I only heard about it after the first season was completed. We both enjoyed it quite a bit, and I’m looking forward to another season. I’m curious about the premise, though, because season one was all about escaping Schmigadoon and the two main characters accomplished that in the finale. Do they somehow end up back there or are the two cast additions going to be the two new main characters?
