See Helena Bonham Carter blow up a mailbox in the Suffragette trailer

This might sound crazy, but did you know there was a time when women weren’t afforded the same rights as men? It sounds too fanciful to be real, but it’s true. The new trailer for the upcoming film Suffragette takes a look at the turbulent period of time during the struggle for women’s enfranchisement in England, and just how brutal and appalling the whole thing was.

When the campaign, which had been repeatedly ignored by the powers that be, finally decided to get a little rowdy, the results were a horrific display of violence against people clamoring for their basic rights as well as an inspiring look at the risks taken by the women who led the fight. A cast of heavy hitters toplines the project, including Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, and Meryl Streep as outspoken outlaw Emmeline Pankhurst. Written by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) and directed by Sara Gavron (Brick Lane), the film comes out October 23, but you can watch Bonham Carter set off a pipe bomb in a mailbox over and over until then.
