The events of September 11, 2001 reverberated across every corner of the world. That included the film industry, which not only began pumping out darker, bleaker films in response to the times, but also began reconsidering what was appropriate in terms of entertainment. One of the films of the era affected most by the tragedy was Disney’s animated buddy comedy Lilo & Stitch. As Vox breaks down in a new video, the film initially included an extended sequence involving a crashing airplane, a big city, and lots and lots of tall buildings. By placing scenes from the unreleased cut alongside what audiences saw in theaters, you can see why the film needed a heavy makeover before release. It’s an interesting case in point of the sort of tonal shifts people scrambled to make in the months and years to follow.
