Enlightened: Season 1 - Trailer (HBO)

Find it on: Mike White’s first show for HBO, , starred Laura Dern (who made a not-so-secret cameo in The White Lotus as the voice of Dominic’s angry wife on the other end of a phone call) as Amy Jellicoe, an executive at a multinational corporation who reaches rock bottom due to her own self-sabotaging ways. She takes some time to regroup at a mental health facility in Hawaii and returns with a new outlook on life, but the same old blind spots still cause her to get in her own way. The idea of privileged white people seeking serenity while still embracing the trappings of luxury in a tropical setting is more of a piece with the first season of The White Lotus, but Amy’s inability to see herself clearly fits with pretty much every guest we met in season two. Having White Lotus withdrawals? Don’t worry! Aubrey Plaza is in tons of other things. Literally tons.

Oh you like Aubrey Plaza? Name 10 Aubrey Plazas.

Well, there’s Aubrey Plaza. That’s one, that’s easy. Then there’s
        2. Aubrey Plaza (the funny one)
        3. Aubrey Plaza (the hott one)
        4. Aubrey Plaza (the smart one)
        5. Aubrey Plaza (who didn’t do well in school but is a whiz at fixing transmissions and shit)
        6. Aubrey Plaza (the one who’s like the den mother or house bunny of all the others)
        7. Aubrey Plaza (the Witch Queen, most powerful servant of The Dark Lord)
        8. Aubrey Plaza with a perm
        9. Aubrey Plaza (who doesn’t wee-wee in the sandbox)
        10. Aubrey Plaza (who did wee-wee in the sandbox once, but we don’t give her a hard time about it because she’s cool)

Sutton sure traded down from Richard.

The Resort was a really entertaining show IMO – William Jackson Harper and Cristin Milloti (with Nick Offerman in a lesser role) alone made it worth watching. It’s written by the guy who wrote Palm Springs and has a pretty similar vibe. Can see The White Lotus comparison too but don’t know if it was really going for that.

My Brilliant Friend is incredible – I’ve rewatched the first season three times so far. There’s 3 seasons right now, and season 4 will be the last – it’s based on a series of excellent four novels.
You’ll fall in love at least one of the two protagonists.

Spin Me Round is an obvious choice, but to completely omit it from your list?? C’mon now

Enlightened is very good and should have had another last season (even a short one) to finish a few arcs. At least HBO stayed in the Mike White game.

I just watched the first season of White Lotus and I don’t get the hype. In general I have a pretty high tolerance for media where nothing happens, but…it didn’t really seem like a character study either? And all of the underlying issues about class seemed like Baby’s First Socioeconomic Satire. What am I missing?
