In a post-Oscar, post-being accused of abuse world, Brad Pitt’s latest thing appears to be wacky little comedy cameos. His latest unexpected appearance is on the season finale of FX’s Dave, created by and starring Dave Burd a.k.a. Lil Dicky. Apparently, Burd heard “through the grapevine” that Pitt was a fan of the series and wrote what The Hollywood Reporter describes as a “passionate, personal letter” asking him to be part of it. Lo and behold, the answer was yes—marking Pitt’s first comedy TV role since Friends.

“It was a little reckless to anchor an entire three episode arc with Rachel McAdams and an entire finale on Brad Pitt, but for the themes that we’re talking about there is no one better,” Burd tells THR. “What better representation of like hopeless romanticism and love is there than Rachel McAdams, who was like my generation’s dream woman and who has been in films that have totally defined my interpretation of what love is supposed to be? Same with Brad Pitt. What better person to teach you a lesson about fame and validation than like the star of all stars, Brad Pitt?”

“These are like the biggest stars of our time validating our show,” Burd adds, noting that the finale’s other big guest star, Drake, told him that Dave “is one of the more important shows of our generation.” Burd attributes the quality of the show to the team behind it: “Everyone who makes the show loves cinema and storytelling. We’re at the top of our craft when these people are joining in and being like what you guys are doing is worth our talent and our time. For Brad to be getting direction from me and trusting me like the way I know he trusts like [Quentin] Tarantino and the Coen brothers was incredibly rewarding and something that I’ll never forget.”

This is the world we’re living in now, where Lil Dicky can compare himself to the brothers Coen. Still, Brad Pitt is not the point of Dave. “I don’t think the show is about celebrities, but they are a part of entering the zeitgeist and climbing the ranks of the entertainment industry,” Burd explains to the outlet. “That’s, like, the DNA of the show, and so I’ll just say that the people who came to play at the end of this season are the holy grail of iconicism. It’s like, where do you go from here?”

Wow, how does he find the time when he has to hang out with all the people from Deadpool 2, as well as hanging out with everyone else he’s ever worked with, since the assumption seems to be that Brad Pitt appearing in Dave means they’re “hanging out”.

Item!  Big Dick hangs with Lil Dicky.

I’ve sorta avoided this show because it looks like the adventures of a C-list Jack Harlow and if that’s the case, I’d really rather he not succeed and get famous. However, I am quite fond of Rachel McAdams, so maybe I’ll just watch those three episodes?

I am surprised to be saying this honestly, but this show at its best is one of the most ambitious and intelligent shows on television. I don’t think you’ll regret giving it a chance.

You don’t have to be a fan of his before hand if that helps sway anything. I had heard 1-2 lil dicky songs before I started watching.

Lil Dicky pretty much watched Atlanta and said “Hey! I can and should do that too!”, so here we are. It’s nowhere near as good as Atlanta, but its decent and entertaining enough. Since we don’t get a lot of TV shows and movies 100% centered around a single rapper these days anymore, it’s noteworthy for that at least.

lol the wooden shirt should be a good intro. this is a good show. There are times where I think he bites off more than he can chew, and doesn’t do as well with it as Donald Glover does with Atlanta, but it’s not nearly as out there either. It’s a weird show with a very unlikeable main character (Dave is so full of himself, makes a lot of the wrong decisions, etc) who is ultimately endearing enough. Side actors/cast are very good as well.

its actually quite good, and I kinda felt the same before watching it, too. Give it a shot.

    • fireupabove-av says:

Alright, you all + Rachel have convinced me to give it a shot at least.

It’s funny you mention Harlow because he makes an appearance this season and their interactions address each person’s level of celebrity. It’ll surprise you how good it is if you let it.

    • ghboyette-av says:

He seems to be aware of that. An episode from a few weeks ago had Jack Harlow just roasting him for half an hour.

    • robgrizzly-av says:

Funnily, there’s an episode that addresses this, and Jack Harlow cameos. They have beef for exactly this reason. The show is low-key genius at this sort of stuff, lol.

From what I understood ( and this is based on stuff I read online, rumors and whatnot ) Pitt has always hang with a little dicky…..

First live action TV comedy role – while he a guest on Friends in 2001, he voiced Patch Boomhauer for King of the Hill in 2003.

Goddamnit Lil Dicky. The dude seems incredibly talented and quick-witted (and intelligent-in-some-ways for that matter) and yet he radiates the kind of unearned intellectual smarminess that is the providence of the majority of white in their early 20s upper middle class dipshits. Rubs me totally the wrong way.

    • ghboyette-av says:

I know exactly what you mean. I like his work and his writing, but goddamn is his character on Dave come across as so unlikable. It makes me think that he must be pretty cool to have that kind of self awareness.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Wait, you changed your name…to ‘Lil Dickey’?
Yeah, it used to be ‘Burd’!
    Oh, right! Good change!

  • iambrett-av says:

Not even remotely surprised. Burd is a huge starfucker, and seems to have a remarkable talent for connections when it comes to Hollywood.
That said, I’ve heard the show’s fine, or at least better than his music.

  • mckludge-av says:

Is Burd, like, a Valley girl? He says, “like,” like a whole bunch.

  • ghboyette-av says:

This was more than a cameo. Dude was in nearly every scene of the episode. I can’t believe he got him to do it.
