For many Internet mash-up artists, it’s simply enough if two song titles share a word to create a fusion of the two. And for many Internet mash-ups, this is a god awful premise for creating something good, interesting, or even tolerable. But sometimes the premise pays off and there’s actual synergy between the two songs. New York-based comedian Dan Chamberlain, as Chambaland, has mashed together Lisa Loeb’s “Stay” with Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and the result is an incredibly plaintive, if conflicted, song about the pros and cons of staying. It’s a bit jarring to hear this well ingrained music from the ’90s used with different lyrics, and points are certainly deducted for not working in the “No, No, No, Bad!” part of Loeb’s song that so many have belted out in their cars. But it’s still a surprisingly competent combination that works as a meditation on a relationship clearly fraught with arguments over who should or should not stay. It’s almost like a call and response song across decades between two of the mopiest people around.
