Last week, we hypothesized that with the wave of shifting theatrical release dates that Sony might also delay the release date of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. However, keeping us on our toes, Sony has decided to effectively undo its previous shift and will now release the sequel two weeks earlier—on October 1.
In August, Sony pushed the Tom Hardy-led film three weeks back, moving the date from September 24 to October 15 due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in connection with the Delta variant. As Paramount now pushes all of its blockbuster releases into next year, Sony decided that it will be different and speed up Let There Be Carnage’s arrival to theaters.
The shift could have something to do with the recent success of a fellow Marvel superhero film. Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, opened strongly with $90 million coming in over the three-day weekend. Shang-Chi now stands second, behind Marvel’s Black Widow, as the biggest box office opening of the year. It seems like Let There Be Carnage refuses to be outdone by its MCU counterparts, and wants to break box office records just like its 2018 predecessor. However, with the predictability of box office success all over the place this year, there’s no telling if this will work in Sony’s favor.
Andy Serkis’ sequel stars Tom Hardy returning as Eddie Brock/Venom with Woody Harrelson playing serial killer Cletus Kasady (a.k.a. Carnage). The film features Naomie Harris as Shriek, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, and Stephen Graham as Detective Mulligan. Veep’s Reid Scott also appears in Let There Be Carnage as Dr. Dan Lewis. Just so everything’s clear, Venom: Let There Be Carnage will now hit theaters October 1.

Outside Dune this is pretty much the only film this year that I actually want to go and see. Never got the poor reaction to the first with critics lambasting the “inconsistent tone” when that was the point of the film (going from dull to almost like a farcical sickness to confused fighting for control before finally coming to terms with the situation) as it was just a fun dumb movie in a good way that really leant into the cheesiness of two entities sharing a body.
i mean i enjoyed watching it but if my job was to criticize it i wouldn’t have a difficult time pointing out a million things wrong with it.
Sure but criticising the “inconsistent tone” is like criticising a war film for having violence.
Have you seen Leigh Wahnell’s “Upgrade”? I watched Venom specifically because people said it was like Upgrade, but not quite as good.
I respectfully disagree.Upgrade was *much* better than Venom.
Upgrade was absolutely the better “more powerful hitchhiker on your central nervous system” movie, no question.
and Sting!
Yep. Agreed. First flick was a friggin’ party.
I was gonna make a smart-ass “The sequel no one asked for” type of post, but then I saw this. So you’re that guy that wants this!
Most movies aren’t asked for.
Venom was dumb fun. Its not a good film by any stretch but it was fun to watch. Which is really all you need. The thing is that its not a movie that was made in a way that made me confident about a sequel. This could turn out fun but it could also be really bad
Critics lambasted it because it was a downright horrible movie.
I’m always delighted by people saying “critics thought this movie was dumb, but I thought it was dumb and fun!” When that Paw Patrol movie came out the other week there were multiple people commenting that the movie existed to amuse children and shouldn’t be reviewed (ditto the Fear Street movies on Netflix, where those comments were roughly half of all discussion on the reviews). People have this desire for their tastes to be externally validated, and it can produce some funny hair splitting.
Apparently this is Tom Hardy’s personal masterpiece too cuz he straight up has a story/writing credit on the sequel which if anything kicks up my anticipation. And Woody Harrleson as Carnage could be a kick, guy is rarely bad in anything. At least they took off that damn clown wig he had in the mid-credits stinger in the first one.
So how much Carnage are we looking at here? Full Carnage? Half Carnage? Somewhere in between. If you’re going to say “Let There Be Carnage,” I think I’m entitled to get a ballpark figure at least.
I have a similar problem as I never know how much Ruckus to bring.
Oops, don’t want to stir up trouble.
Fuck that game was fun.The comic it’s based on isn’t as good.
That game was fucking awesome. Loved when you thought you passed it (I knew it wasn’t over as I read the comic) they hit you with the real ending. My older brother kept telling me I think it’s over and I got up relaxed a bit and told him no, they are gonna throw the real ending at me. Was always fun to play games with people in the room with you.
It’s true. Like “let slip the dogs of war”. What kind of dog, and how many?Do you think they’re Corgis? I’d be down for the Corgis of war.
a Detective
“as Detective”
Maybe there is more than one Detective Mulligan. Maybe Stephen Graham is playing a Detective Mulligan but there was another acting playing Detective Mulligan first but they decided they needed to have another go.
I saw Venom for the first time over the weekend, and I feel like critics were overly harsh on it. We approached it as a “shut your brain off” movie and had a lot of fun as a result.
