While not as exciting (at least to this writer) as the news that Babu Frik is back, fans at Star Wars Celebration Weekend got a glimpse of all the Rebels that would be joining Rosario Dawson on Ahsoka. Today’s Mandalorian panel featured the cast and crew of Disney+’s growing universe, including Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosario Dawson, Carl Weathers, Temuera Morrison, and many more. They didn’t come empty-handed either. Filoni treated fans to a very early teaser trailer of Ahsoka, the much-anticipated TV series that started shooting three weeks ago. That’s some fast turnaround.

But the loudest reactions were saved for the characters from Star Wars’ TV past. Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren from the Star Wars Rebels animated series appear in the Ahsoka footage. Furthermore, the last shot of the teaser also focused on a mural of other fan-favorite Ezra Bridger. However, a live-action version of Ezra has yet to surface.

Back on stage, they introduced the once and future Sabine, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, the actor who voiced the character on Star Wars Rebels and will play the character on Ahsoka. Bordizzo was joined by the chattering droid Chopper, also from Rebels, in all its three-dimensional glory.

“I feel like I’ve just been adopted into a new family,” Bordizzo said of joining the series. “I feel that way about everyone I work with but also the fans. I never experienced anything like this. I know how much Sabine means to many people in this room, and I know how much she means to Dave and I think you guys are going to be really excited about the journey she’s about to have.“

Filoni, who was doing his best to keep the sprawling table of guests from spoiling the two massive tentpoles series, talked about the excitement of seeing his creations make the jump from animation to live-action television. “If you write a story, then all of a sudden you’re looking through a camera and you see this environment and there they are, there’s the character,” he said. “I think we’ve been so fortunate with everyone we’ve asked, this entire table of people to come and be these characters.”

Ahsoka is expected to start streaming on Disney+ next year.

Can’t wait for the outrage about everyone’s favorite droid to hate making the jump to live action. Me, I’m just wondering if they’ll somehow work in Zeb and Kallus.

Chopper already has a live action appearance since he’s in Rogue One.

People hate Chopper? I love him lol

Back when Star Wars: Rebels was running, Kevin Johnson was writing episode reviews for this site, and he hated Chopper; the comments, at least those who mentioned the topic, tended to agree with him. And, admittedly, he is an output port, but that’s what I enjoyed about him. Usually; I will say he went too far in “The Forgotten Droid” when he abandoned his post to buy a replacement leg.

That was a character arc for him, though. He started the episode being so selfish he almost got the team killed, and ended it with a generous act to save his new friend. It’s a show for seven year olds. Adults can also enjoy the characters and plots, but the target audience is in second grade.

    So wait, who’s playing Hera?

    • lhosc-av says:

      Nic Cage.

    • chronium-av says:

Considering she’s in the teaser and they didn’t announce who’s playing the part is just weird.

      • dp4m-av says:

She’s in from behind — but please believe me when I say that them not announcing LA casting for Hera (despite filming at least a pick-up shot), and presumably Ezra and Thrawn have set the Celebration rumor mills on fire…But you really could not tell who that was in the video at all.

        • chronium-av says:

Hera has a one of a kind look in Star Wars. Her outfit is unique and she has a unique shade of green for twi’lek’s. Them not talking about Thrawn or Ezra at least makes sense. They’re not going to acknowledge them until they show up on screen because they’re big moments. Hera and Sabine are going to be big cast members so it would be to difficult to hide them in the marketing.

          • dp4m-av says:

Oh, sorry, it was definitely Hera…  I just meant you couldn’t at all tell who the actress was (even if just a pickup shot)…

      • erictan04-av says:

Guess a big reveal will let us know which famous actor is playing her.

    • harpo87-av says:

I recall a report that Mary Elizabeth Winstead was joining the show in an undisclosed role. She’d be a bit younger than I’d imagine for the part, but especially with enough makeup to turn her into a twi’ilek, it’s certainly not impossible, so she’d be my first guess.

A little while ago there’s had been rumors of Lucy lawless being eyed for a Star Wars role. Fingers crossed?

  • hiemoth-av says:

Just to confirm, if Ezra Bridger was going to be on that show, wouldn’t it also mean that Thrawn would also most likely be a part of it? Question partially because I was recently thinking on how weird it is we haven’t seen any live action take on that character yet, even with acknowledgment on what happened to him in the animated show.

    • bembrob-av says:

Considering that finding Thrawn was Ahsoka’s primary mission when she crossed paths with the Mandalorian in season 2, although she seemed to take a detour to hang out with an old friend in Book of Boba Fett, it would seem likely that we’ll see Thrawn at some point.

    • panterarosso-av says:

there were rumours of actors being looked at for that role before so i think so

  • westsiiiiide-av says:

Ezra is definitely not a fan favorite – the character is pretty universally loathed (and rightfully so). In a franchise that gave us Jar Jar Binks, he’s pretty high up on the list of incredibly annoying characters.

  • redeyedjedi410-av says:

Still severely disappointed that they didn’t get Tiya Sicar to play Sabine.

  • srcrownson-av says:

Can we please get a Freddie Prince Jr Kanan flashback at least?

  • thejewosh-av says:

Okay, but if she’s not playing Sabine, who the fuck is Katy O’Brian playing?!?!

  • djburnoutb-av says:

Ahsoka… Andor… Obi-Wan… Knights of the republic or whatever… the new one with Jude Law… we’re getting into “Stephen King: A through Aardvark” territory here people
