Well, it’s here: The moment Nintendo fans have been nervously awaiting since Chris Pratt was first announced as the voice of Mario in Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie a little over a year ago. Nintendo and Illumination have just released the first trailer for the movie, giving us all a chance to not only hear Pratt’s Mario but to see what the studio behind the Minions movies can do with the mushroom kingdom. We know they have experience with cute/funny little guys, and everybody in the Mario universe is a cute/funny little guy to some extent, but is the movie going to be a “wahoo!” or an “ohhh noooo”?

That’s an intensely personal decision that everyone will have to come to on their own, much like when the first trailer for the Sonic The Hedgehog movie came out (though most people landed on the “too many teeth” side of that debate, prompting a massive and costly redo on the finished footage). Still, the team behind the movie have been consistently promising that Pratt’s Mario voice would not only be good, but that everyone would stop questioning the decision to cast him once they hear what he’s doing, so they’ve been confident for a long time that it won’t be as bad as Sonic’s teeth.

We’ll see about that, and we’re sure that everyone on social media will loudly tell everybody how they feel about it. You can see the trailer for yourself below at the end of this video.

Honestly? A pretty good voice and I’m SHOCKED that Jack Black is actually modulating his voice from the norm. That said, I still hope they alter the face a bit, too much Pratt for my liking

  • marshalgrover-av says:

    I don’t hate it.

  • null000000000-av says:

I am so taken aback that this looks shockingly competent and entertaining. Not in love with Pratt, but the animation and style looks really good honestly.

  • sven-t-sexgore-av says:

    Looks: Gorgeous
Seems: FunPratt: …is Pratt… I can probably still enjoy it but he does not read as Mario at all.

    • richardalinnii-av says:

Sounds like he is playing Mario’s voice the exact same way he did Emmet Brickowski in The Lego Movie.

      • ageeighty-av says:

Listen again, especially to the last line, and he’s definitely doing some kind of vaguely New York accent. It reminds me a little of Bradley Cooper doing Rocket Raccoon.

        • ahildy9815-av says:

I think that last line is Toad. “Mushroom Kingdom here we come”?

          • ageeighty-av says:

No, that’s Mario. Toad’s voice is higher-pitched in the preceding lines, and doesn’t have even a trace of the accent that’s in that line.

There’s a bit of Brooklyn in “What is dis place?” as well.I mean, maybe it’s simply because I’m not especially wedded to Mario, but… eh. He sounds fine.

        • mythicfox-av says:

Yeah, that’s the exact same thought I had. I’m not buying Chris’ voice as Mario as it is, and that last bit sounds enough like Bradley Cooper’s Rocket voice to throw me off. Not enough to cancel out how much I liked that first bit with Bowser, but if it wasn’t for that I’d have probably written this off.

There’s definitely some kind of attempted east coast accent in play, but the jury’s still out re: overall quality. They should’ve just repurposed Bob Hoskins’ dialogue.

    • yellowfoot-av says:

Yeah, like it doesn’t sound any more or less right than if you put Jake Johnson or John Jakeson in the role. For all the PR about how Chris Pratt was toiling away trying to fine tune his Mario voice, it just sounds exactly like Chris Pratt in any other place. If you absolutely had to cast a celebrity in the role for star power(heh), you could have gotten somebody halfway interesting like Steve Carell or Owen Wilson.

    • jodyjm13-av says:

Celebrity voice typecasting at its finest. While Pratt doesn’t really match the tone of voice I would expect for Mario, much less the accent, he’s excellent at the “everyman muddling about as best he can while being in it way over his head” voiceover, so I’m sure he’ll be fine here.Anyway, the movie itself, based on this trailer, looks like it might well have the right blend of goofiness, action, and bizarre imagery, and the voicework so far all sounds good. My anticipation has inched up from “curious” to “cautiously optimistic”.

    • pete-worst-av says:

It does look really good, but honestly, I don’t give much of a shit about it because I am not 12..

  • dutchmasterr-av says:

It’s no Capt. Lou Albano, but cinematic brilliance like that is rarely duplicated.

  • richardalinnii-av says:

It doesn’t say whether or not Cpt. Lou Albano or Bob Hoskins have a cgi recreated voice cameo anywhere.

  • antsnmyeyes-av says:

The animation looks great, which surprises me for an Illumination movie.

  • pocrow-av says:

Well, they certainly went to a lot of effort.

  • mwfuller-av says:

    “Evil dies Tonight!”  Oh, wait.

  • yesidrivea240-av says:

Just as I expected, Chris Pratt sounds like… Chris Pratt. I still believe he was the wrong choice for the character but the movie looks fun.

  • paezdishpencer-av says:

Jack Black as Bowser was the right call.

  • iambrett-av says:

Pratt’s Mario voice is pretty meh, but that’s fine. The rest of it looks pretty awesome – and it was pretty cool to see Bowser and army take on the Penguin Kingdom guys.

  • thepowell2099-av says:

if only there was some well-known voice actor with an established track record of playing Nintendo characters

  • apostkinjapocalypticwasteland-av says:

Like…I can buy Ben Schwartz as Sonic. I can even buy Chris Pratt as Sonic, too. But I can’t buy either Schwartz or Pratt as Mario. Doesn’t fit. Doesn’t compute. I mean…if you’re going to cast 80s/90s video games with Parks & Rec alums, okay. But why would you not cast Nick Offerman as Mario? I could see Pratt as a decent Link. But Mario? No. I rest my case.

  • fistfullofbees-av says:

Wow. Knew Pratt was gonna suck, but look how bad the rest of the cast is (and I’m sure it’s been out for a while but this is my 1st time seeing it):“Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser.”Lord…why not hire the voice actors who have been doing the voices for years, and have been doing a great job, and get to pay them less! Why hire celebrities whose whole shtick is antithetical to the characters to do a bad job (Seth Rogen as DK? Is DK gonna be a stoner?), and yet pay them *more* for doing a worse job?

    • marshalgrover-av says:

Because more people know the names “Chris Pratt” and “Ana Taylor Joy” than “Billy West” or “Grey Griffin.” It’s all about marketing. The Rock is popular right now? Make him Krypto the Superdog, logic be damned.

  • thefilthywhore-av says:

“THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE… NO, NOT THAT ONE. THE NEW ONE, WITH CHRIS PRATT.”
Anyway, maybe this is just indicative of my crappy imagination, but it looks a lot better than I was expecting. I’ll watch it. I liked seeing Magikoopa, which gets my hopes up that we’ll see the Koopalings.

  • docprof-av says:

Way to give no effort at all, Christ Pratt.

  • disqusdrew-av says:

Chris Pratt as Mario doesn’t bother me much. It’s just as weird hearing Charlie Day as Luigi as it is Pratt. But who cares. The more important thing is this movie looks gorgeous and looks like it could be a lot of fun

  • erikveland-av says:

I’m just gonna say it…….this is fine

  • taco-emoji-av says:

Actually don’t really like Jack Black as Bowser… his voice doesn’t seem deep enough.

  • radarskiy-av says:

We already had a gritty reboot of Super Mario Brothers. It was called Brazil.
