Who are all these people in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy cast photo?

You know Superman and Lois, but who are Eve, Metamorpho, and The Engineer? And is that Skyler Gisondo?

Warner Bros. is launching production on Superman: Legacy, and to celebrate, director/co-head of DC Studios James Gunn recently shared a photo on Instagram of the cast having a good time and staring directly into the sun. Gunn captioned the photo with clockwise character names, specifically: Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, Guy, and The Engineer, plus him and co-DC Studios boss Peter Safran. That’s a lot of names, and seeing as how Gunn’s digging pretty deep into DC lore for this film—which will be the official launch of his new DC universe—we thought it would be helpful to break down who the heck these people are and who they’re playing.

One person you won’t see in this photo, though, is House Of The Dragon’s Milly Alcock. She was just cast as the new DC universe’s Supergirl, and while she will reportedly make an appearance in something soonish, she won’t make her proper debut until the Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow solo movie (coming at some point in the future).

In the order that Gunn named them, here’s who’s who in the Superman: Legacy cast photo.

Don’t tell anyone else on this list, but this might be the coolest one. The Engineer is Angie Spica from Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch’s Wildstorm comics, which is to say that she didn’t even originate in DC’s own books (but, thanks to years of mergers and takeovers, she’s now part of Superman’s universe). There are a few different versions of the character, but she’s generally a human who is bonded with high-tech nano machines of some sort that give her a telepathy-like control over machines. Neat! That’s María Gabriela de Faría from Animal Control playing her.

I trust they won’t be irritating but I really wish Gunn didn’t feel the need to include the goofy side characters from the Reeve movies. The DCAU was smart to switch out Eve for Mercy Graves, and Otis is just what you get when you can’t afford to show Superman flying all day long so you have Gene Hackman doing a two stooges routine whenever possible.  Just seeing that Otis is in this worries me that we’re getting yet another goofy yelling Lex with a real estate scam.

Why is it we can get a movie based on Madame Web of all people but a comic accurate Lex Luthor is still just a pipe dream?

      • raycearcher-av says:

Lex Luthor has yet to steal 40 cakes on film – and that’s terrible.

        • brianfowler713-av says:

Since November 2016 (if not sooner) it’s been A LOT easier to swallow a billionaire stealing cakes he could easily afford.

Oh just waitLook it’s pretty common knowledge that the predations of capitalism are making the general public less profitable of a market, and at the same time the mass production of luxury goods is allowing even fairly poor folks to enjoy the superficial trappings of wealth – you may not be able to afford diabetes care, but a lavish home theater is within reach of anyone willing to accrue some debt.As this situation worsens we’re going to see the investor class resort to more and more bizarre ways of demonstrating their social standing over the common man. You think techbros shooting up their kids’ blood and doing mushrooms at Bohemian Grove with Jeffrey Epstein is nuts? In ten or twenty years we’re going to see some real comic book shit. I’m talking full Hellfire Club stuff, just teenage billionaires in purge masks hunting the homeless for sport, space casinos, scuba diver gladiator deathmatches, Gorilla Brothels, you name it. After all, the real point of money is power, but there’s only so much power to go around; everyone else is going to have to settle for just standing out.

Yeah, ditto this… I’m still hopeful this’ll be good with Gunn at the helm, but man, Otis and Miss Tessmacher are not encouraging inclusions.A formidable, legit-scary Lex Luthor wouldn’t surround himself with incompetents.

Why can’t somebody try making a Superman movie that isn’t either grimdark or retro camp. There’s other options out there guys.

    • mcpatd-av says:

“…Otisberg?” “Miss Tessmacherrrrrr!!!!” 50 year old dorks like me never forget and Gunn knows this.

and nicolas hoult, god bless him, is more suited to ‘funny yelling’ than ‘yelling yelling’

    • xirathi-av says:

I think that’s pretty certain now. They’re overcorrecting from the Snyder-era and making another goofy ass Superman movie.

  • argiebargie-av says:

The man’s name is Nathan Fillion, and it’s about time James Gunn put him in a movie. He was in GOTG Vol 3

One person you won’t see in this photo, though, is House Of The Dragon’s Milly Alcock. Back in the day, I would’ve made an “It’s an omission…of alCOCK!” joke, but those AVC days are long gone.

Still haven’t gotten used to how much Rachel Brosnahan looks like Evan Rachel Wood.

  • rigbyriordan-av says:

Just kidding, we know his name was Serenity on FireflyNo it wasn’t. It was Mal!

  • dreadpirateroberts-ayw-av says:

Weird that we are getting a reboot, but we car keeping side characters made up for the Reeves era movies.

  • bc222-av says:

It’s sort of distracting how much the new Superman actually looks like a skinnier Henry Cavill.
They nailed that Jimmy Olsen casting, though.

  • kendull-av says:

    Jimmy Olsen casting is perfect!

Has there ever been a face better suited to opening a door, panic-shrieking at what’s on the other side, and slamming it shut?

Nathan Fillian as Superhero? Missed crossover opportunity.

Looks fine. Just use John Williams’ music for God’s sake. You’re not going to top it, it’s a waste of time to try.

    • tryinganewthingcuz-av says:

I wish they would do that. Or at least just use the old theme’s “fanfare” as part of the soundtrack. If James Bond can keep the same theme, why not Superman?

    • rgallitan-av says:

It’s timeless, and has become part of the character more than of a particular continuity. Much like how the Watts Spider-man movies stopped making cute little references to the old cartoon theme and just unironically incorporated it into the score.

I wish the Miss Teschmacher actress was playing Lois…she’s closer to comic book canon.

  • deb03449a1-av says:

Too much devotion to the 1978 film, instead of the comics.Super-genius wrestling fan Mr. TerrificThat was an Arrowverse thing, that’s not part of the character

  • ross357-av says:

Brownie points for the “One punch!” reference!

  • jasonstroh-av says:

Good to see this story isn’t overstuffed with characters with powers. *cough*
