Ted Lasso’s Jaime Tartt doesn’t know if he still has a job or not

Is Ted Lasso over? Should The Greyhounds find new homes? Does Phil Dunster need a job? Just call this situation Nancy Meyers because Something's Gotta Give

Like all great shows about a folksy mustachioed soccer coach out of water, Ted Lasso kicked its final ball last night. Or so we think. As many critics and viewers may have noticed, Ted Lasso didn’t exactly end. After changing time slots at the last second, Apple TV+ aired the Lasso season three finale last night in which Ted finally heads back across the pond to wow his fellow patriots with observations like “Just call me Beyoncé because this is a real Homecoming” or whatever. Coach Lasso should have remembered to leave a plan for his players, though.

With the uncertainty over the show’s future and potential spin-offs permeating throughout the nice-show-a-sphere, Ted Lasso’s Jaime Tartt (Phil Dunster) announced that he doesn’t know what’s happening with his job. On Instagram, Dunster shared candid photos of the production, the boys yucking it up on the field for presumably the last time. Unfortunately, the show didn’t say definitively, ending with Ted’s sleepy dream of Rebecca selling the team to the fans. Dunster doesn’t know either, as his caption indicates.

“Hey Siri,” Dunster said as he fulfilled Apple’s unspoken company mandate of employees pretending to use Siri. “Play ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ (but also maybe not yet we simple [sic] don’t know) by Andrea Botticelli.”

That “but also maybe not yet we simple don’t know” indicates that the cast of Ted Lasso doesn’t know if they still have jobs. That’s been the case for the last few months. In March, Jason Sudeikis told Deadline that it was flattering to hear that people wanted more—which is a little annoying because he surely knows how popular his hit series is. However, the actual Ted Lasso part of Ted Lasso sounds done.

“This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell,” he said. “The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being Season 3—it’s flattering. Maybe by May 31, once all 12 episodes of the season [have been released], they’re like, ‘Man, you know what, we get it, we’re fine. We don’t need anymore, we got it.’ But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far.”

However, ever the trickster, Sudekis also hinted at possible spin-offs down the road. “Yeah, I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks,” he said. “Again, I can’t help but take the question as flattery for what all of us that were working on the show has tried to do. It’s really kind of folks to even consider that because you never know what’s gonna happen when you make things. The fact that people want more, even if it’s a different avenue is lovely.”

So will Ted Lasso return? We don’t know, but it’s so nice of everyone to ask.

Well if the cast hasn’t been told they ARE coming back, they might want to start going on auditions

Hey, maybe you might want to read the news for a bit. There’s this Writer’s Strike going on that I bet at least figures partially into this…

Am I missing something everyone at the AV Club seems to have seen in the closing minutes? I really didn’t interpret that as a dream sequence but both here and in the recap, y’all seem confident it was.

It is framed in an ambiguous way, with the montage bookended by Ted boarding his flight and then waking up as it ends. I’d say there is support for either interpretation, and it also leaves everyone in a nice spot to either continue the story or be satisfied with the endings shown.

He certainly should have a job after his part in that dance routine.

I laugh whenever I see a “Will there be a Ted Lasso S4?”They’ve been saying for a couple years that it’s 3 and done, so the simple answer is no, there won’t.Every response i’ve seen, which is few because i find the question dumb, is some sort of never say nev er, but we had planned for 3 and we did 3.Maybe they’ll do a spin off, maybe not, but how long can they keep the same core characters, progressing with some sort of growth? Asking new characters to randomly come in and join the “the Lasso Way” for a few seasons is going to be a tough sell.

I’d be okay with Phil Dunster playing a Brian Braddock Captain Britain, in case Marvel looks at AV Club comments for casting ideas.

Honestly, I’d watch a show about any of these characters. I’d watch a show about Mae’s pub. I’d watch a show about Sam’s restaurant. I’d watch a show about Rebecca and Keeley starting a women’s soccer club while Rebecca adjusts to surrogate motherhood with the daughter of that pilot from Amsterdam. I’d watch a show about Dr. Fieldstone and about Trent Crimm trying to make the switch from print journalist to television commentator. Bring it on.

He can come hang at my house if he needs something to do.

The show is set up for a spin off (Greyhounds maybe?). I mean, the only character who is definitely written out is Lasso. All the other characters are still with the team.On the other hand, I think the last episode pretty neatly tied up all the loose ends. I’ve seen far, far worse series finales than this one.

I mean, I dug the show all the way through, but they seemed to be running kind of thin on material for a while there. And that wasn’t a Ted problem. It was more of a hitting-the-same-notes-to-diminishing-returns problem. I guess they could do something wildly different, I guess. As it stands, though, it feels like these characters have been pretty thoroughly explored. I’m just a little unclear on what everybody expects Lasso-Without-Lasso to be, exactly.

I don’t care if there is any spinoffs planned, I want more Hannah Waddingham. I will watch anything this woman is in. I hope this opens things up for her. She was simply wonderful. Just not another Septa Unella. She scared the crap out of me.

It seems like there’s spinoff potential for the Women’s Team at AFC Richmond that Keely floated to Rebecca in the last episode. I’m turned off of the show for good though. Too many batshit writing inconsistencies in the second and third seasons. It seems like many arcs (like Zava) were meant for a 3 episode arc, not an entire season.
