With Tetris arriving on Apple TV+ this week, we've got five other great real-life game-making stories ripe for adaptation

This week, Apple TV+ is releasing Tetris, the dramatic true story of the development, and importation, of one of the most successful video games of all time. Starring Taron Egerton, the film already made a splash at SXSW, selling audiences on its blend of ingenuity and Cold War thrills. It also, as it happens, opens a whole new avenue for the increasingly lucrative world of video game movies, i.e., ones not just based on the games themselves, but based on the dramatic stories that sometimes underpin their development.
Which got us thinking: What other true stories from the world of game are ripe for this sort of adaptation? We are, after all, talking about both a multi-billion-dollar industry and one of the most recently developed artistic mediums in human history: Surely there’s more to the dramatic possibilities of gaming’s behind-the-scenes world than a handful of falling blocks?
Hence these suggestions: 5 other real-life game creation stories that could get audiences hooked just as much—and, in a few cases, even more so—than the actual games they produced.

God, yes. The props department would need a huge budget though, if they want to be able to afford the mountain of cocaine that must have been a prerequisite to the decision to hire Daryl Gates for Police Quest 4.
There’s also that moment when Roberta Williams actually ended up posing alongside a couple of models-for-hire when a third model that they’d contracted didn’t show up for an adult game cover shoot. You probably wouldn’t notice it was the company owner if you didn’t already know. That might play pretty well on screen.
I’d love to see a limited series about what the hell went wrong with Duke Nukem Forever.
Perhaps Daikatana? The tagline is already there: “This Game’s About To Make John Romero Its Bitch”
I don’t know if it makes a good story, but I sometimes wish Daikatana was a better known cultural reference for what it embodied. Lots of hype and arrogance, endless delays and personal drama, and in the end something ugly, tasteless, and mediocre.Not coincidentally the same time that Rob Liefeld was writing and drawing comics.When the original Justice League trailer came out I wanted to joke that they had adapted Daikatana but no one got it.
It and the whole Ion Storm disaster is such a wild story.
