Halloween is imminent, and if you’re anything like us, you’re getting in the holiday spirit with some of your favorite seasonal staples—going back once more to those timeless classics of the scary-movie genre, like Michael Meyers returning to Haddonfield right on schedule. But while Halloween, like Halloween, never gets old, there are options for those looking to watch something new this October, something they don’t know line for line or kill for kill. On this week’s episode of Film Club, critics A.A. Dowd and Katie Rife run down their five favorite horror movies of the year, most of which will be available to watch from home by the 31st. And they overlap on only one film. Hint: It may or may not involve an invisible man.

I admit to recency bias, but I highly recommend it for Halloween.(It’s in cinemas, where available and apparently on Shutter.)

Haven’t seen His House yet, but if the other 3 films in that header are the best 2020 has to offer… Ooof. Invisible Man and She Dies Tomorrow are perfectly fine, but they’re not horror. Gretel and Hansel has some very good shots and a great witch, but still manages to be boring af. Really though, Invisible Man? ( One of ) The best of 2020? It’s a bigger budgeted Lifetime movie.

Invisible Man is horror, even if some of the premise sounds like a Lifetime movie. Watch Leigh Whannell’s previous film, “Upgrade”, and see how many of the techniques he uses are shared across the two films.I agree on Gretel and Hansel. So far the Blackcoat’s Daughter is the one film I’ve liked from Oz Perkins.

Maybe your expectations were wrong for G&H? It was a creepy drama with horror elements, IMO – not really a horror movie.I found it quite engaging once it became clear that the fairy tale story was out the window and The Witch mode was activated.

That’s so fucking stupid I kind of can’t believe you’re being serious

You may have missed this, but studios have delayed most of their good movies until next year. 2020 will be the worst year for movies since like 1932

Hmm, I’ve got to admit that, after a bit of introspection, most of my favourite “Horror” films of the year (so far) don’t actually fit all that neatly into that category. I’m thinking The Platform, After Midnight, Extra Ordinary, etcI am very much looking forward to His House and Possessor though. And I’m seeing Peninsula next week too, which should be a blast.

The Lodge?! Ugh. Katie is spot on. Such a poseur movie, with nothing to say. And fucking SENSELESS. The “twist” (if you can even call it that) being “improbable” is a stunning understatement. And that you are supposed to [SPOILERS PLEASE DON’T CONTINUE TO READ] I guess sympathize(?) with the kids after that moment? Like … what?!

Isn’t watching a horror movie in 2020 a bit like coals to Newcastle.

  • nothem-av says:

Ugggh, this reminds me how much I want to see Antlers, which was bumped to February next year. And also that I haven’t watched any new horror film this year.

  • John--W-av says:

Finally watched Invisible Man. Pretty good.

  • ghboyette-av says:

Can someone list the movies? I only got 8 of them and I’m trying to figure how to watch them!

We were robbed of the Candyman remake this year.
