If Paramount+ isn’t your go-to choice yet when you’re in a movie-watching mood, you might want to reconsider. Backed by the impressive catalog of one of Hollywood’s oldest studios, the streaming service is loaded with some of Hollywood’s most revered classics, along with some more recent titles that are worth a look.

But how to wade through the overwhelming options and find the best of the best? That’s what The A.V. Club is here for—to point you in the right direction with our expert opinions on cinema old and new. In addition to acknowledged classics like To Catch A Thief and The Godfather trilogy, Paramount+ also features contemporary blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick, the first six Mission: Impossible films (so you can prep yourself for next week’s arrival of Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One), and smaller films like the recent A24 critical darling You Hurt My Feelings. So read on for our top recommendations.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe | Official Trailer | Paramount +

One of the prime “rules” of screenwriting is that your main character has to change. Not just throughout the movie, but a little bit by the end of every scene, even. Yet part of the appeal of so many classic big-screen clowns is that they don’t change—or at least, if they do, they’re back to square one by the next movie. The Three Stooges will never resolve their differences peacefully. Hardy’s always going to blame Laurel. Costello cannot ever learn to be as brave as Abbott. And Beavis and Butt-Head, despite the occasional lifeline thrown to them by the misguided kindness of people like hippie teacher Mr. Van Driessen, will remain dumb, destructive, nacho-loving horndogs who seldom get closer to actual sexual intercourse than an accidental double entendre. All of which is to say that is pretty much what you expect—and it’s, uhhhhh, pretty cool. []

For any new streaming platform: what have you got that a) no one else does and b) hasn’t been around for ages that I’ve likely watched multiple times or own a copy of…and so far I haven’t seen a complete catalog of P+ films/shows, so I can’t say whether it would be a worthwhile addition for me. But after Prime, Netflix, Max, Hulu, Disney+ and all my Vudu rentals & purchases, man, it better have something amazing.

I got a 3-month sub to P+ on Prime Day for a song, and while it doesn’t host a ton of interesting content, it does have the new Beavis & Butthead movie, the new Beavis & Butthead reboot (which is fan-fucking-tastic; blows the last reboot out of the water), and Lower Decks, which are all worth getting it for a month and cancelling it.I only keep the ad-supported tier of Hulu full-time; everything else (P+, D+, HBO Max, etc…) get rotated in and out whenever there’s a full season of all the shows I like at the same time. That way I can kinda just binge everything and dump it for a year. I’ve always got fresh content to consume, and I’m not wasting money for 9 months of a streaming service that doesn’t have anything going on for it.P+ is really a pretty good deal; it’s something like $6 / month (I got mine for $2 / month for 3 months), so absolutely worth shelling out for a month of the ad-supported tier to get caught-up on their better programming, but not worth staying with long-term ala Hulu or HBO Max.

Anyone who watches Trainspotting and thinks it’s a glamourous lifestyle on-screen is more dead inside than a 100 year old corpse.  Get yourself into therapy, muppet.

I feel the same about describing Black Snake Moan as a sentimental story of a kindly older gentleman helping a troubled young woman.

Especially since the “chic suit” and “Sean Connery” comments are clearly about Sick Boy, the amoral, manipulative pimp whose baby dies of neglect. It reads exactly like someone saying Apocalypse Now made them want to join the military.

Holy shit,  I didn’t even know that a new Beavis and Butthead movie existed.

Hmmm, I’m big into cross-overs, so what if we tricked the Quiet Place aliens into watching the VCR (or DVD) of The Ring. Or even got the Fire-faced Demon from Insidious to watch it? What would Samara be able to do then?

  • evanwaters-av says:

The big issue with Paramount+ for me is that they insist on listing all the stuff that you can only actually watch if you also pay for Showtime, because they are hell bent on making that investment pay off, and it’s actually a substantial portion of their film offerings.
