Rest easy, political comedy fans, The Daily Show existed before Trevor Noah (led by Craig Kilborn and, more notably, John Stewart) and it will continue to exist without him. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the series will not only continue but remain on Comedy Central rather than switching to Paramount+.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the network told the outlet, “In time, we will turn to the next chapter of The Daily Show and all of our incredible correspondents will be at the top of that list. Until then, we are focused on celebrating Trevor and thanking him for his many contributions.”

One of those contributions, apparently, is shocking the hell out of Comedy Central by announcing his departure last Thursday, according to THR sources. Noah had reportedly extended his option to stick with the show for at least two if not three years. (He’d even supposedly had lunch with Paramount exec Chris McCarthy the day previous and made no mention of his impending announcement, sources say.) As such, the network is now scrambling to nail down his exit before making any decisions about a new host.

Now, take this next bit with a grain of salt, but Comedy Central sources have allegedly told TMZ that Roy Wood Jr. is a heavy favorite to replace Noah right now. Not only is he one of the most prominent correspondents, but the outlet claims his contract is coming up for renewal and network execs are eager to keep him with the network. Apparently, the higher-ups have communicated that they “want to meet with him to discuss his future… but he’s NOT been personally told he’s even a candidate to replace Trevor.”

So it’s still anyone’s game–and per TMZ, “there’s talk the next host could well be a woman.” (How radical!) Other Daily Show correspondents include Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, and Dulcé Sloan, and any one of them could be the next Daily Show host. Start placing your bets now!

Honestly, who’d want this job? We’re living in an era so stupid it’s beyond satire.

I feel it’s easy to be a writer for the Daily Show. You basically just transcribe everything that happens

If I didn’t have a face for radio, I’d take it. It would be a really nice pay bump for me!

Your daily reminder that the great Veep ended because the writers couldn’t figure out how to make Selina less likeable than the actual President.

    A WOMAN?!

I like Roy Wood Jr. But I’m not sure I like him as host per se.

Let the show die. It should have died with Stewart.

    • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

It did. They’ve just been propping it up for about 7 years.

Topical News didn’t stop because Kilborn left. It didn’t stop when Steward left. It won’t stop with Noah leaves either.

“I haven’t watched this show for the better part of a decade, but it definitely sucks and should be cancelled”

I have dipped back in occasionally and every time it’s bad. Not sure what you want me to do, watch 4 episodes a week for 7 years of a show I think is bad?

Whoever gets the job is going to have to be more of a woke choice than Trevor Noah or they’ll never hear the end of it. Hannah Gadsby? Laverne Cox? Lizzo? Lil Nas X?

  • artofwjd-av says:

I hope they give it to Roy. He’s funny and a really nice guy.

Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings can alternate hosting it.

Wood’s got by far the most recognition among that group, but does he do much more than go on and act exasperated by whatever he’s discussing that day?

    • adohatos-av says:

His “CP Time” character is hilarious. But with all of the correspondents he doesn’t get as much time as he deserves. His stand-up is really good too.

    (Typo: Jon Stewart, no H)

Surprised there’s no mention of Samantha Bee, her TBS show was great and cut short in its prime.

    • marshalgrover-av says:

Every correspondent getting their own show just became too much for me. Especially when nearly every show was getting into the political sphere with just how bad Trump was, they all blended together.

I usually watch the late night shows on YouTube buy I always found that with Full Frontal being weekly, by the time it came around Seth Myers or Colbert had already talked about the same stupid events and made similar jokes. At least with John Oliver his YouTube clips are typically his main topics which are stories that no one else is talking about

  • ddnt-av says:

I love Roy Wood Jr. but I don’t know if he has the right energy to be the TDS host. Desi “Store-Brand Samantha Bee” Lydic seems like a much more conventional choice to me. Besides, I’d rather CC give up on trying to make Charlemagne tha God a thing (seriously, how many failed shows is this guy going to get??*) and instead revive The Nightly Show with Wood as the host. He’d be fucking perfect for that, as he’s got the comedic teeth that Willmore often lacked. Also, nobody’s said anything to this effect, but this is host is most likely going to be temporary, right? Neither Stewart nor Noah were involved with the show before hosting, so it seems odd they’d hand it over permanently to a former cast member this time.*Fake edit: Apparently Tha God’s Honest Truth and Hell of a Week are actually the same show, just retitled and reformatted.

As backwards as it would be for a white man to take the role, I actually find Jordan Klepper to be the best choice followed by Ronnie Cheng. Otherwise, maybe they should go outside of the network.

  • isaacasihole-av says:

I like Roy but I don’t think he has the type of charisma needed to be the main host. None of the choices really excite me though so might be better to hire outside the bench.
