Even the fastest man alive has to stop running sometime. The Flash will end with its ninth season, according to a new Deadline report. The DCTV series, which stars Grant Gustin as the titular hero, will end its run (no pun intended) as the longest-standing Arrowverse show on the network.

“Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race,” executive producer and showrunner Eric Wallace said in a statement, per Deadline. “So many amazing people have given their talents, time, and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”

Deadline reported earlier this year that Gustin had signed a one-year contract renewal at a maximum of 15 episodes; the final season will be an abbreviated 13 episodes long. The show is being held until midseason and will premiere its last episodes in 2023.

With the cancellation of Legends Of Tomorrow, Naomi, and Batwoman this season, and with the end of The Flash in sight, The CW’s DC offerings have dwindled down to Superman & Lois and the upcoming Gotham Knights. And with the network’s future in flux, those shows shouldn’t get too comfortable either – much of The CW’s scripted programming has been gutted, and longtime favorites like Riverdale are on their way out.

Big Barry Allen fans will be able to follow up his small-screen sendoff with Warner Bros. long-awaited Flash film in June 2023, which is, um, a whole other can of worms. It’s tough out here for the Scarlet Speedster!

Grant Gustin is a pretty good Barry, though sometimes giving Wally vibes. Ezra Miller is not any Flash I’ve ever read (and I mean that in a bad way, he is awful).

Bugs the hell outta me. Barry Allen is such a good character and has always been one of those that seems to have been put into some sort of goofy ass comedy relief. Couple that with Ezra seemingly going batshit and they just fucked up a damn fun character.

I thought this was already known? Guess it was unofficial. But Jesse Martin is already not coming back as a regular. As this is the last Arrowverse show, hope they can do some kind of wrap-up, at least bringing the Legends back for an ep.

    • cajlo63-av says:

It would be great if they brought at least someone from Legends back for an episode. They could wrap up the cliffhanger without making it the focus of the episode.

    • mr-smith1466-av says:

It was long suspected, with even the showrunner vocally saying he assumed 9 would end it (8 was designed to be the end, until a last minute renewal and alterations to the finale). It hadn’t been formally confirmed 9 would be the end until now though.

Yea. Quite honestly, The Flash on its own doesn’t need a wrap-up at all. Last season already ended with Barry rescuing Iris while defeating Thawne for the millionth time. I mean I like Thawne but man was it tiring to see him be the big bad once again. The only real hanging thread is whatever is going on with Caitlin, Mark, and Frost but that isn’t even that interesting to me.Seems like they’re going to go with a traditional Flash season though given they hinted at Cobalt Blue. Which probably indicates Thawne is coming back again.

      • bc222-av says:

Maybe it’ll at least be Eddie Thawne… again? And the last couple seasons haven’t been season-long stories, more broken up into to or three arcs. So should be plenty of time to bring in Cobalt Blue, Max Mercury, Johnny Quick, and empty the speedster cupboard, and then an Arrowverse wrapup spectacular where they all face… multiple Thawnes? I was kind of kidding but have we ever seen Matt Lescher and Tom Cavanagh onscreen at the same time?

        • akabrownbear-av says:

There are only 13 episodes so doubt they have time for more than two arcs. If one of those is an Arrowverse wrap-up, would be fine by me.Not sure on if those guys have been in a scene together but frankly, I am good with zero Thawne. There is nothing interesting left to do with him. I get he is Flash’s archenemy but once you cover his role in Nora’s death and his intense hatred of Flash, what more is there about his character? It’s not interesting to have him repeatedly escape death and resume hating on Flash.

Kind of a shame they don’t keep it around for another two years and then just suddenly stop airing it without any sort of finale or explanation in April 2024

    • mr-smith1466-av says:

I don’t think 2024 even means anything in the show anymore. That date was moved forward to 2020, and was resolved with the crisis event.

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

Wait, this was still on TV? Maybe it’s just the pandemic speaking but it feels like I stopped watching this show 15 years ago.

Finally, our long national nightmare is over(I actually really liked the Flash but it’s been in a decline for a long while.)

this sums up my feelings exactly

    • hootiehoo2-av says:

This past season, the start of it and the end of it was great. Which was a big change since the past 4+ seasons have been just there.

      • weedlord420-av says:

IMO, the start and middle were good and the end sucks, but then again I hate everything about the other Forces (and Barry’s kids) so having them play a major factor was bound to make me mad. I do agree though that this past season showed improvement over more recent ones.

        • redwolfmo-av says:

the other forces- and them being Barry’s “kids” – was some of the worst writing I’ve ever encountered.  If it came straight from the comics, then those comics should be retconned immediately.

          • weedlord420-av says:

The forces are from the comics but they never did anything like claim they were Barry’s “kids” or anything. Agree though that it was some truly horrid writing there. It’s why I hate it, because they bring it up almost every time they appear.

At this point, the new bosses at Discovery have fired basically everyone EXCEPT Ezra Miller. Possibly because they’re afraid of what Miller will do to them.

Now make that Super Friends show, you cowards!

    • mattthecatania-av says:

The final season needs to deliver on that Gleek dangler!

      • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

        Exactly.
They had so much good material to combine, and we’ve ended up with a bunch of separate superhero shows again.
Feels like such a missed opportunity.

“The CW’s DC offerings have dwindled down to Superman & Lois and the upcoming Gotham Knights.”

    And Stargirl!

    • mrwaldojeffers-av says:

I was about to ask about that- now that Legends is gone, Stargirl is the most fun Arrowverse show (although, technically, it’s just Arrowverse-adjacent).Will we be getting a third season?

    • hootiehoo2-av says:

The Best show they have on that Network!

Why do people say “no pun intended” when the pun was clearly intended?

The most needed mercy killing this side of Ariel Sharon.

  • mattthecatania-av says:

If I had to choose betwixt the two, Legends Of Tomorrow deserves a final wrap-up season much more than The Flash!https://mattthecatania.wordpress.com/2022/06/30/does-the-flash-season-eight-run-on-empty/

  • cscurrie-av says:

Go further with other heroes. Get the Milestone heroes for an ongoing series. Blood Syndicate, for one. Shadow Cabinet. Icon & Rocket. Static has a movie project which can spin off the TV shows from it.

  • cleretic-av says:

Wild theory: The Flash held on for just long enough so that it could be the final show in the Arrowverse. To go along with the fact that, because it canonized the 90s Flash TV show, the Flash also being the first show in the Arrowverse.

  • themightymanotaur-av says:

They should make the final season an Arrowverse celebration season. Have all the characters come back from all shows and do a series of crossover episodes and build up to something huge to fight come the end of the season. It’d be the only way i’d come back to watch it after they cancelled Legends.

Maybe even have the CW Flash do something so “Dammit Barry!!” that it wipes the Ezra Miller Flash from existence.

  • redwolfmo-av says:

It was time and we all knew it.  I just hope they go out properly- bring in every hero you can get under contract for team-ups and a big battle at the end with the Justice League.

  • hootiehoo2-av says:

Hopefully, Flash ends right before the movie because they will do a reshoot in the movie and Grant takes over for the crazy person playing Barry in the movies. Or either because, Thawn from the TV show, now will kill Barry in the movies so we can get Wally West. One can only hope they figure a way to get rid of Ezra

Will AVClub be doing talkbacks/reviews for The Flash for its final season?
