The good news for Rolling Stones fans is these guys are never going to stop touring so long as they remain capable of taking the stage. That’s how we get Mick Jagger, 80, Keith Richards, 79, and Ronnie Wood, 76, embarking on “Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds,” a 16-date North American tour to promote their new album of the same name. Announced on Tuesday, the endeavor begins in April 2024 in Houston, Texas, and ends in California in July.

Hackney Diamonds was the group’s first original album since 2005, featuring collaborations with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Lady Gaga. Gaga helped kick off the album cycle at an intimate album release concert in New York, where they performed the new song “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven.” The lead single, “Angry,” earned the Stones a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song.

The Rolling Stones were last in North America on the 2021 “No Filter” tour, shortly after the death of drummer Charlie Watts. “Stones Tour ’24 Hackney Diamonds” is sponsored—no joke—by AARP, per Variety. Tickets go on sale December 1. You can check out the full list of tour dates below.

Now I need to decide which show I’m going to spend far too much money on. Every time I see these guys it’s under the assumption that it will be the last time, then they manage to tour again. It’d be easy to skip if they ever disappointed me, but that hasn’t happened yet. Whatever deal Mick made with whichever evil entity is still working, he is still a great live performer.

In 1975, when I was a high school senior working at a pizza place in Denver, my boss (an old guy named Roger, like 31 or so, but still cool) said he’d pay for my and my co-worker’s tickets for the Stones concert at CSU if we’d wait in line overnight at Peaches Records to get the tickets. So, of course we did.Roger said we couldn’t miss the concert because it was probably the last tour the Stones would ever do. He was only off by about 50 years! Great show -Chaka Khan & Rufus plus Charlie Daniels Band (before he was a redneck dick) opened. Elton John, introduced by Jagger as “Reggie from Watford”, sat in on piano for pretty much the entire set.

Stones fan to Stones fan:I dragged myself to the theater last weekend to see the documentary “The Stones and Brian Jones.” I recommend it to other Stones fans.
I really loved all of the old concert footage of the Stones. I hadn’t seen much of it before Not only does it look great, it sounds great. The stuff from like ‘62 and ‘63 was really good and good quality and I had never seen any of that before. Mick and Keith are in the film but their interviews are archival. Which is fine, it’s good stuff. Bill Wyman, though, is in it extensively and his stuff is all shot for the documentary. It’s very good stuff because not only does he have a good memory for the Brian Jones years, he and the documentarian (Nick
Broomfield — he’s got a zillion doc credits) spend quite a bit of time listening to old Stones songs and Wyman breaks down who’s playing what and what Jones contributed and so on.The story itself is pretty interesting, but ultimately kind of tragic – that’s not a spoiler. No reason for me to spell out the details, it’s just obvious that Brian Jones was both very talented and also kind of troubled and not a particularly nice guy. The stuff about how he started off the leaders of the band and over time Jagger becomes the leader of the band is pretty interesting. Definitely worth your time, especially when it ends up on streaming. One negative is that it’s a little long. Probably could have trimmed a little here and there.

June 7 in ATL! A Stones event is as much a party as a concert. Jagger is one of the greatest showmen of all time. Right up there with the late great Jimmy Buffett. I will be there.

Remember like 30 years ago when they were already the subject of constant jokes about being too old?

  • wgmleslie-av says:

I assume those are all handi-capable locations?

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

And they don’t look a day under 370 years old.

The joke 20+ years ago in Almost Famous was that Mick Jagger would be retired by 50.

  • newestfish-av says:

For an 80 year old, I’m guessing Mick is still in pretty good shape. Saw him maybe 15 years ago and he probably ran the equivalent of a marathon during the show. I wouldn’t be surprised if he still does.-d

Saw them two years ago and he’s still the same. It’s honestly quite something to behold. I’ve read that he runs like 8 miles a day when he’s prepping for a tour. You gotta admire his dedication.

Well I’m psyched. And I gotta say,  the part of the show I’ll be most excited for (as usual when I go to see any band I’m a fan of, and have seen multiple times before) is whatever they do off the fantastic new album. I’ll be yelling and “whooo!”-ing my heart out throughout “Angry.”
