Per The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Animation has revealed a film slate that includes the long-rumored Spice Girls film, which is currently in early development. As of now, all five members – Melanie “Scary” Brown, Emma “Baby” Bunton, Melanie “Sporty” Chisholm, Geri “Ginger” Halliwell, and Victoria “Posh” Beckham – are on board with the project. Yes, even Posh Spice, who perpetually “has a thing” whenever the rest of her former group mates even whisper about a reunion of any sort, has agreed to be a part of the project, so this must be serious. Simon Fuller, who managed the Spice Girls along with a ton of other high-profile artists, will produce and Karen McCullah and Kiwi Smith (10 Things I Hate About You) are writing the screenplay. The film will involve classic and new songs from the group’s massive discography.

Honestly, how have we managed to get this far without a Spice Girls cartoon? New Kids On The Block had an animated show during their heyday; the biggest girl group of the late ‘90s/early aughts should have received the same treatment long before now. Oh well, better fashionably late than never.

The remaining Paramount slate includes two releases a year starting in 2020, including the first 3D animated Spongebob film titled The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, which has been described as a love letter to late creator Steven Hillenburg, “the fans and the rest of Bikini Bottom.”

Aren’t they a little old to be going by names like “Baby” and “Spotty” and “Chocolate” or whatever? Even The Rock became Dwayne The Rock.

Dwayne Johnson shed his “The Rock” persona because every time he used the name he had to pay WWE. His movie career started with him going by The Rock, then Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and now everyone knows him as Dwayne Johnson.

Didn’t a certain “China Doll” have a similar issue? But I think she’s currently deceased, so I guess it’s not as big a thing.

Makes sense. Animation is the only way to make Beckham look lifelike.

Am I the only one who was always a bit uncomfortable with the fact that the only person of color in the group was called “scary”.  Maybe it was meant to be ironic or maybe that was her personality, but, as a casual observer, it gave me a bit on an ick factor.

Is it weird that I completely thought this had already happened? I would’ve sworn they’d had a cartoon, turns out it’s one of the few things they DON’T already have.I can totally see the sales pitch to Estranged Spice though – “We have a new idea for the Spice…”
    “HELL NO!”
“…and you won’t have to be on the same continent with any of them if you don’t want to.”
    “I’m in!”

They had a music video (midbreak up)that was stop motion/CGI animated, where they were some kinda disturbing demonic fairies who came out of a quarter machine and danced on a rubix cube and killed some androgynous ginger. Had nothing to do with the song, but you could’ve been thinking of that?

Sure. I’m happy with whatever keeps them from tipping over my garbage cans. A menace, the Spice Girls are! Melanie Chisholm gave my dog rabies!

Is the reference to “the group’s massive discography” a joke? They had three albums. Unless you’re including solo stuff – I’d be here for an animated Archer-esque spy romp set to Emma Bunton’s two Latin-influenced albums, which are great.

I swear if the film involves the Girls going to Pepperland I will go to the midnight showing dressed as Baby Spice.
