Okay, here’s the deal: It’s a cynical rom-com about a middle-aged man of below average-to-average height and appearance, played by David Spade. He goes on a date and meets the woman of his dreams, Missy, played by Molly Sims—who some viewers may be quick to confuse with Rebecca Romijn, which happens a lot—and decides to invite her on a vacation to Hawaii. But he mistakenly texts the invite to another woman he recently met who also happens to be named Missy, played by Lauren Lapkus. Unlike the Hot Missy, this Missy is The Wrong Missy (actual title), and shenanigans ensue. Oh, and Rob Schneider is there, presumably playing a problematic character of some kind.

Now, did we just describe a dream Adam Sandler had one night back in February, or a movie from 2001 that was dumped to Blockbuster and blessedly forgotten? NEITHER. This is, somehow, a new movie. And not only a new movie, but a film that posits a world in which David Spade—of all people—believes he is “too good” for a woman played by Lauren Lapkus. A movie in which we are to believe that Lapkus is a hideous nightmare person compared to the very nice, normal, and handsome DAVID SPADE. But don’t take our word for it. Here’s a trailer:

The only thing this trailer is missing is a fat joke and a Kevin James cameo. The reality is that Lauren Lapkus is truly too good for this shit, but go on and get that Netflix cash, girl.

Is there a law requiring Nick Swardson to be cast as the best friend in Sandler/Sandler-adjacent broad comedies?

  • debassist--av says:

Tbf, the trailer didn’t really call her ugly or “hideous.” It really played on the idea that she was more so crazy and loud than anything else. Doesn’t look good, but Lauren Lapkus is amazing, and if this can get her a bigger following, I’m down for that.

  • lattethunder-av says:

    Damn, Swardson got fat.

He’s a regular at the bar I hang out at, (Or used to hang out at, when you were allowed to hang out at bars.) Despite being at the bar a lot, he’s quit drinking for several months now and has lost weight. So he doesn’t look like this anymore.

  • recognitions-av says:

I mean, they could have easily based the “wrong” aspect around Spade being old enough to be Lupkus’ dad…

  • scarsdalesurprise-av says:

“It’s rude to make cheap jokes about a woman’s appearance. Also, David Spade is short and ugly.”

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

won’t someone please think about david spade’s feelings

      • martianlaw-av says:

It’s not about David Spade’s feelings. It’s about all short and ugly men’s feelings. We’re in this together.

      • scarsdalesurprise-av says:

Hardly the worst thing anyone could say, but it does sort of put the lie to this attitude of anti-shaming you hear about more and more. It’s so much “anti-shaming” as it is pro-shaming certain people and leaving others alone.

    • recognitions-av says:

It’s almost like it’s an incredibly common thing for older male leads to be paired off with ridiculously more attractive female love interests and yet you almost never see the reverse

“It’s rude to make cheap jokes about a woman’s appearance. Also, David Spade is short and ugly.”No, that’s exactly backwards. By all conventional standards, Lauren Lapkus is pretty. The movie tries to hide that by putting her in ugly clothes and having her laugh obnoxiously and bug her eyes out, but we’re still watching a movie where no one thinks she’s way, way, out of David Spade’s league, looks-wise. And that’s ridiculous.

You think this site–or any site anyone who reads this site also reads–would take this kind of offense at a film showing the opposite? It would be just as implausible (more so, really), but my point is no one would ever dare write that, because it would feel too mean. This? Have at it.

    • tedturneroverdrive2-av says:

I didn’t see a single joke about Lauren Lapkus’ appearance in the trailer. At no point do any of the characters even imply that she’s unattractive. They all think she’s insane.

  • brickstarter-av says:

I actually remember David Spades’ previous Netflix movie, World’s Best Dad or whatever, being sort of funny, but I guess it wasn’t that funny if I can’t remember the name.

  • captain-splendid-av says:

Seeing as how a shark gets punched in the face in this movie, by transitive properties, it’s better than the first Jaws movie. Checkmate, Spielberg!

  • houseofmagic-av says:

hot damn nick swardson tell us your secret for gaining 50 pounds *exclusively in your face*

  • apollomojave-av says:

Is Lauren Lapkus really too good for this shit? Doesn’t lead actress in a direct-to-netflix rom-com seem about right for her level of star-power?

  • cjob3-av says:

The trailer for David Spade’s new Netflix movie will make you believe it’s 2001 again. You mean because of 9-11?

  • kinjasucksbutyoudont-av says:

The reality is that Lauren Lapkus is truly too good for this shit Apparently not.

  • kreegz-85-av says:

The only thing I came away with from that trailer is Nick Swardson looks like shit.

  • bowie-walnuts-av says:

I mean, the guy has comedic chops in spades.

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

Genuinely baffling premise and trailer. Well, Lauren Lapkus deserves to hang out in Hawaii for a few months for free so maybe it was worth it. Just wish Hollywood would cast her in roles worthy of her comedic talents

  • gwbiy2006-av says:

Stuff like this makes me wish Roger Ebert were still alive.  I would love to read his review of this.

  • boogie346565-av says:

Why would they make this movie?“vacation to Hawaii” Ah, the Happy Madison vacation theory. Makes sense. I don’t see any corporate sponsorhip in the trailer but maybe with the Netflix they don’t need that anymore.

  • melancholicthug-av says:

And now I’m back wishing Farley was still around. AGAIN. Thanks, AVC.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Sure, we all know that in a film like this the male lead will eventually learn to appreciate the inner qualities of the less conventionally attractive woman he initially despised, but it sure was nice of the trailer to go and spell it all out so we weren’t left in any doubt.

  • youngwonton-av says:

Maybe this is just the result of being confined to my apartment for the past 5 weeks, but I actually laughed a lot during this trailer. I’m happy to see Lauren Lapkus get a starring role in a major comedy.

  • millstacular-av says:

Adam Sandler warned us that if he didn’t get an Oscar nomination he was going to make the worst movie ever.Is…. is this it?

  • russell0barth-av says:

    nope

  • tanookisuitriot-av says:

Let’s not forget the early-00’s habit of including a woman being painfully injured for laughs! Glad to see that old gem back in action here.

  • chandlerklangsmith-av says:

“A movie in which we are to believe that Lapkus is a hideous nightmare person compared to the very nice, normal, and handsome DAVID SPADE.” This movie looks terrible but this is also a very bad take. If you actually respect Lapkus as an actor, why are you basing your understanding of her character 100% on the way her body looks in a still photo? Look at her performance. She’s using line delivery, intonation, facial expressions, gestures, and physical comedy — all the tools at her disposal — to evoke a woman who’s grating, obnoxious, and therefore unattractive. This article is basically like a piece on a Jerry Lewis movie that says, “Jerry Lewis is a conventionally attractive guy! I can’t imagine why anyone would find him annoying.”
