Jason Segel’s been keeping a low profile over the past few years—after his excellent turn as David Foster Wallace in The End Of The Tour, he appeared in Netflix’s The Discovery and a few indies—but the actor and writer is returning in grand fashion with his new AMC show, Dispatches From Elsewhere.

We previously shared a teaser for the series, but AMC’s new trailer digs deeper into the central foursome—Segel, Sally Field, André Benjamin, and Eve Lindley—and how the immersive, citywide alternate reality game that serves as the show’s backdrop serves to soothe their loneliness. “This diverse foursome is brought together by chance—or perhaps it’s by design—when they stumble onto a puzzle hiding just behind the veil of everyday life,” reads a synopsis. “As they begin to accept the mysterious ‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’ challenges, they come to find that the mystery winds deeper than they imagined, and their eyes are opened to a world of possibility and magic.”

Richard E. Grant serves as the overseer of that possibility, and the question of the sinister nature of that magic looms large in the below clip, with Benjamin’s character puncturing the game’s communal joys of discovery with talk of a larger “conspiracy.”

Watch the trailer below.

The 10-episode series arrives on AMC on March 1 with a premiere directed by Segel himself.

Wow. Great cast and a super interesting trailer. I think I could really enjoy this. But, then, I see a bunch of weird points that could just be weird for weird’s sake and I start thinking about how much I disliked the OA just for that reason. I’m gonna check it out for sure, but I’ve already got doubts.

I have always felt that out of the the apatow crew of performers (or even just the Freaks and Geeks performers), Segel was the one with the most range. Here’s hoping this is great.

You mean you don’t appreciate the subtleties of Seth Rogen’s 10,000 versions of a comical weed smoking man-child?

      • capnjack2-av says:

I actually like Rogen as an actor. He doesn’t have a ton of range. But between Steve Jobs and 50/50 I credit him with being able to play dramatic when called on.

Freaks and Geeks has a great cast, but I think Segel played the best teenager. Nick Andopolis doesn’t really have a fictional “type” – he isn’t brainy or nerdy or a rich asshole or a troubled kid from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s just a pleasant middle-class fuckup – he smokes too much weed, he’s bad at the things he’s passionate about, he’s deeply insecure, his dad’s an overbearing shithead. The finale foists a bunch of “growth” on him, but basically Nick is the guy who peaks in high school without actually peaking. The character would be either irritating or depressing if Segel didn’t play him so well.

Maybe Segel should go see the psychiatrist. I hate the psychiatrist!

    Reject false nonchalance.

So wait, you mean those “Why Jason Segel isn’t getting picked for roles anymore” articles are all lies? And those reasons “why Emma Watson / Anna Kendrick won’t do nude scenes”, are they even real as well?

Sadly, no. But did you know these 5 things you’re doing in the kitchen that may cause cancer? Click here!

    • teageegeepea-av says:

The real reason for those last two is to prevent you specifically from seeing them. As soon as you kick the bucket, or lose your eyesight, it’s going to be exclusively nude performances, regardless of how unlikely it might seem at much later ages.

This looks fun and pretty despite “The Jejune Institute” being a little on the nose.

Shot in Philly!  Andre was hanging out in my favorite park playing the flute, which was kind of an odd thing to see on your walk home from work.

Well, that looks absolutely wonderful. Mark me down for one ‘clue from a Billy Bass’, please.

I like to pretend that every new Jason Segal role is just the next chapter in the life of the character he played in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” He’s still trying to find something that makes him as happy as Kristen Bell and a really big bowl of cereal.

  • hawkboy2018-av says:

After the horrible “How I Met Your Mother” finale, and whatever thought process led him to believe that a movie about the Muppets getting back together should be centered around himself and the most boring Muppet imaginable, I was fine with him disappearing for a while.

Did anybody else see the lede image and think they were making a gender-switched remake of The Silence of the Lambs with “Jamey Gumb”, aka “Buffalo Billie”, stalking “Clarence Starling”?

Looks like Dispatches From Elsewhere will make a great double-header with season 3 of Lodge 49! Oh wait, AMC stabbed it in the back like a cad.
It could’ve had them both! What’s the point of getting invested in this
when AMC couldn’t even bother promoting the quirky diverse esoteric
mystery show it already had? In conclusion, you should now watch the two critically acclaimed seasons on Hulu.

Hmm. Richard Grant overseeing a shadowy organization?
