There’s a lot to discuss about last night’s Golden Globes. There were two awkward Zoom muting situations, Ben Stiller ate Golden Globe-shaped banana bread onstage for whatever reason, and many celebrities used their time onstage to call out the HFPA for not having any Black members. But the one thing that nobody can stop talking about is the true star of the whole show: Jason Sudeikis’ sweatshirt.

For those who were spared from watching last night, Sudeikis tuned in wearing a tie-dyed hoodie and may or may not have taken an edible right before the ceremony. When he won Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical, or Comedy for Ted Lasso, Sudeikis appeared as if he had no idea what was going on. For a couple of minutes, he turned the Golden Globes into the most watchable awards show with his absolutely wild speech, looking confused as hell through the whole thing:

“That’s nuts. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press. I mean, this is, for me, the coolest thing that a group of… you know… like, that’s nuts. Especially—that’s crazy. Okay. Alright. Wow. Uh… well, here’s what I’ll say. I’ll say this: I want to thank everybody that works on this show. I read this book to my son, Otis, called The Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy. It has these three questions. “When’s the best time to do things?” “What’s the right thing to do?” And then “Who’s the most important one?” That last question, “Who’s the most important one?,” is whoever the person you’re with. So I kind of reject the premise of being the Best Actor because, in my humble opinion, the best actor is the person you’re acting with. So I want to give this shoutout to all the people I get to act with on this show, ’cause they’re incredible. Do they make me the best? No. But I know for a fact that they make me better. Better than I am, better than I thought I could be. Better than… you know.”

The other nominees were absolutely losing it (Ramy Youssef was particularly amused) and Don Cheadle even made a gesture for Sudeikis to wrap it up. But as painful as it was to watch that speech, clearly the “possibly high as hell at the Golden Globes, giving zero fucks” moment left a big impression on audiences. The hoodie became the most coveted fashion item from the Globes, selling out last night. And this is no regular hoodie—it actually costs $110. Sudeikis has been photographed in this sweatshirt before, and it’s actually merch from his sister Kristin’s dance studio, FORWARD__Space. Now we just need for Sudeikis to show up to every awards show wearing it.

is it weird I want to roleplay with Jason as Ted Lasso?

  • laylowmoe76-av says:

Reminder to myself in the event I become a celebrity: Everything you wear to a public event is likely to become a hot-selling item. Use this power wisely.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

Congrats to the people who can casually drop $110 on a hoodie that will be a conversation topic for maybe a day.  You’ve made it.

      • bishbah-av says:

How much *should* a hoodie cost? I spent $7 on a Hanes hoodie last year but it’s a) garbage and b) almost certainly made by foreign child laborers. It’s also plain gray and doesn’t look like one of my Hypercolor shirts from the ’80s. So what I’m saying is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        • freshfromrikers-av says:

You can get pretty decent Champion hoodies on Amazon for $20.

          • bishbah-av says:

Champion is also a Hanes brand, and the company has had issues in the past with subcontractors using child labor. Clothes typically don’t come that cheap without exploitation of someone, somewhere.Of course, for all I know, Sudekis’s sister’s hoodie could have been made in the same factory and just has a fashionable markup.

          • dirtside-av says:

Yeah. Most people really have no idea how much clothing would cost if the people making it were paid a fair wage.

        • jeninabq-av says:

Just b/c you’re asking: I got2 hoodies from Tee Public that were both, very surprisingly, structurally well-made and thickly lined with fleece . I assumed, since I was getting clothing with IP branding that they would be poorly constructed. Not the case. I got a black one with a print of the Bob’s Burgers characters in the Archer credits style, and one for my hubby with the Planet Express logo. We’ve worn these in 20 degree cold weather (with sweaters and not for long times) and they were very warm. The hood part that is around the face is double stitched so that when they’re tightened, they have great form. TL:DR. I paid $55 each for them with a shipping charge @$7. Very much worth it.

That’s the whole reason the red carpet stuff exists and gives celebrities free clothing. It’s all advertising, it’s been like this forever. This isn’t a just now conclusion or something.

      • Velops-av says:

If I recall, Joan Rivers was responsible for that. She was was the first to use the “Who are you wearing?” line. It drastically changed the arc of her life as people began to forget about her comedy roots.

And that’s how one of my uni lecturers ended up on Media Watch…

  • gargsy-av says:

“clearly the “possibly high as hell at the Golden Globes, giving zero fucks” moment”

Or, you know, he was simply surprised by the win?

  • bishbah-av says:

Someone’s been eating the Jack-glazed salmon again (sauce on the side)…

  • ducktopus-av says:

I know he just won an award and all, but this did have me kind of concerned. Hope this bro is alright. He should come do a drop-in spot on SNL to get back grounded (please more Maine Justice)

  • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

didn’t realize it was his sister’s merch that’s very cute. whole show was full of chaos energy but this was a nice moment.

  • laserface1242-av says:

Ted Lasso is a great show. It feels like a hug.

    • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

This show is on our list … sad we haven’t tuned in yet.

    • genejenkinson-av says:

I resisted it for so long despite the recommendation of others and dammit, it’s just so pleasant. Its charm won me over.

    • thesauveidiot-av says:

Well said, and one of my favorite shows I saw in 2020. I was legit shocked.

    • erikveland-av says:

How are we STILL not getting episodic reviews of the best show of this hell hole era AVC?

      • avclub-ae1846aa63a2c9a5b1d528b1a1d507f7--disqus-av says:

Because they barely review anything episodically anymore.

        • erikveland-av says:

It’s so bizarre. Isn’t this the cheapest way to get “engagement” on a site like this?

          • avclub-ae1846aa63a2c9a5b1d528b1a1d507f7--disqus-av says:

Not necessarily, if they don’t want to pay for freelancers or don’t have the staff resources to assign it. I mean, I think it would be a good investment, but these terrible venture capital companies are all about profit over product.

  • martyfunkhouser1-av says:

It was nice to see everyone bemoan the lack of diversity and still sit there, host, announce nominees and accept those awards with some level of honor.

  • odduck-av says:

    Mmmno.

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

Dude’s taking the breakup hard. Well, whatever, he deserves the award. Ted Lasso had a wonderful first season, and Sudeikis anchored it with his charisma and warmth.

  • brickhardmeat-av says:

lol remind me never to play poker with Eugene Levy unless I want to get bluffed into the sun

  • mdiller64-av says:

I read somewhere that he’s in the UK, filming season two of Ted Lasso, and so it was 2:00 a.m. for him. If anyone suddenly throws the spotlight to me at two in the morning, they’ll get a much less coherent response than this one.

    • peterjj4-av says:

Yeah, when I heard about this, I expected a much worse speech than the above.

      • cowsplainer-av says:

It’s almost as if some people get paid to be snarky.I liked this:>>That last question, “Who’s the most important one?,” is whoever the person you’re with. • rigbyriordan-av says:

Tatiana — it was after 2:00a.m. Prime Meridian time for Sudeikis (he’s over there filming S2). He was just tired and likely surviving on adrenaline. Not everyone is high.

  • sugarpeasdropem-av says:

That’s a rad hoodie for sure.

  • cctatum-av says:

I’ve heard nothing but good things about “Ted Lasso” . But I feel like I should now get AppleTV to support Jason through this whole Harry Styles thing.

  • jeninabq-av says:

Um…I haven’t seen Ted Lasso, but I’ve heard from The Watch that it’s good. Stukk, seriously, I’ve seen every other show that these actors were nominated from, and I cannot believe that he should have beat out any of  them. Good thing that these BS awards really don’t mean shit. I mean…90 people? Prom King/Queens have to garner more votes than that to win. Can we please be over the Golden Globes. For real.

  • thesauveidiot-av says:

Sudeikis has been photographed in this sweatshirt before, “He’s worn this before?! How dare he.” ~rich people, I’d imagine.

  • systemmastert-av says:

Sister Kristen got your hoodie on

  • joel-fleischman-av says:

He totally deserved that win. Ted Lasso was one of the gems that I stumbled upon last year. I didn’t know anything about the show going into it, other than a few quick teasers. I fully expected Ted Lasso to be some doofus screw-up and for this show to be a screwball comedy of errors, almost like an American Mr. Bean. But Jason plays Ted Lasso with a true earnestness that absolutely won me over. Even when everything in his world is falling apart and people are actively working against him, he faces it with a genuine hope and conviction, always trying to bring out the best in other people. And Jason doesn’t play the character for laughs. Just unrelenting positive energy.  And when there are those brief moments when he hits a low point, it’s all the more powerful.  I’m eagerly looking forward to season 2.
